Chapter 444 - Going Beyond

After Jason looked at Welles, the latter nodded and personally took Barry to search for the secret storage. When they returned, Jason was helping the others place all the bodies into bags after removing their weapons and identification.

"What took you so long?" Jason asked casually.

Welles, whose face was red with anger, pointed at Barry, who looked like a deflated balloon off to the side. "This man vomited no less than ten times, and he stopped walking once he had nothing left to throw up."

"At least you found the keys to open that inner storage, right?"

Welles pulled a key from his pocket and untied a large bunch of keys from his waist, then handed all of them to Jason.

"The one that's alone is for the storage. The others are for opening these doors."

"Great. That way we won't have to kick doors open like the strongest soldier in the group suggested…"

"It was just a suggestion, sir…" said a muscular soldier in embarrassment.

"Haha!"

The entrance to the corridor was a double door. From there, it could be seen that the corridor was quite wide, basically the same size as the one they had been in.

These corridors must have been built like this for the convenience of transporting large materials.

Walking down the hallway, a few meters ahead there was a corner, and then a thick metal door appeared in front of the group.

Jason, who was at the front, extended his hand and knocked on the door. Judging by the sound and the hollow interior, he quickly realized that the door was quite thick—the kind that couldn't be broken even with explosives, something similar to a bank vault.

At this point, the calmness in Auron's eyes had disappeared. Now he began to doubt Barry and to respect whatever was hidden in this place.

"Barry, help us open the door…" Handing him the key, and avoiding Welles' hand that wanted to take it, Jason finally gave it to Barry.

However, Barry looked at the floor, as if he were thinking about something deeply.

"Hey! What are you thinking about?"

A soldier immediately reached out and shoved Barry. He snapped out of it, and when he looked up, he met Auron's dark eyes. His expression became inexplicably tense, and a trace of cold sweat slid down his forehead.

Jason stared at him, as if he had guessed something, and said, "Are you sure this damn key can open the door?"

Barry opened his mouth, hesitating to speak, but Jason knew there was no need for him to say anything—his expression said it all.

All the soldiers looked at him with unpleasant expressions. Jason withdrew his hand and inserted the key into the lock. A mechanical sound followed, and instead of the door opening, a small window slid open.

What stood out was a combination lock and a fingerprint recognition system.

Turning his gaze back to Barry, the latter's expression was full of hesitation.

"I'll say it again—if you're afraid of exposing government secrets, then don't think too much about it. There is no government now, and the army disappeared a long time ago. I lead an organization that is slowly reclaiming the country's territory from the walkers."

"I have patience, but I'm running out of it right now, since an organization no weaker than mine is also trying to get here. So you should be grateful that it wasn't them who found you first, because I'm afraid they wouldn't treat you the same way I and my people do."

Jason paused, his cold eyes meeting Barry's, and warned, "But if you lie to me again, Barry, I swear I'll kill you instantly. You should know by now that nothing is better than being alive—but I only keep the useful ones by my side."

"I'm really sorry… I was just following the rules of that book I read more than twelve times, which said that not revealing everything means one more minute of life…"

He knew that if he didn't open the door, he would lose the trust these people had in him. He was truly worried about the consequences at that moment, but thinking about it now, he wasn't even sure if he could pass this level given his military rank.

Looking at Barry's troubled face, Jason felt like a bank robber. It was obvious this man was afraid of being held responsible for whatever he was about to do.

He knew that pressuring Barry wouldn't help. He was simply on guard against whatever might be inside that place.

Now that Barry stepped toward the door, he operated it carefully. Just as Jason had expected, there were no accidents, and the door opened quickly.

Crrrrr!

"Huh?!"

Right after the door opened, everyone's attention was drawn to the entrance. But when they saw what was inside, muffled exclamations echoed through the hallway.

It turned out that the door in front of them was not the only one—four consecutive doors opened together, and the innermost door was tightly sealed.

"What exactly are they storing here?"

The initial excitement faded a little after seeing this result.

"Uh… let me tell you the truth, it's actually not just a simple warehouse…"

Hearing this sentence, everyone's expressions became a bit strange, and Welles even twitched the corner of his mouth, wanting to use his prosthetic leg to kick Barry in the back.

Noticing this, Barry quickly said, "Below this place there is a very advanced missile system, and next to it there is a storage for equipment for a mechanized army."

"My God…"

Hearing this, Jason's eyes lit up with interest. In fact, abundant resources alone were enough to make him happy—but what he truly needed was a base with missiles.

He clearly understood what this meant. As long as he had people who mastered the relevant technologies under his command, along with a satellite still in operation, it could be said that he would instantly transform from a small force into a powerful one capable of crushing the CRM.

Tyler had wanted to secure a satellite for a long time, and now Jason believed it was time to fully utilize his old friend's abilities in this place.

They cheered with excitement, urging Barry to lead them quickly.

The last door leading underground was not equipped with an electronic lock, and they opened it easily.

Behind the door was a section of ascending stairs, leading to a small elevator room.

Barry took the initiative to open the elevator, then pulled out a card from his body and swiped it over the sensor area. The red indicator light turned green, and a metal plate slid away from the button panel, revealing the buttons underneath.

Jason knew very well that they should be on the fifth underground level, but the elevator only showed buttons up to the third level.

But that wasn't important. What mattered to him now was what would happen after they went down.

"Is there anyone there?"

Barry nodded slightly, but quickly shook his head again. "Since the virus outbreak happened at night, there were only a few dozen people on duty here, so there shouldn't be any threat to you and your people in this place."

Just as he finished speaking, he thought of something else and added, "By the way, everyone, please don't shoot when we get there. We'll be surrounded by special instruments for a while, and if they break, it could cause a series of serious problems. So I ask that you do not use your firearms."

"We all understand!"

A few seconds later, the elevator chimed, and they arrived at the first level of the missile base.

As soon as the elevator doors opened, a brightly lit corridor appeared before them. Both sides were covered with white walls, reflecting the overhead lights into every corner, making the hallway extremely bright.

After walking a few meters, everyone saw circular corridors on both sides, which seemed to be built around a spherical space.

And right in front of them was a door. This time it was no longer a metal door, but a glass one. Through the glass, they could see a massive interior space. Rows of computer equipment were displayed, along with several huge screens.

A few walkers wandered aimlessly at the front.

"This is a damn mess. Take care of them with melee weapons."
