Chapter 654 - Chapter 526

The training grounds lay empty behind them, the dust still settling from their exercises. Aurélie Nakano Takeko walked with her hand resting on Anathema's hilt, her silver hair drifting in the afternoon breeze through Ooka-Hoop's towering stone structures. Beside her, Kaburo Gusaki walked, his dark gray sleeveless kimono top revealing the old scars that crisscrossed his powerful frame. Kalamaru hummed at his hip, the cursed blade's presence a constant weight against the air.

The streets of Ooka-Hoop swelled with people. Vendors lined the thoroughfares, their stalls bursting with colorful fabrics, steaming food, and handcrafted trinkets. The scent of roasted meat and sweet pastries mingled with the earthy smell of the ancient stone buildings. Children darted between adults, their laughter cutting through the ambient hum of conversation like silver bells.

Aurélie's steel-gray eyes swept the crowd with habitual vigilance. "Quite the turnout," she observed, her voice low with flat, a deliberate quality that made others lean in to hear her. "The island's people seem eager to celebrate."

Kaburo grunted, his dry voice carrying no obvious emotion. "They survived a god's wrath. A celebration is expected. People need to believe their suffering meant something."

They walked in companionable silence for a moment, weaving through the growing crowd. The streets funneled toward the central plaza, where a massive flag pole rose against the sky like a declaration of intent.

A familiar voice cut through the noise behind them.

"Hey! Wait up!"

Enan Naiporo's long-limbed frame bounded through the crowd with the fluid grace of a man who had spent years navigating high-altitude terrain. His iridescent crow-black hair in two slender braids trailing behind his right ear swing with each movement. The silver beads and dried black grass tokens woven into his hair clinked softly. He rolled a single black crow feather between his fingers, a nervous habit that had become as natural to him as breathing.

Nadina Chiriki moved beside him, her midnight-black mane pulled into a single thick braid down her spine. The dark river-silt clay across her cheekbones made her sharp features emerge from the crowd like a shadow given form. Her right thumb rested against the guard of her primary bowie-style blade, a habit so ingrained it had become part of her stillness.

Tanaka Arikushi brought up the rear, his massive shoulders parting the crowd like a ship's prow through water. The heavy bullhide-and-iron shield strapped to his left forearm was an extension of his body, and his dark charcoal-brown eyes watched the crowd with unblinking vigilance. The crescent horn birthmark wrapping around his right shoulder rippled as he shifted his weight.

Enan reached them first, his sharp, knowing smirk firmly in place. "You two heading to the ceremony? The whole island's turning out for this one."

Aurélie nodded, her silver hair shifting with the motion. "That's where we're headed. I assume the same for you?"

Nadina's quiet, smoky voice emerged from the crowd. "Wouldn't miss it. After everything that's happened... we need this." Her hazel-brown eyes held Aurélie's for a moment, something unspoken passing between them.

Tanaka's rumbling bass resonated from his chest. "Is it true one of your crew will be performing? A concert after the flag goes up?"

Aurélie's lips curved into something that was almost a smile. "Vesta. She's been preparing for days. Claims she has something special planned." She paused, her steel-gray eyes sweeping the growing crowd. "She's quite talented. It should be a good performance."

Nadina's voice carried a note of curiosity. "I heard your captain was seen in the city. Walking through the streets earlier." Her hazel-brown eyes narrowed slightly. "Does that mean she's awake?"

Aurélie shared a look with Kaburo. The swordsman shrugged, his scarred face betraying nothing.

"I don't know," Aurélie admitted, her voice flat. "We've spent most of our time training. Haven't had a chance to check on her."

Enan's smirk widened. "Training, huh? Is that what you call it? I figured you two were just avoiding the chaos."

Kaburo's dry voice cut through. "The chaos finds us regardless. No point seeking it out."

Enan laughed, the sound sharp and mocking. "Fair point. Fair point."

They merged with the crowd, the press of bodies growing thicker as they approached the plaza. The streets were a riot of color and sound—vendors hawking their wares, children running between legs, musicians tuning their instruments. The air hummed with anticipation.

Tanaka's deep voice rumbled. "Is it true you're leaving tomorrow?"

Kaburo nodded, his long, flowing dark hair shifting with the motion. "That's correct. We're verifying coordinates tonight. Plan to depart first thing in the morning."

Enan's obsidian eyes gleamed. "Leaving so soon? The party's just getting started."

Aurélie's voice was flat, unimpressed. "We have obligations. The world doesn't stop spinning because we want to celebrate."

"Cold," Enan said, shaking his head with theatrical disappointment. "Ice cold. You could at least pretend to enjoy yourself."

The crowd surged around them, funneling through the narrow streets toward the central plaza. The press of bodies was intense, the air thick with the heat of so many people gathered in one place. Conversations swirled around them.

"Did you see her? The Warlord's daughter?"

"They say she walked right through the market this morning. Her eyes—one gold, one silver."

"I heard she fought the serpent alone. Killed it with a single swing."

"Not alone. The Golden Stag was with her. The guardian of Amiso."

"Either way, she's here. And she's brought the Red Hair Emperor's protection with her."

Aurélie's steel-gray eyes swept the crowd, cataloging faces, voices, movements. The weight of Anathema against her hip was a constant reminder of why she was here.

Then she heard it.

A familiar cackle, high-pitched and wild, cutting through the ambient noise like a blade through silk.

Aurélie froze.

She placed a hand on Kaburo's shoulder, her fingers tightening just slightly. Her silver hair swayed as she turned her head, scanning the crowd for the source of the sound.

"There," she said, her voice flat. She pointed toward a gap in the crowd where a small figure was weaving through the press of bodies with manic energy.

Ember's neon-pink space buns bobbed through the crowd like beacons of chaos. Her tattered black-and-crimson Lolita dress flapped behind her, and the charred plush rabbit tied to her waist bounced with each frantic step. Her mismatched eyes—one icy blue, one gold—gleamed with manic delight as she darted between adults, her voice rising in a sing-song chant.

"Fast as fast can be! Fast as fast can be!"

Eliane Anđel's silver hair streamed behind her as she chased after Ember, her petite frame weaving through the crowd with surprising speed. Her small chef's jacket was unbuttoned over a black top, and her blue eyes sparkled with a mixture of frustration and amusement. The Lunarian wings on her back were visible, and her voice carried that bright, enthusiastic quality that made even her protests sound like encouragement.

"Get back here! The ceremony's about to start!"

Jelly "Giggles" Squish bounced after them both, his translucent blue body wobbling with each cheerful leap. His massive, starry-eyed pupils sparkled with excitement, and his tiny red bandana flapped with each bounce. His voice carried that perpetual, bubbling enthusiasm that made everything sound like an adventure.

"Bloop! You can't get away! I'm too squishy to be outrun!"

Ember paused, spinning on her heel to face her pursuers. Her mismatched eyes found Aurélie and Kaburo, and a manic grin spread across her face.

Aurélie gestured to Kaburo, her voice flat and commanding. "We'd better assist."

Kaburo nodded, his scarred face expressionless. He cut through the crowd toward Ember. Aurélie followed, her silver hair streaming behind her.

They converged on Ember from two directions, blocking her escape routes with the practiced coordination of warriors who had learned to move as one. Ember's mismatched eyes darted between them, her grin faltering for just a moment.

"Uh oh," she sing-songed making everything sound like a game.

Then Jelly landed on her shoulder with a triumphant bounce. "Gotcha! Bloop!"

Eliane skidded to a halt beside them, her chest heaving with exertion. Her olive-toned skin was flushed, and a strand of silver hair had escaped from her practical braid. She grabbed Ember's wrist, her grip firm but not painful.

"Finally!" Eliane panted, her voice carrying that bright, enthusiastic quality. "I thought she was going to get away for sure!"

Ember giggled with manic edge. "I almost did! I almost did! But then the wall appeared!" She gestured at Aurélie and Kaburo with theatrical indignation. "The wall! The wall! So unfair!"

Eliane looked up at Aurélie and Kaburo, her blue eyes shining with gratitude. "Oh good! I thought she was going to get away." She tightened her grip on Ember's wrist, beginning to pull her in the direction of the ceremony. "Thank you for helping!"

Aurélie fell into step beside them, her steel-gray eyes fixed on Ember's manic form. "Has Marya woken up?"

Eliane nodded, her silver hair swaying with the motion. "Yeah, she's already there. She's with the council. They're getting ready for the ceremony." She paused, her brow furrowing. "I have a food booth set up, but then Ember went and took off. I had to chase her halfway across the city."

Aurélie's voice was flat, curious. "We're the only ones they're waiting on, I assume?"

Eliane shook her head, her blue eyes sparkling with amusement. "No, Bō-Zak's off somewhere. But no one's trying to figure out where, so..." She shrugged, her expression saying everything.

Jelly bounced beside them, his gelatinous body rippling with excitement. "Snack time! Snack time! I'm very good at snack time! I've had years of practice!"

Ember giggled, her mismatched eyes gleaming. "Snack time! Boom boom boom!"

They rounded the corner into the central plaza, and the sight that greeted them stole the breath from Aurélie's lungs.

The plaza was a yawning desert of gray basalt, carved by centuries to hold a dense multitude. At its epicenter, a towering, milk-white column pierced the sky, throwing back the amber glare of the waning day. Behind this pillar sat a freshly erected timber platform, its dark grain shimmering under a heavy coat of wet-poured resin. Vendor booths surrounded the plaza on all sides, their colorful awnings creating a patchwork of reds, blues, and golds. The scent of roasted meat, fresh bread, and sweet pastries hung in the air like a promise of celebration.

People filled the plaza in a sea of faces—families with children, elders leaning on walking sticks, young warriors with their heads held high. A low, chaotic murmur coiled through the gathering, an invisible tide that swelled and receded to the pulse of ten thousand voices.

Vesta Lavana stood on the stage, her rainbow hair a brilliant cascade of color that shifted with each movement. Her eclectic K-pop star outfit was a splash of brightness against the wooden stage, and her platform boots clacked against the surface as she adjusted Mikasi, her living guitar. The instrument hummed with the playful will of the Huehuecoyotl fruit, its strings shimmering.

She looked up, her violet eyes sparkling with recognition as she spotted Ember, Eliane, Jelly, Aurélie, and Kaburo. Her arm shot up in an energetic wave, her rainbow hair shifting to a vibrant pink.

"Hey! Over here!" Vesta's voice called out, bright and inviting. "The show's about to start!"

Eliane waved back, her blue eyes shining with excitement. She cupped her hands around her mouth, her voice carrying across the plaza. "We're going to our booth! Good luck!"

Vesta's grin widened. "Okay! I think we're starting soon! Don't miss it!"

Eliane and Jelly waved back, their enthusiasm undimmed. Ember giggled, her mismatched eyes fixed on the stage with manic intensity.

Aurélie and Kaburo followed Eliane toward the food booth, weaving through the crowd with practiced ease. The booth was a modest structure of wood and canvas, its counter lined with trays of fresh pastries, roasted meats, and colorful fruits. A line had already formed, the people of Amiso eager to sample the wares of the mysterious newcomers.

Eliane ducked behind the counter, her silver hair swaying as she tied an apron around her waist. "Good! You can help!"

Kaburo sighed, the sound of a man who had been dragged into chaos against his will. His scarred face was expressionless, but there was something in his dark eyes that might have been resignation.

Aurélie placed a hand on his shoulder, her steel-gray eyes glinting with something that was almost amusement. "If you'd like, you can babysit." She pointed a thumb at Ember, who was already eyeing the pastries with predatory interest.

Kaburo's dry voice cut through the chaos. "I think I'd rather help with the food."

Aurélie's smirk widened. She stepped behind the counter, her silver hair falling across her face as she tied an apron around her waist.

The line grew longer as the minutes passed. People pressed forward, eager to sample Eliane's creations before the ceremony began. The air was thick with the scent of fresh bread and roasted meat, and the sounds of laughter and conversation filled the plaza.

Eliane moved with practiced efficiency, her small hands working with the speed of a master chef. She plated pastries, ladled soups, and poured drinks with the fluid grace of someone who had been doing this her entire life.

"Here you go!" Eliane's voice carried that bright, enthusiastic quality. "Fresh cloud-berry tarts! My grandmother's recipe!"

A young woman accepted the pastry with a grateful smile. "Thank you! I've heard so much about your cooking!"

Eliane's blue eyes sparkled with pride. "I hope you enjoy it!"

Jelly bounced beside her, his gelatinous body rippling with excitement. "Bloop! I want one! I want one!"

Eliane rolled her eyes with affectionate exasperation. "You already had three!"

Jelly's massive starry eyes widened with indignation. "Three is not enough! Three is barely a snack! I need at least five! Maybe six! Bloop!"

Ember giggled, her mismatched eyes gleaming. "Boom boom boom! Pastry explosion!"

Kaburo sighed again, his scarred face betraying nothing. "This is going to be a very long ceremony."

Aurélie's lips curved into that almost-smile. "You're just now realizing that?"
