Dave was clearly nervous, but that didn't mean Marsha was guilty of anything. When Max had met her, she had struck him as a difficult person to deal with. Her senior position within the company also meant that, in many ways, she was Dave's boss.
With his investments failing, perhaps this job was the only thing he had left to rely on. He still possessed hundreds of millions, but comfortably sitting on that money required a particular attitude.
Dennis had claimed he wouldn't mind if someone chose that life, but who knew whether he would keep his word? He wasn't someone who usually rewarded laziness. Then again, perhaps a billion meant little to him.
"There's a reason we came to you instead of Marsha," Max said. "There's little chance she'll find out, and we'll keep your involvement secret. But consider this: who are you more afraid of disappointing? Marsha or your father?"
