For Mai and Ty Lee, the biggest regret of their lives was probably meeting Azula — that demoness. Nothing else even came close.
Although not all their memories with Azula were terrible — sometimes they genuinely got along — they still regretted it the moment Azula extended this particular invitation.
"...I must have misheard. You want us to what? Rebel?"
Mai's voice was calm, her expression cool as always, but inside she was numb with shock.
"Azula, that's not funny."
She emphasized the words, hoping desperately that it was just another one of Azula's twisted jokes.
But she was destined for disappointment.
"Don't you think it's exciting to be part of such an interesting operation?" Azula spread her hands dramatically, smiling. "Don't look so miserable, Mai. See? Ty Lee looks happy."
"…That's not what I'd call happy."
Ty Lee looked like she was on the verge of tears — maybe already crying.
And honestly, who wouldn't cry after hearing a proposal to overthrow the Fire Lord?
Mai then glanced at Kahn, standing nearby, silently begging for backup.
"Kahn, you wouldn't go crazy with Azula… right?"
Kahn hated dangerous, troublesome things, and given Azula's feelings for him, maybe he could shut this madness down.
But Kahn scratched his cheek awkwardly and said.
"Actually… I'm the one who started this plan."
"?!"
"?!!"
Mai froze, staring at him as if he had grown a second head.
I can't believe you're THIS kind of Kahn!
She turned her gaze to Azula again, completely stunned.
Kahn suggested rebelling against your own father, and not only did you agree — you're actively recruiting us?!
What kind of black-hearted, elbow-bending little cotton-padded jacket ARE you?!
Suddenly, enlightenment struck her.
She had always wondered why Azula liked Kahn. Was it because… they were the same type of terrifying person?
She had silently wished Kahn good luck before.
But apparently she and Ty Lee were the ones who needed protection.
The clown was her all along.
Either way, once you boarded Azula's pirate ship, escape was impossible.
Fortunately, besides Azula's coercion and manipulation, Kahn sincerely explained the truth: why he and Azula were doing this, what Ozai had done, and the secrets behind the palace.
Hearing all that, Mai and Ty Lee were shocked — but also relieved. At least Kahn saw them as real allies, not disposable tools.
Once they fully understood the situation, Ty Lee finally found her voice.
"So… this isn't rebellion. It's overthrowing Fire Lord Ozai's evil rule, right?"
"Of course." Azula snapped her fingers, pleased.
"This is a righteous crusade! And I, having recognized my father's wickedness, am naturally the wise and mighty Princess Azula who chooses justice over blood."
"And you, of course, will be loyal national heroes whose glorious deeds will be admired by generations."
"…That actually sounds kind of good…"
Ty Lee was easy to sway, and honestly, aside from Azula's ego, the logic wasn't wrong.
Mai, however, remained unmoved.
"I don't care about any of that. I just have one question. Are you sure you can succeed?"
"Of course." Azula smirked. "When have we ever failed?"
Kahn added, "We didn't come up with this on impulse. Everything is prepared. Even Iroh supports the plan."
"And Zuko too. He'll sneak back into the capital soon."
"…Fine." Mai finally gave in.
She sighed, "But let me say this now: if things go wrong, I'm leaving."
Kahn smiled, "Don't worry. You won't get the chance."

After convincing Mai and Ty Lee, Kahn only needed to wait for Iroh and Zuko to defect and return.
According to the plan, Iroh would find an opportunity soon. He was to escape and contact Kahn afterward.
A few days later, Kahn went to the Spirit World as usual — but Iroh didn't appear. That alone told him everything: the escape had begun.
Days passed with no sign of Iroh. What puzzled Kahn was how quiet everything remained in the physical world.
No panic. No rumors. Nothing.
And then Azula returned from the palace with news.
"Iroh and Zuko suddenly defected. The army failed to react in time and lost them. Father was furious in the war room — demoted half the room."
Azula described the scene with visible satisfaction.
Their abrupt escape had caught Ozai off guard. His rage-filled but helpless display in the war room was almost pathetic.
The reason the outside world was silent was simple: Ozai had sealed all information.
When Admiral Jeong Jeong defected years ago, the fallout was enormous. Many soldiers followed suit, causing chaos and major losses.
If news of Iroh's rebellion — far more influential than Jeong Jeong — spread, the nation would erupt.
So Ozai immediately ordered absolute silence.
Anyone leaking information was executed.
As for Zuko? Ozai didn't care. A "useless" exiled son wasn't worth fussing over.
What bothered Ozai most was this:
Why?
Why did Iroh, who had endured humiliation for so many years, suddenly choose to defect now?
What is his plan? What is he scheming?
For the first time, Ozai felt something slipping out of his control — but he didn't know what. That uncertainty made him anxious. Paranoid.
And through it all, Azula — who had long slipped out of his grasp — stood quietly behind him, watching him with cold eyes.
A beast waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
