As soon as he finished reading through the newly-acquired abilities, Damien felt something bubbling inside him—A giddy, uncontrollable excitement.
This was it.This was the moment he had been waiting for ever since arriving in Orario.
The ability to summon shadows.
A power that could shift the balance of the entire Babel Dungeon… a power that could allow him to rival an entire Familia alone. He opened the skill descriptions, heart thumping.
[Skill: Shadow Extraction]Shadow Power. No mana required.Extracts mana from a lifeless body and turns it into a Shadow Soldier. The failure rate is proportional to the target's stats and the time elapsed since their death.
[Skill: Shadow Preservation]Shadow Capacity: (0/20)Shadow Storage allows the user to store the Shadows they have created inside their own shadow, as well as summon and reabsorb them at will.
After reading the effects, there was only one thought in Damien's mind.
Igris.
He turned toward the fallen knight's armored corpse.Even lifeless, it radiated the dignity of an unyielding warrior.
Damien approached slowly, excitement still simmering beneath his skin. Then—He stood in front of the corpse, closed his eyes, and whispered:
"Arise."
A burst of mana surged outward like a shockwave—But the corpse didn't move.
[You Have Failed To Extract The Shadow][You have two chances left]
Damien exhaled through his nose.
"I see how it is… conviction matters. I remember that."
He straightened, inhaled once, and opened his eyes with renewed focus.
"Arise!"
Mana erupted again—And again, nothing.
Damien clicked his tongue.
"I see how it is…"
He remembered.Even Sung Jin-Woo had to speak to Igris directly—Acknowledging him, respecting him.
So Damien walked closer and knelt.
"Igris… listen."
His voice echoed in the silent marble hall.
"The Shadow Monarch… the War of Monarchs… that era is gone."
He placed a hand on the knight's shattered chestplate.
"This world—this place—is something new. A world made of adventure. Unknown lands, monsters, gods, heroes… things you have never seen."
He lowered his head a little.
"So I'll make it simple."
He looked into the empty helmet.
"Igris… do you want to see this world? Do you want to walk its adventures… with me? As my knight? If so… then—"
He stood straight, voice steady and commanding.
"Arise."
The response was instant.
Shadows burst up from the floor beneath Damien's feet, swirling like a storm. They coiled around Igris's body, swallowing the armor whole. The marble trembled as the knight's form was devoured—And then rebuilt.
A figure of pure shadow rose from the darkness, kneeling at Damien's feet. His red eyes gleamed like twin flames.
[You Have Obtained Shadow Knight: Igris]
Damien smiled faintly.
"There we go… that's the right choice. My knight."
As the shadows settled, he checked his capacity.
[Shadow Capacity: 11/20]
"Taking eleven spots, huh?" he muttered, scratching the back of his neck. "Well… you're worth it."
He turned toward the exit, feeling the silent presence of his first shadow behind him.
"Now then… let's get out of here."
And with his new knight at his back, Damien stepped forward—Into the world that awaited his rise.
...
As soon as Damien stepped back onto the Thirteenth Floor, a sudden realization struck him.
"…Wait a minute."
He paused, eyes narrowing as he flipped through his system notifications.Nothing. No new prompt. No new item. No new key.
"I didn't receive the key for the next Dungeon," he muttered. "So there's some other condition? A requirement I missed?"
Damien sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose.Annoying, but not important for now.
Before he could dwell on it further, a small sound echoed through the hallway—a soft rumbling growl.
An Infant Dragon stepped out of the mist. Its wings fluttered nervously, its fangs bared as it crept toward him.
Damien smirked.
"Ah… perfect. A good test."He raised his hand, palm open."Arise."
Igris' shadow erupted from beneath Damien's feet—sharp, swift, and silent. The knight blitzed forward with a speed the Infant Dragon never had a chance to respond to.
SHRAK—!
One clean strike. The Infant Dragon split in two, collapsing lifelessly.
Damien walked toward the corpse, watching as it began shimmering with motes of light—its natural process before being absorbed by the Dungeon.
He wasn't done, though.
"Arise."
The light flickered… then twisted. The motes darkened, turning into dense black smoke.A moment later, a new form emerged: a small, dark-scaled Infant Dragon with glowing red eyes.
It bowed its head to Damien.
Damien's grin widened into something pure and victorious.
"Oh yes… This changes everything," he whispered."That means all monsters inside Babel's Dungeon can become shadows."
The possibilities surged through his mind—the floors, the monsters, the armies he could build.
"Well… then it's time to reach the 18th Floor," Damien said as he turned toward the descending path."Let's see what this 'Under Resort' is all about."
His steps echoed through the corridor, steady and confident.
His path was clear now.
...
Floors 13 to 17 turned out to be more of a stroll than a struggle—at least for Damien. With Igris at his side and a steadily growing entourage of shadows, the descent had become a systematic sweep.
Another Infant Dragon.One Silverback.Three Hellhounds.And three Minotaurs.
Each defeated, extracted, and folded neatly into Damien's shadow army as he made his way ever downward. His capacity slowly filled, but his confidence soared—every new shadow added another layer of safety between him and danger.
By the time he reached the final path toward the 18th Floor, he could feel the pressure shift. The Dungeon's atmosphere thickened.Even the stone vibrated faintly.
Because this was where the first true Boss Monster lurked.
Floor 17's Monster Rex.
A Level 4 titan that respawned every two weeks.
And Damien had arrived just in time.
Unfortunately… someone else had arrived first.
He heard the crash before he saw it.
BOOOOM—!!
Dust exploded across the cavern as a massive seven-meter gray monster hurled a fully armored tank of an adventurer straight into the wall. The poor guy slammed into the stone with a crunch that echoed down the hall.
The Monster Rex—Goliath—bellowed, its roar shaking loose pebbles from the cavern ceiling.
Damien blinked once.
"…Okay," he said under his breath, watching the party scramble in panic."These guys definitely need help."
