Chapter 401 - Chapter 401: Pidgeot’s Collecting Habit

Early the next morning.

Breathing in the fresh air near Ice Pond, Silas felt exceptionally refreshed.

He had to admit that the health examination equipment and recovery systems here were truly world-class. The Joy family had clearly invested a tremendous amount of effort into them.

According to Nurse Joy, the pond's water composition changes depending on mineral balance, producing different recovery effects for different Pokémon types.

Of course, Ground-, Rock-, and Fire-type Pokémon couldn't fully benefit from this effect.

It wasn't that they couldn't soak in the water—Pokémon naturally have strong endurance, but there was no reason to force those three types to endure discomfort for hydrotherapy when alternative, slightly less effective treatment methods existed.

After all, Blaziken already acted like it was facing death every time it had to take a bath. Letting it soak overnight would be outright torture.

After a full night of recovery, the little ones all reported feeling especially energetic today.

Probably energetic enough to lift Silas and swing him around.

After a simple morning workout, Silas bid farewell to Nurse Joy and headed toward Ecruteak City.

Since Ice Pond and Ecruteak City were located on opposite sides of the Valley of Wind, the journey wasn't exactly short.

It wasn't until noon that Silas had completed less than half the distance. After finishing lunch by a forest river, he prepared to continue his journey.

"Piii—"

A familiar cry echoed from above. It was Pidgeot.

"Nice of you to remember to come back," Silas muttered, rolling his eyes as he paused to take out a bag of Pidgeot's specialized Pokéblocks.

Pidgeot had been so excited about breaking through to the Elite tier that it insisted on flying around alone that morning just to enjoy itself.

Silas hadn't thought much of it at the time and readily agreed.

He had assumed it would return within an hour or two. Instead, nearly four hours had passed before Pidgeot finally came back, likely starving.

After smoothing down its messy feathers, Silas watched it gulp down two or three Pokéblocks at a time and wondered how it had managed to look so disheveled.

Elite-level wild Pokémon weren't exactly common, and Pidgeot flew incredibly fast.

"Piii!"

While eating, Pidgeot proudly showed off its "trophy", a gray stone.

Silas casually took it and examined it. It didn't seem special.

This was one of Pidgeot's strange hobbies. Whenever it went wandering, it always brought something back. But the only time it had ever found something truly valuable was that Shiny Rattata.

According to Professor Rowan, the Shiny Rattata had been living an extremely comfortable life over the past year, it had grown so fat that it barely resembled a Rattata anymore. Rowan's team was even planning to train it a bit so it wouldn't become completely incapable of battling.

Mainly because the female Rattata had started rejecting it, they thought it was too weak. As for this time, Silas didn't believe this stone, somewhere between dirt and coal in appearance was anything priceless.

After all, he had memorized every known Pokémon item to date.

Zero's analysis confirmed his conclusion.

At most, this stone had once been used as coal fuel long ago, but compared to Fire-type Pokémon, it was neither environmentally friendly nor convenient, so it had long since been phased out.

Even so, Silas placed it in a small compartment in his backpack, the designated storage area for Pidgeot's collected "treasures."

Including, but not limited to, strange branches and rocks.

"Piii!"

Seeing this, Pidgeot flapped its wings in dissatisfaction.

It had worked hard to snatch this from a big guy. It had to be valuable, surely not useless like the previous finds!

Silas didn't believe it for a second.

"You say that every time."

But he was curious about something else.

"What Pokémon did you snatch it from? It even managed to make you look like this?"

"Pidgeot."

Pidgeot shook its head dismissively. It had fallen on its own, nothing to do with the unknown Pokémon.

Silas nearly burst out laughing.

Pidgeot, offended, smacked him flat onto the ground with one wing.

Silas stood up calmly, brushing off the dirt.

"Alright, tell me about it."

"Piii—Piii!"

As Pidgeot described the Pokémon, an image slowly formed in Silas's mind.

First: it walked on four legs and was very fat.

Second: it had a yellow circle on its head.

Third: its body was brown and covered in many rectangular patches of fur.

After imagining it, Silas found it difficult to match the description to any known Pokémon species.

His mental database had no record of such a Pokémon.

Perhaps Pidgeot's description was inaccurate but regardless, Silas suddenly became interested.

As a Pokémon Trainer, encountering an unknown Pokémon meant one thing: investigate it thoroughly.

"Where is it? Take me there," he said with growing excitement.

Pidgeot swallowed its last Pokéblock and pointed north with its wing.

Silas considered that Morty had already been waiting for him for quite some time. A little longer probably wouldn't matter.

If all went well, he could still reach Ecruteak City by tonight.

At worst, Pidgeot could carry him.

He clapped his hands happily.

"Then it's decided. Let's go, Pidgeot. We'll get your pride back."

"Pidgeot!"

Pidgeot insisted it hadn't lost any pride.

"Yes, yes. We're just going to see what it looks like," Silas quickly amended.

Satisfied, Pidgeot crouched down.

Silas lightly jumped onto its back.

"Let's go!"

He waved dramatically.

"Whoosh—"

A gust of wind surged.

A dark streak shot up from the dense forest.

In the blink of an eye, Pidgeot carried Silas high into the sky.

In another equally dense forest, a strange bear-like Pokémon sat quietly in its den.

Neatly arranged in front of it were four gray stones, identical to the one Pidgeot had brought back.

"Yame~"

A small figure ran to its side and skillfully climbed up its fur onto its back.

"Wuooh…"

The large bear Pokémon snapped out of its daze and let out a gentle, affectionate cry.

The size difference between the two Pokémon was enormous, like a toy beside a tank. As midday sunlight filtered into the cave, the smaller figure became visible.

A light brown body, a crescent-shaped white mark on its forehead, and a small round brown tail. It was Teddiursa, the same species Silas had encountered before in Ursaring Forest.

The large bear's appearance also became clearer, exactly as Pidgeot had described.

Not only that, its thick eyebrows and soft eyes gave it a gentle expression that sharply contrasted with its massive size.

However it did not match any Pokémon currently listed in the known Pokédex.

Just as Teddiursa was playing around the unknown bear Pokémon.

"Pidgeot~"

"Wuooh!"

The previously calm unknown bear Pokémon immediately roared in fury upon hearing that cry.

It shook its massive body, tossing Teddiursa off its back, then scooped it up and carried it to the corner of the cave.

It nudged Teddiursa with its head, signaling it not to move, before stomping toward the cave entrance with heavy, anger-filled steps.

That scruffy bird had stolen something and dared to come back? It would make it pay.

Teddiursa sat on the ground licking its paw. After tilting its head in confusion, it stood up and toddled after the larger Pokémon.

In this forest, it had never encountered a Pokémon stronger than its mother.

High in the air, Silas crouched slightly on Pidgeot's back, narrowing his eyes as he surveyed the ground below.

The trees around the cave were covered in claw marks, chaotic and destructive.

"Well, that's quite a size," Silas raised an eyebrow.

Judging from the environment alone, the Pokémon inside was even larger than Gigalith and possessed immense destructive power.

His ears twitched as he heard roaring from inside the cave, followed by heavy footsteps.

He patted Pidgeot, signaling it to lower him down, then steadied himself on a thick tree branch.

"Wuooh~!"

Accompanied by an enraged roar, a towering behemoth over two meters tall emerged into Silas's view.

His pupils shrank instantly. He immediately took out his Pokédex, snapped a photo, and transmitted it to Professor Oak's laboratory.

"Pidgeot, use Gust!"

Pidgeot had just been about to taunt its opponent from above when Silas's command rang out.

Fine. It would talk after winning.

With a powerful flap of its wings, Pidgeot whipped up violent winds.

"Wuh—RAH!"

The unknown bear Pokémon roared. A series of stones formed in midair and shot outward at high speed.

The wind and stones collided, scattering in all directions.

Silas narrowed his eyes.

"Rock Slide? No, Stone Edge. So this thing is either Rock-type or Ground-type?"

Since he had never seen this Pokémon before, Zero could not even provide a name—only question marks.

However, one thing was certain: it was not at the Elite level. It lacked that indescribable pressure such Pokémon exuded.

Pidgeot maneuvered skillfully in the air, dodging residual stone fragments, all while letting out mocking cries.

If it hadn't foolishly flown into the cave earlier to check what treasures the Pokémon had collected, a Elite-level aerial predator like itself wouldn't have been scratched by a Pesudo-Elite ground-dweller.

Still those claws hurt, Pidgeot thought.

"Stop daydreaming, Double Team, then Steel Wing!"

Sensing Pidgeot's wandering thoughts through their bond, Silas snapped it back to focus.

"Pidgeot!"

With a flap of its wings, dozens of Pidgeot clones filled the sky, blotting out the sunlight.

Immediately after, every Pidgeot's wings gleamed with metallic silver light.

"Shiiing—!"

In the next instant, chaotic flashes of silver-white light rained down from above.

Seeing this, the unknown bear Pokémon could only defend. It lowered its head and shielded it beneath its massive body.

"Bang!"

Hidden among the clones, the real Pidgeot struck repeatedly with Steel Wing, but the damage was limited.

"Impressive defense and stamina," Silas muttered in admiration.

This unknown Pokémon's strength was comparable to some starter Pokémon lines, at least by his judgment.

But every Pokémon had strengths and weaknesses.

If its physical defense and endurance were excellent, then its special defense was likely weaker.

"Pidgeot, gain altitude and use Hurricane!"

"Pidgeot~!"

The remaining Pidgeot clones circled rapidly from multiple directions, generating a violent storm.

Trees throughout the forest bent under the wind's force.

"Wuooh—!"

Before long, pained roars echoed from within the storm.

Silas smiled slightly. His assessment had been correct.

As the winds subsided, he threw Blaziken's Luxury Ball.

"Blaziken, use Aura to check its condition."

Blaziken nodded, blue light shining in its eyes.

"Boom!"

A pillar of fire erupted from its wrists.

"It still has some stamina left. That should finish it," Blaziken said calmly through Aura sensing.

"Pidgeot!"

Pidgeot descended unhappily and smacked Blaziken lightly on the head with its wing.

Why were you stealing my prey?

Blaziken replied that Pidgeot's attacking power was too weak.

The two immediately began playfully swiping at each other, though unfortunately, a nearby tree trunk suffered the consequences.

Meanwhile, Silas had already approached the fallen giant bear Pokémon.

"Teddi!"

A young, angry cry rang out, followed by a claw slash leaving a white streak in the air.

But before it could reach within half a meter of Silas, both the attacker and its claw strike were frozen midair by blue-purple psychic energy.

Kirlia Teleported instantly in front of the suddenly appearing Teddiursa, its eyes glowing brightly.

"Bang!"

Teddiursa was launched backward like a rocket.

Silas wasn't startled at all. He trusted his partners' protection completely.

Instead, he was curious.

Could this unknown Pokémon be related to the Teddiursa–Ursaring evolutionary line?

As he pondered, his wrist device, still ringing finally connected.

"Hello? Professor Oak, I—"

"WHAT IS THAT POKÉMON?! WHERE ARE YOU?! HAVE YOU CAUGHT IT YET?!"

The booming voice made Silas instinctively move his arm farther away.

For the first time, he regretted owning a high-end Silph Co. communicator capable of making calls even in remote areas with decent signal.

A lower-grade model would only function in cities.

"I'm in the latter half of the Valley of Wind, hard to describe precisely. I don't know what species it is, but there's a Teddiursa with it.

And no, I haven't caught it yet, but I did knock it unconscious."

Silas answered methodically.

Clearly, the elderly professor had once again entered a frenzy over a newly discovered Pokémon.

The last time had been when Silas discovered Leafeon and Glaceon, but that had been different.

Eevee's evolutionary potential had long been theorized. This Pokémon, however, appeared without any precedent.

"Teddiursa, you say?

Based on the body patterns and features, it could be a previously undiscovered evolution of the Teddiursa line. But no such evolution has ever been recorded. What does it specialize in? Physical offense? Those five claws look extremely sharp.

From the image you uploaded, its thick fur suggests solid defensive capability, though whether that's physical or special remains to be tested.

Height approximately 2.4 meters. Weight unknown, but likely around 280 kilograms. That's a massive specimen.

Ability possibilities: Guts, Bulletproof, Fur Coat, Tough Claws, or Fluffy.

If it is an evolved form of Ursaring, then judging by appearance, it's unlikely to remain a pure Normal-type, but we'll need proper testing."

Professor Oak muttered rapidly.

Silas felt his scalp tingle.

He had only uploaded a blurry image before the battle and the professor deduced all that? No wonder he was regarded as the leading authority in Pokémon research.

Professor Oak quickly steadied his excitement.

"Silas, catch it first. I'll file a preliminary report with the League.

Then inspect the cave interior, video recordings and photos would be best. If you find any unusual objects or items, preserve them."

He knew Silas didn't like catching Pokémon casually, so he emphasized it carefully.

Silas tilted his head in thought.

"That's fine. I can add this one to my reserve team. But I'll need you to arrange a trade for the Teddiursa."

Judging from the battle, this unknown Pokémon was even stronger than that Rhydon he had previously encountered at the same tier.

It was more than qualified for his second team.

Though Blaziken's involvement meant he'd need a proper capture battle afterward, that wasn't an issue. Once its full data was known, there would be many ways to defeat it cleanly.

Besides, by then Blaziken would probably have reached the Elite tier. If necessary, one kick would suffice.

Professor Oak agreed. The League would undoubtedly argue over ownership once the discovery became public.

"I'll prepare and head out. If I recall, you're heading to Ecruteak City? I'll be at the Pokémon Center there tonight."

"Mm."

Silas nodded.

The call ended swiftly.

He shrugged, accustomed to it.

"Kirlia, stop playing with Teddiursa.

Pidgeot, keep watch outside.

Blaziken, come with me."

As he spoke, he threw two standard Poké Balls toward Teddiursa and the massive bear Pokémon.
