Chapter 10 - Behind the Play

Chapter 10: Behind the Play

Sunday, November 1, 2009

The win over Chesterfield didn't lead to a huge celebration.

There were no shirts being thrown around or loud chants filling the stadium. The players were happy, but it was a quieter kind of happiness.

They knew they had played well.

Inside the changing room, Dev Patel threw a water bottle at Leo Morley.

"You owe me for that assist," Dev said with a grin.

Leo threw it straight back.

"Please. You only passed because you were too tired to run any further."

The room filled with laughter.

Niels stood near the wall and watched them.

He liked moments like this. After a match, when everyone was relaxed, he could see the players differently. The way they talked, joked and reacted to each other told him things that training couldn't.

His eyes settled on Leo.

Leo was still joking with the others, but Niels noticed how focused he was even after the game.

Late bloomer.

Leo wasn't one of the team's biggest names yet, but he had a habit of appearing when Crawley needed him. Today's goal was another example.

Niels looked over at Luka.

Luka was sitting on the bench with his boots off, quietly listening to the others. He seemed to be thinking about the match rather than celebrating it.

Good under pressure. Plenty of room to grow.

Luka had a natural ability to find space and keep the ball even when defenders closed him down. If he continued improving, Niels thought he could become an important player for the team.

Then Niels noticed Tom Whitehall.

Tom was sitting on the bench, stretching his legs. He moved carefully and winced slightly as he straightened one of them.

Niels made a mental note.

He's getting tired. Need to manage his minutes.

Tom had played hard in almost every match, but Niels knew they couldn't keep pushing him like this forever.

The season was still long.

There was no point losing an important player because they had used him too much too early.

Later that evening, Niels was back in the staff office.

The room was quiet except for the laptop playing match footage. Milan sat nearby, writing notes in his notebook.

Niels stopped the video and rewound a few seconds.

"Look at this," he said. "See where Luka drops during the build-up?"

Milan watched the screen.

"Yeah."

"I didn't expect him to spot that space so quickly."

Milan gave a small smile.

"Neither did I."

Niels replayed the move. Luka had dropped into the space between Chesterfield's midfield and defence before receiving the ball and starting the attack.

"He's improving quickly," Niels said. "A few weeks ago, he would've just stayed higher. Now he's starting to see the game differently."

Milan leaned back in his chair.

"That's because you're helping him."

Niels looked at him.

"I'm not doing that much."

"You are," Milan said. "Don't give yourself so little credit."

Niels smiled and turned back to the screen.

"Maybe. Or maybe we just got lucky."

Milan laughed quietly.

But when Niels looked at him again, he noticed how tired he seemed.

Milan quickly returned to his notes, as if nothing was wrong.

The weather was cold and windy.

The players were still in a good mood after the win over Chesterfield, but training was focused. Nobody was getting carried away.

During a small-sided game, Niels noticed Reece Darby moving inside too early.

"Reece, stay wide!" Niels shouted. "Don't come inside yet. Wait for the ball."

Reece moved back toward the touchline.

A few seconds later, he received the ball, took on his marker and got past him.

"Better!" Niels called.

Reece smiled and kept going.

Niels made a quick note to himself.

He's getting more confident. Give him more freedom.

Jamal Osei was having another strong session.

He was constantly talking, telling his teammates where to move and warning them when someone was out of position.

"Left side!"

"Man on!"

"Keep the shape!"

The younger players were starting to listen to him more.

Niels noticed the difference.

He's becoming a leader.

Then Niels turned his attention to Max Simons.

The striker was moving differently compared to a few weeks ago. Instead of waiting for the ball near the box, he was dropping deeper, looking for space and trying to create chances for himself and others.

Niels watched as Simons pulled away from a defender before turning and running toward goal.

He's starting to understand more than just scoring.

Milan's whistle suddenly brought everyone back together.

He stood near the centre of the pitch with his scarf pulled tightly around his neck. His face was still pale, but his voice was clear.

"Port Vale next," Milan said. "They'll press hard and fight for every ball. If they can't play through us, they'll go long. We need to be ready for that."

The players nodded.

Nobody needed a long speech.

They knew another difficult game was coming.

That Afternoon

The players were in the canteen when the FA Cup second-round draw came through.

Most of the squad gathered around Niels' phone to listen.

"Crawley Town will travel to Wycombe Wanderers," the announcer said.

The room went quiet for a second.

Then came the groans.

"League One team," Dev said, shaking his head.

Simons laughed and slapped him on the shoulder.

"So what? We're playing well. We'll beat them."

A few of the players laughed.

Niels stayed quiet.

Wycombe were a stronger team, and he already knew they wouldn't be easy. He started thinking about their pressing, how they defended set pieces and where Crawley might find space.

But he pushed those thoughts aside.

Port Vale came first.

They needed to focus on the league and keep climbing the table.

He could worry about Wycombe later.

For now, there was another three points to fight for.

Later That Week

Niels spent more time watching match footage and taking notes.

He wasn't only looking at tactics anymore. He watched the players too. Who wanted the ball when things got difficult? Who lost confidence? Who kept working when the pressure increased?

During one training session, Niels noticed Whitehall was struggling to keep up. He was a little slower getting to loose balls and seemed to be favouring one leg.

After training, Niels spoke to the physio.

"Keep an eye on Whitehall. Take some of the load off him before Saturday. I don't want him going into the match tired."

By Thursday, the squad was ready for the trip to Port Vale.

Their bags were loaded onto the bus while the players climbed aboard. Most had their headphones on, while others talked quietly.

Dev and Luka sat together, talking about the Chesterfield game and laughing at something on Dev's phone.

Reece leaned against the window with his eyes closed, listening to music.

Simons sat with his boot bag beside him, already focused on the match ahead.

Niels stood outside for a moment, watching everyone get settled.

He was starting to notice more about the players than he used to.

Some were improving quickly. Others needed more time. A few needed to be pushed, while others needed to be given a break.

Niels still didn't have all the answers.

But he was learning.

He turned toward Milan.

The manager was a few steps behind the others, looking through some notes before putting them away. He took a moment before climbing onto the bus.

Nothing dramatic.

Just a little slower than usual.

Niels watched him for a second, then followed the team onto the bus.

He didn't say anything, but he couldn't help noticing it.
