I went sluggishly, and with a heavy heart into my bedroom once Gamma left for his own quarters. He had told me that he did all he could but Avira could not be saved. The impact of the sound Mira made when the ritual started took its toll on her.
I saw Avira, looking more lifeless than ever on the bed with her eyes shut closed. Declan had her hand wrapped in his. With his thumb, Declan gently tapped the pale skin of her hand with a sense of duty. Although he let go of her hand the moment he saw me, he took it back up the next second, and continued to tap on it.
Something felt off in the way he dropped her hand, and then picked it up again but I was in too much sadness to dwell on it, or the fact that Declan was in my room, and holding Avira's hand with so much gentleness.
Maybe he feels genuinely remorseful, and he's only whispering his apologies now that Gamma has confirmed that she will not survive it.
