Chapter 655 - Chaptere 526.1

The crowd shifted, a ripple of anticipation passing through the plaza like a wave. Conversation died down, replaced by a growing silence that pressed against the air itself.

Aurélie looked up, her steel-gray eyes finding the source of the shift.

The Dual Flame Council emerged from the Administrative Building, their presence commanding attention without a single word spoken. Ash Dasan moved at the head of the group, his massive frame supported by a walking cane. His dark eyes swept the crowd with the quiet authority of a man who had earned his place through blood and sacrifice. His buffalo-hide vest was simple and unadorned, and his ironwood lance was strapped to his back.

Eldon Gretok walked beside him, his weary baritone voice carrying the weight of history. His high-quality, dark-brown Phanek and intricately decorated buffalo robe with geometric quillwork patterns that represented historical events. He wore it like a senator's toga, the weight of the Winter Count pressing down on his shoulders.

Felice Pippas followed, her sharp, calculating eyes sweeping the crowd with diplomatic assessment. Her tailored, dark-blue Bio-Loom robe blended the flowing lines of a Manipuri Innaphi with the structured cut of a World Government officer's coat. The silver buffalo crest at her collar gleamed.

Nola Lorn moved with the quiet grace of a woman who had spent her life tending to the spiritual health of her people. Her elegant, heavy, dark-blue Bio-Loom robe was adorned with intricate Lakota quillwork patterns representing the stars and the moon. Her beaded headband with a single eagle feather, and her small pouch of medicinal herbs hung at her waist.

Rudra Soul brought up the rear, his deep, resonant baritone speaking with the weight of prophecy. His elaborate, ceremonial buffalo robe was dyed a deep red and heavily adorned with quillwork, eagle feathers, and symbols of his visions. A single eagle feather was tucked into his hair, and his sacred pipe, Cannupa, was clutched in his hands.

Galit Varuna walked behind them, his long neck held in that loose, observant S-curve. His sharp emerald eyes swept the crowd with tactical assessment, and the twin Vipera whips at his hips—Current's Deception—were coiled and ready. In his hands, he carried the folded flag.

The Red Hair Emperor's flag.

The black fabric was emblazoned with the crimson scar across the skull's eye, its eye sockets crossed by swords.

Marya walked beside Galit, her long raven hair flowing behind her like a banner of midnight. Her leather jacket with the Heart Pirates Insignia was zipped halfway, and her denim shorts and tall combat boots were a stark contrast to the formal attire of the council members. The weight of Nisshoku was a familiar presence on her back, and her mismatched eyes—one gold, one half silver—swept the crowd with guarded curiosity.

The silence was absolute.

Every eye in the plaza fixed on the flag, on Marya, on the council. The weight of history pressed down on the moment, thick and heavy.

Nola Lorn stepped forward, her warm, gentle voice carrying across the plaza with the authority of a woman who had spent her life speaking for the people.

She held the silence for a long moment, letting it settle over the crowd like a blanket.

Then she began to speak.

"My people. My children. My family."

Her voice was soft, but it carried. It carried across the plaza, across the streets, across the island itself. It carried the weight of generations, of stories told around fires, of songs sung in the dark, of prayers whispered to the wind.

"We have gathered today to witness something that has not happened in four hundred years. We have gathered to raise a flag that is not our own. We have gathered to declare to the world that we are no longer alone."

A murmur rippled through the crowd. Nola held up her hand, and silence returned.

"We have faced challenges and travesties that would have broken lesser peoples. We have lost loved ones—parents, children, brothers, sisters. We have watched the world outside our borders grow darker and more dangerous. We have been betrayed by those we trusted. We have stood at the edge of the abyss and looked into its depths."

Her voice trembled, just slightly, and she paused to compose herself.

"But we did not fall. We did not break. We stood together, as we have always stood together, and we faced the darkness."

She gestured toward Marya, her hand sweeping through the air with the grace of a storyteller.

"We were aided by those who came from beyond our shores. Strangers who owed us nothing, who had no reason to fight for us, who could have sailed away and left us to our fate. But they did not. They stood beside us. They bled beside us. They risked everything—their lives, their futures, their very souls—to protect our home."

The crowd's gaze shifted to Marya, to Galit, to the gathered crew. Whispers rippled through the plaza, soft and filled with wonder.

Nola's voice rose, filled with a passion that ignited the air itself.

"Today, we raise the flag of the Red Hair Emperor. We declare to the world that Amiso is under his protection. That those who would seek to harm us will face the wrath of one of the Four Emperors. That we will no longer stand alone against the darkness."

She paused, her warm brown eyes sweeping the crowd with the love of a mother who had seen her children survive the impossible.

"But let us not forget the cost. Let us not forget those who are no longer with us. Let us not forget the blood that was spilled, the lives that were lost, the sacrifices that were made. We honor them today. We honor their memory by standing together, by refusing to be broken, by choosing hope over despair."

The silence stretched, thick and heavy.

Nola's voice dropped, soft and intimate, as if she were speaking to each person individually. "We are not perfect. We have made mistakes. We have trusted the wrong people. We have compromised when we should have stood firm. But we have learned. We have grown. We have become stronger."

She lifted her chin, her voice rising with a power that came from somewhere older than memory.

"Today, we choose a different path. Today, we choose to reach out and embrace the wider world. Today, we choose to trust, to hope, to believe that there is goodness beyond our borders. And we will not be alone. We will face the future together, as we have faced the past, with courage, with determination, and with love."

The crowd erupted into cheers.

The sound was a wave, a force of nature that swept through the plaza and carried everyone in its wake. People wept openly, their faces streaked with tears of joy and grief. They embraced each other, strangers and friends alike, united by the power of the moment.

Nola stepped back, her warm eyes shining with unshed tears.

Eldon Gretok and Rudra Soul stepped forward, their faces solemn. They moved to Galit's side, and he handed them the folded flag with a nod of respect.

The two elders took the flag, their hands steady despite their age. They walked to the flag pole, their footsteps measured and deliberate. The crowd fell silent again, watching with bated breath as they attached the flag to the rope.

Together, they began to raise it.

The black fabric rose against the blue sky, the skull with crimson eye patch seeming to glow in the afternoon sun. The flag fluttered in the breeze, a declaration of intent that whispered promises of protection and defiance in equal measure that stretched across the island and beyond.

The flag reached the top of the pole, and Eldon and Rudra secured the rope.

The crowd erupted into cheers again, louder this time. The sound was a roar, a tide of joy and relief that washed over the plaza like a wave.

Marya stood at the edge, her mismatched eyes fixed on the flag. Her expression was unreadable, but something flickered in her gaze—a recognition, perhaps, or a quiet, terrible understanding.

Galit moved to stand beside her, his sharp emerald eyes sweeping the crowd. "Well," he said, with that sharp, intelligent edge. "That went better than expected."

Marya's lips curved into something that was almost a smile. "Don't jinx it."

Vesta bounded onto the stage, her rainbow hair a brilliant cascade of color. She struck a dramatic pose, her platform boots clacking against the wooden surface. Mikasi hummed in her grip, the guitar's playful will responding to her energy.

"Welcome everybody!" Vesta's voice bellowed across the plaza with the power of a natural performer. "Let's get this party started!"

She strummed the guitar, and a wave of sound erupted from the instrument. It was bright and energetic, a melody that danced through the air like living fire. The crowd responded instantly, their cheers rising to meet the music.

Vesta's voice joined the melody, clear and powerful, with a song that speaks of hope and defiance and joy. Her rainbow hair shifted with each note, and her body moved with the rhythm of the music.

Jelly bounced among the crowd, his gelatinous body rippling with excitement. "Bloop! Music time! Music time!"

Eliane grabbed Jelly's hand, her blue eyes sparkling with delight. "Come on! Let's dance!"

Ember giggled, her mismatched eyes gleaming with manic intensity. "Boom boom boom! Dance dance dance!"

Nadina Chiriki moved through the crowd, her midnight-black braid swaying with each step. Her hazel-brown eyes swept the plaza, cataloging every face, every movement. The dark river-silt clay across her cheekbones caught the light as she turned her head.

Enan Naiporo fell into step beside her, his iridescent crow-black hair gleaming with dark navy and deep indigo sheen. His sharp, knowing smirk was firmly in place.

"Well," he said, his smooth, raspy voice carrying that mocking lilt. "This is certainly more exciting than watching the grass grow."

Nadina's quiet, smoky voice emerged from the crowd. "You're just happy there's free food."

Enan's grin widened. "That too. That too."

Tanaka Arikushi moved through the crowd like a wall, his massive frame parting the press of bodies with effortless strength. His dark charcoal-brown eyes swept the crowd with unblinking vigilance, and his heavy bullhide-and-iron shield was a familiar weight on his arm.

Ash Dasan leaned on his walking cane, his dark eyes fixed on the dancing crowd. His weathered face creased with a rare smile, the ghost of something that might have been joy.

Yuma Dasan rushed to his father's side, his dark, solemn eyes shining with excitement. His wild, unkempt mane of deep charcoal-black hair was matted with sweat and dust, and the simple hemp cord around his neck—with its unpolished sacred river stone—pressed against his chest.

Aya Calian followed him, her deep brown eyes bright with joy. Her simple, earth-toned robe was dusty, her beaded hair tie askew, and her smile was the widest it had been in days.

"This is amazing!" Yuma's soft, melodic whispered across the plaza. "I've never seen anything like this!"

Ash's voice was a low rumble, warm with paternal pride. "It is. It really is."

Aya nodded, her deep brown eyes fixed on the stage. "The music... it's beautiful. It makes me feel... hopeful."

Galit Varuna moved through the crowd, his long neck held in that loose, observant S-curve. His sharp emerald eyes swept the plaza with tactical assessment, but there was something else in his gaze—a warmth that he rarely allowed others to see.

Vesta's music swelled, filling the plaza with a melody that seemed to speak of new beginnings. Her rainbow hair shifted with each note, and her violet eyes sparkled with the joy of performance.

The celebration had begun.

---

Later, when the sun had dipped below the horizon and the stars began to emerge, the flag of the Red Hair Emperor still flew over Ooka-Hoop. Its black fabric rippled in the night breeze, the skull glowing in the moonlight.

Marya stood at the edge of the plaza, her mismatched eyes fixed on the flag. Her long raven hair swayed in the wind, and her leather jacket with the Heart Pirates Insignia was zipped against the evening chill.

Sanza Kaplan Figarland rushed to her side, his small frame vibrating with barely contained energy. His red hair was a mess of tangles, and his bamboo practice sword was tucked into his belt. His high-crust posh accent cut through the ambient noise.

"Big Sis! Are you coming to the after-party? Vesta's going to play another set, and Eliane's making something called 'firecracker pastries,' and Jelly says he's going to bounce off the walls—"

Marya's lips curved into a small smile. "I'll be there in a moment. I just need a minute."

Sanza's brow furrowed with concern. "Are you okay?"

Marya nodded, her mismatched eyes still fixed on the flag. "I'm fine. Just thinking."

Sanza's small hand found her arm, his grip firm. "Don't worry, Big Sis. Everything's going to be okay. I promise."

Marya looked down at him, something softening in her gaze. "I know," she said, her voice quiet. "I know."

She placed a hand on his head, ruffling his red hair with a gentleness that surprised even her.

"Now go," she said, with a note of warmth. "Enjoy the celebration. I'll be there soon."

Sanza nodded, his piercing eyes shining with determination. "Okay! But don't take too long! The party's just getting started!"

He darted off, his small form disappearing into the crowd.

Marya watched him go, her mismatched eyes fixed on the flag. The weight of Nisshoku was a familiar presence on her back, and the pull of her mother's legacy was a constant hum beneath her skin.

She didn't know what the future held. She didn't know if she would survive the coming battles, or if she would ever find the answers she was seeking.

But for now, in this moment, she was alive.

And that was enough.
