The teacher began calling out the names of the students assigned to each group, and the crowd around the gates slowly broke apart.
"Caleb Dreadmoor."
Caleb raised his hand. "Here."
"Group Three."
Caleb turned to Victor with a grin. "Looks like we're together."
Victor sighed. "Unfortunately."
"Why do you always make it sound like being around me is some kind of punishment?"
"Because it is."
Caleb laughed and headed toward the group. Victor followed, finding several unfamiliar faces already gathered there.
"Nyx."
Victor's eyes shifted toward the approaching girl. She walked over without saying anything, taking her place among the group.
Caleb looked between her and Victor. "This is getting interesting."
"What's getting interesting?"
"Nothing."
"Then stop smiling."
"I'm just happy."
"You look annoying."
Nyx glanced between them. "Are you always like this?"
"Unfortunately," Victor answered.
"Hey," Caleb protested. "I'm a great person."
Nobody responded.
