Chapter 5 - A Battle without rules

Takeru stood over the fallen puppet, his breath coming in sharp, ragged gasps.

His fingers still twitched from the raw energy that coursed through his veins.

"…I think I just broke the rules," he muttered, half to himself.

Akari narrowed her eyes, stepping closer. "What the hell was that?"

Takeru didn't answer right away. His mind was racing, trying to make sense of what had just happened. He had felt it, a shift, a fundamental rewrite of reality.

He had removed the puppet's speed limit.

Before he could respond, the ground trembled.

A guttural, echoing howl filled the air, sending a fresh wave of dread washing over them.

Akari snapped her head toward the source. "We don't have time for this. Something big is coming."

Takeru forced himself to refocus. "Right. Let's move."

The two heroes sprinted through the ruins, weaving past the unconscious puppets they had left in their wake.

The distant battle cries of other heroes filled the air as they fought to contain the spreading chaos.

Then, a voice crackled in their earpieces.

"All units, report immediately! The S-Rank heroes have engaged a new anomaly. This is turning into an extinction-level threat!"

Akari cursed. "Great. As if things weren't bad enough."

They rounded a corner, and froze.

Ahead of them, S-Ranked Heroes Tyuji and Gugada stood side by side, staring down a monstrosity.

The thing loomed over them, a grotesque fusion of writhing limbs, pulsating flesh, and shifting, amorphous mass. Its tendrils lashed out at random, warping the space around them.

It wasn't just a puppet anymore. This was something else. Something worse.

Tyuji exhaled a cloud of icy mist, his eyes narrowed. "This thing… it's not just another puppet. Someone is evolving them."

Gugada adjusted his gloves, his expression unreadable. "And they're doing it deliberately."

The massive creature let out another inhuman screech, the very air around it distorting.

Then, it moved.

Faster than a monster of its size had any right to.

A blur of tendrils lashed toward Tyuji and Gugada.

Tyuji smirked, raising his hand. "Tch. Annoying."

A tidal wave of ice erupted from his palm, freezing the tendrils mid-air. He clenched his fist, and the ice shattered, breaking them into fragments.

The monster barely reacted.

Instead, the shattered tendrils regenerated, faster than before.

Gugada's eyes darkened. "…We can't defeat it like this."

Tyuji clicked his tongue. "Then we freeze its damn core-"

But before he could act, the creature suddenly spasmed.

Then, it spoke.

A voice, hollow and fragmented, echoed from deep within its twisted form.

"…You think you can win? You think you can break my army?"

Takeru felt a chill run down his spine. This wasn't just a mindless monster.

Someone,something, was controlling it.

Akari clenched her fists, golden energy crackling around her.

Gugada remained eerily calm. "Akari." His voice was steady. "Whoever this is… they're testing us."

Tyuji scoffed. "Then let's pass the damn test."

With that, he vanished in a burst of freezing mist, reappearing inches from the monster's core.

He raised his hand, ice coalescing into a jagged spear.

Then, he drove it forward only for the spear to do absolutely nothing.

Tyuji's eyes widened slightly. "What the-"

The monster lashed out, slamming him backward with a force that shattered the street beneath him.

For the first time, Tyuji grimaced.

Takeru's heart pounded.

Akari gritted her teeth. "Takeru. Now would be a good time to break some rules of your own."

Takeru clenched his fists, heart hammering as the monster's twisted form loomed over them. The street beneath it cracked, its grotesque mass pulsating like a living nightmare.

Tyuji stood up with a grunt. "That thing just tanked an S-Rank attack like it was nothing." His breath curled into mist, the temperature around him plummeting. "This is getting annoying."

Akari's golden energy flared. "No choice then. We take it down, fast."

Gugada remained eerily calm, his cane tapping against the pavement. "Careful. Something is warping its body. If we don't find the source, it will just keep regenerating."

Takeru's mind raced. The way the monster moved? the way it absorbed attacks, something wasn't right.

And then, he saw it.

Small, almost imperceptible, but definitely there.

Threads.

Thin, barely visible strings coiling through the monster's body, shifting, rearranging. Every time it took damage, the threads pulsed, and its wounds instantly closed.

"Shit," Takeru muttered. "It's being controlled remotely."

Akari's eyes flicked toward him. "What?"

Takeru exhaled sharply. "Something is pulling its strings, literally." He pointed at the near-invisible threads coiling around its limbs, its torso, its head. "That's why it's so damn strong. Someone's reinforcing it from a distance."

Gugada's gaze darkened. "That means there's a puppeteer. And they're nearby."

Tyuji cracked his knuckles, his breath coming out in a cold mist. "let's flush 'em out."

The monstrous puppet screeched, its tendrils whipping toward them.

[Rewrite Combat Rules – Remove Durability Limit]

Reality shifted.

Takeru moved.

In a blink, he was above the creature, his fist already swinging downward. "Forgive me for this!"

The moment he struck, the monster's entire arm shattered like brittle glass. The threads connected to it snapped, flickering wildly.

Takeru landed smoothly, exhaling. "So that's the trick."

The moment he rewrote the creature's durability, it had crumbled under a single strike.

The monster spasmed, its movements erratic. The threads twisted violently, as if whoever was controlling it was trying to compensate.

Akari grinned. "So that's how we're playing this?"

She vanished in a blur of gold, her flaming fist colliding with the creature's chest.

Without its reinforced durability, the impact sent the monster hurtling through the air, crashing through a nearby building.

Tyuji let out a low whistle. "Alright. That was impressive."

Gugada's fingers twitched. "I felt it. The puppeteer's control wavered for a moment."

Takeru's pulse pounded. They had an opening.

The monster screeched, trying to rise again, its threads struggling to repair its broken body.

But this time, Takeru saw it.

A single thread.

Thicker than the others. Leading away from the monster.

Straight toward the ruins of a collapsed skyscraper in the distance.

Takeru's eyes sharpened. "There."

Akari followed his gaze. "You see them?"

"Not yet. But I see their control line."

Tyuji smirked. "Then what the hell are we waiting for?"

The four heroes moved as one.

And deep within the ruined skyscraper, a lone figure watched them through the haze of neon and destruction.

The puppeteer's fingers curled around the glowing strings connected to the monstrous pup.

They clicked their tongue, amused.

"Interesting…"

Their grip tightened.

"Let's see how long you can keep breaking the rules, Boy."

The skyscraper loomed ahead, its skeletal remains barely holding together after years of decay. Neon lights flickered weakly through shattered windows, casting eerie glows across the broken cityscape.

Takeru's breath was steady, but his pulse raced. The thick thread leading from the puppet's remains pulsed like a living vein, guiding them straight toward its master.

Akari kept pace beside him, golden energy crackling around her. "Whoever's in there… they're dangerous."

Tyuji scoffed, rolling his shoulders. "Ain't the first time I've crushed some sick bastard hiding in the dark."

Gugada, however, remained silent. His fingers tapped rhythmically against his cane, his normally composed demeanor stiff with unease.

Takeru noticed. "Something wrong?"

Gugada's eyes stayed locked on the building. "The threads… they aren't just controlling."

Akari frowned. "What do you mean?"

He exhaled, his voice measured. "They're feeding something."

A chill ran through Takeru's spine.

Before he could respond, the ground beneath them rumbled.

The skyscraper breathed.

Then, it moved.

A wave of darkness erupted from within, flooding out like ink spilling across the ruins.

And then, he appeared.

The Puppet Master.

A tall figure, clad in a long black coat, his face hidden behind an abyssal void. No features. No expression. Only two piercing crimson eyes burning from the darkness of his mask.

He stood amidst the writhing shadows, the thick threads extending from his fingers like arteries, pulsing with unnatural energy.

Takeru's stomach twisted.

This wasn't just another enemy.

This was the one pulling every string.

The Puppet Master tilted his head slightly, those glowing red eyes locking onto them.

"You shouldn't be here," his voice echoed, calm, smooth, yet layered with something inhuman.

Takeru clenched his fists. "Too bad."

A pause. Then, the Puppet Master chuckled, a low, amused sound that sent a shiver through the air. "Very well."

The threads moved.

And the entire building came alive.

From the ruins, dozens of figures emerged, twisted humanoid forms, bodies reshaped into grotesque shapes by the Puppet Master's control.

Some crawled on all fours, their limbs elongated like spiders. Others loomed tall, their bodies shifting unnaturally as they lurched forward.

All of them had one thing in common, piercing crimson eyes.

Tyuji clicked his tongue. "You've gotta be kidding me."
