Judging by the urgency in Max's voice, neither Fred nor Dennis had any reason to doubt him. Given their position, it was better to treat the sound as a serious threat than dismiss it and discover they were wrong.
"There are plenty of people who might want me dead," Dennis said. "We have security, but none of them carry lethal weapons. I don't know whether they'll be enough."
"Emergency services have already been called, sir," Fred replied. "However, there appears to have been a major incident in the nearby city. We already live some distance away, so it may take them a while to reach us."
Obtaining firearms in this country was difficult. Even gangs and syndicates struggled to get hold of them, and the weapons they did acquire were generally reserved for those at the very top.
