3Chapter 7

Amelia, well Amy Piggot now, turned her head away from the cartoon on TV, it was one she had seen before anyway, where the rabbit terrorized the bald guy trying to shoot him.

Alucard called these things part of a classic education, though at the moment he was getting into some weird cartoons from Japan.

Emily sat at the table going over paperwork from her job, it wasn't long until dinner though Amy wasn't feeling that hungry.

Her gaze lingered on Emily's forearm, and the long ragged scar that ran along it from her wrist nearly to her elbow. It was healed over now, the stitches having been removed late last year.

Amy was less worried about the fact a killer had broken into the apartment they were staying in and more concerned that the woman who cared for her was hurt.

She didn't remember her real mother, some vague images and maybe a voice. She knew her father a little more, though he only had her for two years. She remembered him being kind and caring despite his rough exterior and the tone he sometimes took with others. She recalled he could be scary, but he never was with her.

She remembered when she got hurt tripping down the stairs and he had rushed her to the hospital, even though it was just some bruising and a sprained ankle. He had bought her a little skeleton plushie from the gift shop, evidently they still had some of their Halloween stock after Christmas. She remembered getting home and finding the house had been trashed and how angry he was at that. She still had Mr. Skullhead, he sat next to the Alucard plush she had been given.

Emily. Well Amy wasn't sure how she felt about the woman. Having seen all the scars she had Amy was worried about her, at least she was hoping it was worry about the woman, and not the fact her death would send Amy some where else.

Emily was... not cold exactly, it was clear she was trying to connect with Amy, but she didn't know what she was doing. Not that Amy knew what she was supposed to do either.

Alucard was a little better, he told her stories of things, usually graphic stories, or with weird endings, but he was enthusiastic about them even if she didn't understand half of what he meant sometimes.

Amy wasn't sure what was going on between Emily and Alucard, the pair argued a lot. Well Emily fussed at Alucard and he usually said or did something that made her madder, though Amy thought he did care about her, but he had a strange way of showing it. She was pretty sure they were not married or anything.

Amy knew Emily was the cape known as Slayer. Alucard didn't even try to hide himself most of the time unless they went out with Emily out of costume.

Then he was usually a weird looking Dachshund type of dog, or a girl about Amy's age. That was really really weird.

Still Amy needed to think about this, she might as well see what Alucard was doing on the laptop.

Emily watched Alucard and Amy try and play Civilization on the laptop as she worked on her own feelings about the girl, trying to ignore Alucard losing his shit over a nuke happy Gandhi.

She liked the girl, it had only been, maybe a year and a half since the adoption went through, though it had only been the last couple of months where she had gotten comfortable with the idea of the girl being around.

Oddly she found herself worrying about what Amy thought of her, the girl had already been through two other homes in the course of her life, and the chances of seeing her father again were nonexistent. Marquis was in the Birdcage despite his cooperation the BBPD and the PRT, the judge had thrown the book at him for his crimes, which to be fair were rather long, varied, and violent, particularly when he was younger.

The Brockton Bay Brigade on the other hand had taken him being sent to the Birdcage as a victory for themselves, despite nearly everyone local knowing otherwise. And used that stolen valor to change their name to New Wave trying to set themselves in a new direction. They also unmasked as a way to try and bring about accountability of capes or whatever other bullshit they spun. To Emily it looked like an attempt to cover up for their own actions at violating the unwritten rules.

It had cost them however. Fleur had refused to unmask and had left the team, storming off after a rather vocal, and very public, argument with the elders of the team.

This also evidently led to a break up between her and Lightstar, as well as a threat of legal action if they did anything with her likeness with their new team.

It seems however that Fluer had the right idea as only a few months later Lightstar was attacked in his home by a gang member. Though Lightstar survived, at last word he was still in the hospital as the gang member had tried to kill him with a bomb in order to make a name for himself.

Word was that several of the gangs that had risen to power since Marquis was Birdcaged, showed their displeasure at the violation of the unwritten rules and what was left of the man was smeared across a billboard for the law firm Brandish was part of in midtown.

It might have also been a message to New Wave of what would happen if they tried what they did with Marquis to any one else.

Emily was glad she was away from that shit show, and found herself pleasantly surprised she was happy to have gotten Amy out of it as well.

Emily was considering what to get for dinner, and not for the first time wondering if she should take some cooking classes as not to need to rely on take out, or Alucard. The damn vampire got far too smug when he cooked.

Of course that was when her work phone rang..

Emily frowned as the theme from 'Who's the boss?' played on the phone. She sighed and rose scooping up the phone to walk into the other room with a curious glance from Amy as Alucard got nuked by Gandhi again.

Closing the door behind her she answered the phone.

"Hello Director. What can I do for you?"

"Hello Emily." Chief Director Brown stated. "Sorry to bother you when you're off shift, but we're looking to transfer you from Chicago and I figured you might want to know as soon as possible."

"Why is that Director, where am I being sent this time?"

"With Lab-Rat and the Chicago Chopper either no longer in the city or in jail, the city itself has less problems and too many capes. For the time being we plan to put you in Boston. Director Armstrong has requested more personnel to deal with the growing number of crimes related to the Teeth, as well the influx of new capes that seem to be moving into a power vacuum left by some of our more successful efforts in the city. You'll report to Bastion as his second in command, hopefully you'll also share some of your PR experience with him, he has a bit of a temper."

"Understood, though if I take this assignment I want it to be permanent, several years at least. Amy needs some sort of stability and bouncing around to hot spots for PR stunts is a bit much." Emily stated.

"That should be acceptable. I won't say that I'm not going to send you other places, but arraigning permanent housing in the city should not be a problem, even with Alucard, provided you can get him to behave."

"I should be able to do that."

"Good. I'll have everything arraigned in two or three days, and you should be in Boston by next Tuesday. I'll have your lodging information and everything else you need by the time you get there." The director paused. "I'll look into getting the information needed to enroll Amy in one of the schools for you as well."

Emily blinked. "Thank you Director I wasn't expecting that."

"You've done good work Emily. It's the least I can do for you. If there's nothing else I have a few more calls to make before I'm done for the day."

"No director, that should be fine, thank you." Emily stated as the phone clicked to a dead line.

"TAKE THAT, PEACE, LOVE, AND FUCK YOU GHANDI!" Alucard shouted from the other room.

"LANGUAGE!" Emily shouted back.

[?]

"Well, that's done." Rebecca sighed. "Now do you mind telling me why I needed to send Piggot to Boston?"

"That is where the path has put her to be the most use to us." Contessa responded.

"The path cannot predict Alucard, he is like the Endbringers themselves in that regard. It can however path Emily Piggot, and she controls Alucard." Doctor-Mother pointed out. "Keeping Piggot happy is the best way to we can continue with our mission."

"Is that why we went through all that trouble to make sure New Wave went after Marquis again? Just so he would give up his kid? That could have gone very wrong." Rebecca grumbled. "All that fiddling with the networks so he would catch that Oprah episode was a pain in the ass."

"The path predicted it would not go wrong." Contessa stated.

"Wouldn't it just be easier to take her out to remove the projection as well?" Numbers Man asked.

"No, we have pathed that already and if she is killed by us then all our plans are for nothing. Alucard will do something and it will bring about the end of Cauldron and everyone involved with it even remotely." Doctor Mother pointed out.

"The end?" Rebecca asked.

"Yes. Even yours." Doctor Mother stated.

"So what does Alucard do?" Numbers Man asked.

"He goes for a walk." Contessa stated with a small shudder.

3Chapter 8

Andrew Fallingleaf twitched lightly at the screech and the raucous laughter that followed.

His eyes lifted from the glass he was polishing to the group of bikers in the corner and the girl that they had picked up. He couldn't tell if she was genuinely laughing or terrified to do anything else.

Poor little platinum blonde had likely seen the bikes outside and rode up thinking this was just some biker bar. The road leathers she wore were just tight enough to draw the attention of the ones in the bar and that wound up being trouble for her. She hadn't even had a chance to take off her riding goggles yet before she was drawn into some bullshit.

He let out a small sigh dropping his gaze back to cleaning the glass with a bar rag.

He had moved to Boston in the 80s working the docks until Leviathan had killed that line of work for everybody. Luckily for him he was already working on something else at the time and with a small loan he was able to finish it before the money completely dried up.

His bar was called the Sibete Imperiaum, a fancy bit of naming that he had enjoyed. The bar was in a some what out of the way corner of the city, not far off the highway, but away from the usual tourist destinations. It wasn't anything too special just a two story building with the bar on the bottom floor and a decent apartment above it with a staircase back behind the bar.

He had gone with the classic wood finish on everything, the heavy oak tables and chairs matching the highly polished bar top. He had a few TV's hanging in the corners playing various games, and a jukebox in the corner that played traditional vinyl, none of that digital crap.

He served a large selection of beer both on tap and bottle, a number of local IPAs and any other sort of drink he could get his hands on with the shipping crisis.

The bar paid for itself in those first few years and for a brief amount of time he didn't owe any one anything. His clientele wasn't more than he could handle, and he quickly had a few regulars who were here almost as often as he was. Word of mouth was his only real advertising and it worked out for him fairly well.

It was no Cheers, but it was his, and it was nice.

At least until a member of the Teeth heard about the place.

Some how almost overnight his place became a gang bar. His regulars fled to other places and his once quiet bar was filled with violent drunken bikers. For some reason the ascetic appealed to them, or the fact the bartender was a native American, Andrew didn't know why they liked his place, but he certainly wasn't going to try and remove them.

The cops didn't do anything, and since only the lower end members gathered here, no capes, the PRT didn't care either. He considered closing the bar or trying to leave town, though word of what happened to the last bartender of the gangs 'favorite bar' who tried that kept him in place.

It was not like he had any where else to go any way. At least the mid tier gang members covered outstanding tabs of the lower level mooks, seems even the Teeth understood if you didn't pay, the bar would shut down because it couldn't buy any more booze.

Right now his poor bar was packed full of the bikers. Every table filled, the bar filled and several of them were having a game where they threw knives at one of the wooden walls where a couple of promotional pictures of the local Protectorate capes had been taped to use as target practice, including Wards. A dull thunk and a curse followed by laughter showed one of the players had missed a new picture that had been put up.

Slayer had been in town for a while, though she was just now starting to annoy the higher ups of the Teeth as she and her projection had taken down Fangtooth.

The shaper was pretty mild by Teeth standards, though if he had enough time he could turn into a humanoid saber tooth tiger looking creature, with the strength, teeth, and claws to match.

He was barely above these guys in the Teeth hierarchy, but he was a cape which made him more important.

Another thrown dagger nicked the image of the wide hat of Slayer's projection, Alucard, to another series of curses and laughter.

The door to his bar was suddenly kicked in with a loud crash, the heavy oak door shoving one of the bikers who had been in the arc of it to the floor with a crash.

The action and the mans yell brought the entire bars attention to the door and the red clad form standing in the doorway with a smile on his face.

"A more retched hive of scum and villainy I've never seen... and I've been to Jersey."Alucard snarked.

"IT"S SLAYER!" one of the bikers shouted, and suddenly everyone in the bar had their guns out.

"Hmm. Tough crowd, "Maybe I should have said 'Avon calling?'"

Anything else that Alucard might have said was cut off as every biker in the bar opened fire at the man, the deafening roar of gunfire from at least three score of bikers unloading everything they had forced Andrew to drop behind the bar clutching his hands to his ears.

The shooting continued for a good two minutes of firing and reloading before some one shouting finally ended the gunfire with the last few pot shots.

With his ears still ringing Andrew peered up over the bar, noting the girl was hidden behind a table in the corner that had been over turned, her ears covered with her hands, and the door and archway of his bar were gone. The bar sign outside swung crazily from a single chain, the metal sign pitted with dents and holes, the heavy oaks door was splintered along with the door frame and the brick wall around it was pitted and chipped, several of the bricks knocked out completely.

Some how the bay window just a few feet away was still intact.

The brick dusk and drywall drifted down and what looked like a red dressed corpse lay just outside on the sidewalk.

There was silence a moment before a few of the bikers moves closer, guns pointed at the body.

There was a high tension as the mooks approached and a clenching of many assholes as one of the three that went forward kicked the boot of the corpse as if everyone expected something to happen.

"Is it really Slayer?"

"I dunno I've never seen the guy."

"I thought slayer was a chick?"

"Fuck if I know, check his wallet."

There was a loud click and the sound of coins falling into a slot, that brought the rest of the bare whirling to aim their weapons at the old jukebox as a record was slowly moved by the arm to be laid on the turntable, the needle scratching a little as it touched the spinning vinyl.

A song started to play a moment later , a jaunty tune that leaned heavily on the piano. Oddly the blonde woman was rubbing her temples in annoyance.

"You could never know what it's like,

Your blood like winter freezes just like ice,

and there's a cold and lonely light that shines from you

You'll wind up like the wreck you hide behind that mask you use..."

Several of the bars patrons looked around confused, a few of them glaring at the bartender as if pissed he would put a record by a gay man in the same machine as their southern rock and Aerosmith.

And did you think this fool could never win?

Well look at me , I'm coming back again

I got a taste of love in a simple way

And if you need to know while I'm still standing, you just fade away

"Who the fuck picked this song?" One of the bikers demanded.

"Wait, this ain't Slayer... this is Mitch!" one of the bikers by the body shouted.

"I'd just like to say, you guys have very tight pants in your uniforms, I could barely fit my dick in here." one of the bikers near the Jukebox stated, the black haired mans grin growing wider under his Red Sox ball cap.

The guns swung back to him though the man was already moving, his own guns whipped out as the gunfire began again, along with a great deal of screaming. Andrew caught a glimpse of the woman behind the overturned table tossing something at the back of the Teeth near her and drawing a handgun from her coat, before he dove under the bar for a second time.

Andrew lay flat against the disgusting rubber mat covering the floor behind the bar. He made a note to clean this if he survived The screaming and gunfire not quite enough to silence the strains of music still coming from the jukebox, nor the dark laughter coming from the mad man in the middle of it.

After what seemed like an hour but couldn't have been much more than two minutes given he could still hear the ending chorus from the song that had been playing, the last of the gun fire and screams trailed off. There were a few groans and some whimpering though nothing else.

Slowly Andrew moved slowly rising up to peek over the bar top.

Sitting at the bar was a dark haired man dressed in a red suit with a long red cloak and a wide brimmed hat, the same man who only a few moments before had been dressed like one of the Teeth.

Andrew glanced to the man who simply sat on the stool patiently with his fingers interlaced and his white gloved hands resting on the bar top. Behind him was the carnage of his bar with broken chairs and tables and bullet holes in everything, there were also several Teeth enveloped in a odd foam like ball cursing up a storm as the blonde woman in the biker leathers was kicking one of the foamed individuals in the fork between his legs.

"I told you to keep you damn hands to your self bastard." She growled offering another kick as the bound biker whimpered.

"Alucard you get to be the scout next time! Why did I even need to... FUCK! I fucking didn't even need to do it, you ASS!" Slayer snapped as she stomped on another biker's free hand. "Fucking gonna have nightmares about some of those damn suggestions."

"Ooh, I can do that next time. I look fabulous in a little red dress." the man at the bar offered.

Bodies of the Teeth were scattered everywhere. Many of them were still moving, some missing limbs, though Andrew noticed a surprising lack of blood. The woman continued to rant and moved around zip tying the ones with enough limbs left to tie together.

"Hey buddy, sorry about the mess, mind if I get a Unicorn Kiss cocktail?" Alucard questioned, the bar tender. "If you don't know how to make one, a mint julep would be fine."

"I'm still standing... yeah yeah yeah..."

[Boston 2006, May]

"Alright, you're set, lets see if your grouping is better now that we adjusted the sights." Emily offered, tapping the button to send the new paper silhouette back down range. "Ear protection on."

Amy rolled her eyes as only a ten year old could as she put on the blue ear protection, Emily put hers on as well. The girl picked up the Taurus .22 and put the second magazine in as Emily continued to reload the first.

Amy took her time and aimed down range at the target, her speed wasn't that good, but Emily had no intentions of letting Amy get in a spot where she would need to draw fast and aim. Amy wasn't that interested in shooting at first, especially with all the safety drills Emily put her through, though after a few trips to the range, she was quite happy to go.

Emily had gotten her a .22 automatic to practice with and had only just managed to avoid getting a pink Hello Kitty one for the girl.

Only because Alucard got to it first.

She didn't even know what he did with the crap he bought, or where he even got the money to buy anything, the PRT still listed him as a construct and only paid Slayer.

Emily watched the first shot tear into the paper target at thirty yards with a small nod as Amy adjusted.

Amy might be a bit slow when shooting, but she could put the bullets mostly where she wanted every time. Not quite her own level of course, but Emily didn't have three awards for hand gun marksmanship for nothing.

Boston had been a fairly nice change of pace for the last two years. Amy had settled into school fairly well, and she was even friendly with a couple of the Wards here and at the school she was in. Emily hadn't needed to say anything about who they were, Amy had figured out on her own.

Emily had then used how Amy figured it out to drill some new instructions into the Wards for hiding their identities.

Another shot met the small grouping Amy was making.

Emily herself was not settling in as well as Amy was. The local deputy director was a bit of a hard ass, but Emily hardly cared about that, despite how often the man wound up yelling at her about Alucard's actions. It was the other capes in the Protectorate here were the issue.

Emily knew a few of them personally.

A few of them were the ones who had left her team for dead in Ellisburg.

Emily didn't like to think she was petty, or had a vengeful streak, but given Bastion dumped all his paperwork onto her the moment she was assigned as his second, she used that to make the capes lives at work a living hell. Doubles shifts, the worst PR patrols, Ward babysitting, everything that she could to be a petty vindictive bitch and still be by the rules. They were always the ones assigned to meet and deal with the Youth Guard, they were signed up for any banal training classes she could find, and every single small slight or error in what they did was reported up the chain denying raises, promotions, and time off requests.

There were complaints of course, luckily most of the other Capes had no issue with her, some even liked Slayer and Alucard. Given Emily didn't argue about the paperwork Bastion dumped on her, Bastion didn't do anything about the complaints about her either.

Deputy Director Riekland used those complaints to yell at her more, but it was all by the rules so he couldn't do anything.

The PRT director might have had something to say about it, but Armstrong focused too much on researching Capes, and Slayer was seen as a very favorable as Alucard was willing to patrol parts of Boston that no other cape was willing to touch. As such a significant number of Teeth and one of their capes were in custody. There were a number of fatalities and maiming, though they were the Teeth and no one really seemed to care too much if they got fucked up, even the news media barely mentioned it.

As such the ones who were complaining about her were ignored by everyone who could do anything about it.

On the other side of that coin she was quite popular with the rank and file troopers, as unlike other capes she actually seemed to pay attention to them and didn't consider them expendable chaff in cape fights.

That led to unexpected privileges, like being able to take her daughter to the PRT range without anyone raising a fuss so long as she collected her own brass.

Emily blinked and shook her head a little as another few rounds hit the target. She wasn't sure when she had started thinking of Amy as her daughter, but the thought was locked in her mind.

She still wasn't sure on how Amy felt, though the girl seemed to be enjoying herself despite developing a rather snarky attitude thanks to Alucard. If the two of them got going Emily's best counter was to leave the room and let them work out the verbal slug fest.

A faint click sounded and Amy ejected the magazine and made sure the chamber was clear before putting on the safety and setting the gun down on the small table, tapping the button to bring the target back up to them.

Emily smiled as the paper got closer, the grouping was better than the first time, all center mass without any stragglers. She reached up to pull her ear protection down noting the smile on Amy's face at the improvement.

"Very good, don't get too cocky though, you did great with this one but you should be able to shoot this well consistently before you let your ego get too big." Emily offered.

"Hey, I'm just happy to have this good of grouping for once, and we did adjust the sight so the first round, wasn't even my fault." Amy protested.

Emily considered as she set down the reloaded magazine and picked up the empty one off the table idly loading it.

"Hmm true, alright, set up another target and lets see if you can do it again." Emily chuckled. "I'll let you know if your ego is justified."

"Alright, thanks mom." Amy started before freezing as she realized what she said. Emily froze as well. There was a moment of rather uncomfortable silence.

"I mean...uhhh." Amy started to say.

Emily took a moment more to process before she let out a small sigh. She had no idea how to deal with this, hell with it, all in.

"Was that a sarcastic slip of the tongue or did you mean that..." Emily asked leaning down to the smaller freckled girl, a small smile still on her face.

"I... well... you don't mind...?" Amy stammered." I mean ..."

"It's fine... Emily couldn't help smile setting down the magazine to actually hug the girl, something that Amy seemed to tense at, before accepting."I'm alright if you want to call me mom...Just don't tell Alucard or I'll never hear the end of it."

Amy giggled a little at that. "Alright, but I expect he's gonna find out."

"Yer damn right I will." Alucard said from just over Emily's shoulder. "It's too damn adorable!"

"GAH!" Amy shouted.

"Ahh shit." Emily grumbled as Alucard laughed.

3Chapter 9

There were times in Emily Piggot's life where she had to consider that at some point or another she had angered god.

She wasn't sure which one to be fair, as with the arrival of the Endbringers, a number of new gods were created to pray to, and a large number of older gods had come back into favor, just in case they were the ones responsible and were angry about their lack of proper deference. Hell even Pastafarians saw a resurgence.

With the fall of the Vatican, Catholic was about the only religion not commonly practiced as it had developed a bit of a stigma with the events of the holy war.

Granted to Emily none of this really mattered after all. All that really mattered was that one of them, at least, must be pissed with her.

It was this thought that filled her mind as her body smashed through the pane glass window, shattering it into a million deadly shards as she flew through it. Her costume did a fairly good job protecting her, with the winter in full swing here in Boston the long coat she wore, modeled after the police issue winter coats, held up to the punishment. Unfortunately aside from her goggles her face was uncovered and she received a multitude of little cuts from the shattered glass all of them starting to bleed almost before she hit the ground.

The impact was not pleasant, neither with the window, nor the floor, nor the several school desks she hit as she slid, and the less said about what it was that hit her to send her flying the better.

Her armor did a little to protect her from the impacts, though she was certainly going to feel it for a while.

She shook her head sitting up looking back to the way she came in with a curse. Movement behind her along with a few whimpers drew her attention to the small crowd of children and a teacher behind her, her eyes darting over them before they settled on one freckled dark haired girl who was staring back at her.

"Shit." Slayer muttered seeing Amy among the school kids who were sheltering in the room she had crashed into.

Since Slayer and Alucard's arrival in Boston, after a short time of settling in, the pair of them had started going after the Teeth, hitting them hard and fast. As the most dangerous group in the city Slayer's goal had been to knock them down as much as she could and as fast as she could to prevent recovery or knowing where the pair were going to be hit next. It wasn't uncommon for one of her patrols to end with a small group of the bikers behind bars or in traction. There were a few deaths of course, but it was never an innocent and her superiors in the Protectorate and PRT considered it acceptable.

The Teeth on the other hand, did not think that.

The leader of the Teeth, a para human called 'The Butcher' had supposedly sworn to take her head himself.

No one really consider that the rumor was true as the Butcher was known not to care about any of those under him. If they were weak enough to get caught, they were of no use.

Evidently that was the former Butcher. He had been killed three to four days ago. The woman who took his place was very much the sort to take things personally if her new gang started to lose people.

She was also the sort that gave no shits about the Rules.

The alerts had come in one after another from all over the city. The Butcher had evidently called for the Teeth to burn the city to the ground as they were attacking everywhere, banks, markets, gas stations, city buildings, Fenway Park. The Police PRT and every heroic cape in the city minus the wards was out trying to deal with the riot and the mess scattered all around Boston.

What was found out by Slayer and Alucard later however, was that the Butcher had one target in mind.

Lilla G Frederick middle school.

Some member of the gang had noticed a woman who bore a striking resemblance to Slayer and a man who looked like Alucard tended to drop a young girl off at the school nearly every day. And that same freckled brown haired girl was spotted quite often at the Protectorate building.

It wouldn't have taken a genius to put two and two together.

With that information the Butcher set some mooks to attack the place while she and some of the other para human Teeth members hung back to wait

Slayer and Alucard had just finished rounding up some gang members trying to rob a bank when the call came in. She rushed to the school without any consideration that it was a trap.

Lilla G Frederick was a fairly large middle school, with a high school perhaps two streets down that most of the Wards went to. Both schools were with insight of one another across a series of parking lots and a school sports arena. As with a number of schools in the area, an Endbringer shelter was built underneath and the standard practice was to have the students retreat into it for any sort outside emergency.

Still with the gang members roaming the halls and trashing the place and with the Teeth's para humans gathered outside, not everyone could get into the shelter.

While Slayer had not seen any bodies, she had no doubt that the Teeth didn't give a shit about the kids and there was going to be a lot of casualties if they were not dealt with quickly.

Unfortunately the Teeth jumped them as soon as the PRT car Slayer was driving pulled up.

Pushing herself to her feet Slayer drew her side arm firing three shots back out the shattered window. There were several meaty impacts and a laugh.

"I told you before bitch, that little popgun of yours don't mean shit to me!"

A large muscled figure in black leather and numerous metal spikes stepped over the sil and approached Slayer.

The Teeth cape called himself Feral. A large man of possible Hispanic origin who had a minor Alexandria package, hitting brute 3or 4 at least, coupled with near invulnerability.

A surveillance camera had once recorded him staggering out of a bar drunk off his ass and walking into traffic one night. He was hit with a box truck and flung across the street into the side of a parked car, totaling it.

The driver not knowing who he hit got out to see if he could help and was killed for his efforts. Feral then proceeded to rip apart the truck itself in a drunk rage with out showing any sign of injury.

Slayer was not liking her odds.

Behind him, outside the window in the front court yard, she could see Alucard fighting the other capes, including the Butcher herself. A rather small woman, with a muscular build not far off Slayers, was raving and screaming as she fired a pair of large machine guns akimbo at Alucard, teleporting away as he got to close to keep shooting. She didn't seem to care if she hit her own people either, most of whom seemed to be brute enough to take it, though the school building itself was being peppered with the stray rounds..

Back up was t coming, but the chaos around the city would slow that, this was not a good day.

"Get them out of here." Slayer hissed to the teacher before she started walking to the other side of the classroom away from the door, firing several more rounds into the face of the cape that came in to keep his focus on her.

Feral glanced to the kids with no real interest as the teacher managed to get the door open and urge them outside as she held it open.

'Stupid cunt, your bullets can't hurt me." Feral barked out, grabbing one of the desks and flinging it to the side at the kids. The teacher moved quick enough to push the boy the desk was going to hit out of the way, though she took the brunt of the thrown desk and crashed back against the wall collapsing in a heap with the children still in the room screaming and rushing towards the door to get away.

Amy stopped and tried to drag the corpulent woman out the door with the help of the boy who the teacher saved. The pair of them managing to get most of the large teacher out of the door, though her weight was causing the pair a problem.

Emily cursed, and moved quickly back between the kids and the cape, ejecting her empty magazine and shoving another in before continuing to fire. She reached into her coat for a containment grenade. She really should have lead with that.

"I told you that doesn't do shit!" The cape roared out, he surged forward and swung his fist up slamming it into Slayers belly hard enough that Slayer was pretty sure he had punched her spine. The vomit of blood and bile that burst from her mouth and nose at the impact was a sure sign of something wrong as well.

What ever god had it out for her, really really didn't want her to have any working kidneys it seemed. A second punch came across her face shattering her jaw and adding more blood to the mass already filling her mouth. Her goggles were knocked from her head as her body was sent flying back to crash against the door with a sick thud likely crushing the teachers legs and forcing Amy to fall back with a scream as Emily landed limply before her.

"You are an annoying thing aren't you." Alucard sighed, yanking one of the capes in front of the next round of gunfire from the teleporting woman.

Out of the six that started this fight, not including the Butcher herself, two were dead, killed by their own leader, and the others were either annoyed or injured. Alucard was getting tired of playing with them.

"WHY WON"T YOU FUCKING DIE!" Butcher screamed out practically frothing at the mouth. "I put more damn lead in you than a pencil how are you still alive!?"

"Clean living I guess?" Alucard smirked. "Now how about you back off. Kids have enough issues in their pubescent years with out you adding violence to their hair in strange places and squeaky voices."

Butcher might have responded, though a scream snapped Alucard's gaze to the ruined side of the building Emily had been tossed through. His red gaze fell on the battered form of Emily and Amy staring at the body screaming.

Butcher grinned."Well that's one problem down."

Alucard whipped his gaze back to the Butcher, ripping the cape he had been using as a shield in half , his blood flowing into the red cloaked form as Alucard's mouth widened with a growl.

"You dun goofed." Alucard snarled.

The fuck mothering vampire then stopped and stared as all the people he had been fighting suddenly stopped and collapsed to the ground in a dead faint.

"What the fuck...? I know I'm scary but I've never had a mass fainting before." Alucard questioned sniffing the air as he looked at the collapsed figures then over at Amy and Emily, the former who had her hands on Emily's side and was starting into nothing, as even the Teeth member that had taken out Slayer had fainted.

Alucard stared a moment then looked to the fore head of the Butcher who was on her back twitching, watching the odd blood flow and energy.

"OOOOOOOOOHHHH, so that's what I've been missing." Alucard snapped his fingers.

Emily woke with a start, jerking hard as she looked around as she reached up to wipe the blood from her eyes. She turned her head staring at the mess that was her uniform and the floor around her.

She took in her surroundings noticing Amy was unconscious laying against her hip. Both of them were covered in blood, and Emily felt like she could tackle a buffet with enough force to put a restaurant out of business.

A curse snapped her attention to Feral who was pushing himself back up to his knees shaking his head.

Emily remember what happened and quickly looked down checking herself , feeling no different than she had when she got up this morning despite the faint nausea of being soaked in her own blood. Her hand ran up to her face feeling none of the stinging wounds that had come from the glass. She blinked and moved quickly opening the door to push Amy and the teachers legs all the way through, the boy was still pulling trying to drag the woman further into the hall. He glanced to her his eyes wide in panic but he didn't stop what he was doing. Emily smiled, if she survived this she would see that the kid got a medal or something. For persistence if nothing else.

Feral stood up as did Emily, she had to buy time now, she had no idea what happened, but she was well aware of what was in front of her.

The brute swore again and saw Emily standing . The fuck bitch, I put my fist through your ass."

"I've been hit harder by a stray breeze." Slayer snarked glancing around for her gun, before slipping her hand into her coat. She had four of the foam grenades, hopefully this would work on the brute.

Emily swore as Feral lashed out, not having expected him to move that fast, her training kicked in and she brought her arm up expecting to have it shatter or ripped out of her shoulder.

Both of them froze as his wild hay maker struck her arm and stopped. Feral stared at her arm, as did she. She felt it, and it was going to bruise but the impact was barely above what she experienced in her normal training.

"The FUCK?"Feral demanded.

" Well. I don't know what's going on, but this changes things." Emily stated, whipping her hand from her coat and back handing the para human with her fist around the grenade. Feral rocked back from the blow nearly knocked off his feet.

Emily blinked and looked at her hand as Feral spat out a tooth still swearing.

Fuck it, she could figure out what was going on later, right now she had a job to do and she was going to enjoy it.

Emily smiled as she started to take the man apart.

Feral was a brawler, most brutes were, they didn't have to be skilled with a punch would crack a skull and they could ignore most counter attacks.

PRT agents however had no such resistance and were highly trained in a mix of martial arts , most of them designed to take down people larger and stronger than them. A skilled enough agent could take down a low to mid tier brute if things went properly, they rarely did. Still her Maori instructor had called the training 'Kotahi te ua ka heke te maunga.' Which translated to something like' One rain drop can bring down the mountain.

The best part about the style however, was it worked very well when the playing field was even too.

Popping the pin on the grenade she tossed it in the mans lap as he lay groaning on the tile floor. She let the foam form and cover his legs and dropped a second grenade on his chest, binding his limbs to the floor . She dropped the third and encased him in a larger glut of foam just to be sure.

With that out of the way she moved back to the door yanking it open to check on Amy in the hall.

Outside she was surprised to see a trio of paramedics flanked by two BPD who quickly pointed her guns at her. She kept her hands visable as one of the paramedics noticed who she was.

"Slayer? Are you alright ma'am?" The man winced as one of his partners checked the teacher on the gurney. The third man was checking on Amy who was on another cart witht he boy standing next to it.

"I'm fine. What's the situation?"Slayer questioned.

"I expect we should ask you miss." One of the officers stated." Your, umm, I mean Alucard is outside with a number of bodies of Teeth capes."

"I meant with A... the girl and the teacher?" Slayer swallowed.

"Miss Andrews here doesn't look that good, but i expect she'll make it, i've seen worse." One of the medics offered. "The girl is Amy Piggot. Despite the blood as far as we can tell she's just fainted. No sign of any injurey though we're going to take her in just to be safe. Are you sure you are alright ma'am, your covered in blood too."

" Not mine. Thank you. " Slayer lied and nodded turning her head back as Feral started swearing behind her, clearly she hadn't hit him hard enough, though at the moment she was starting to feel very tired. "I need to deal with this. Make sure there's no one else hiding any where would you?"

"Of course ma'am though it looks like you and your partner have already wrapped everything up here." One of the officers nodded. " Is everything alright in there?"

"Just cleaning up, he's a brute, I need to make sure he stays foamed. Thank you again,." Slayer stated stepping away from the door and letting it close before she fell back against the blood splattered stone fighting off a wave of exhaustion that was hitting her, barely remaining standing.

"You alright?"

Slayer opened her eyes to see Alucard standing there. The vampire ran a gloved finger across her blood covered fore head before licking it clean with a grin.

"Still delicious."

"Took your sweet time." Slayer growled.

"Sorry but i was trying to keep six murderers from going off on a bunch of school kids like a fat kid on a plate of cupcakes. I figured you could handle one." Alucard scoffed.

"Amy was in here."

"Which is why i stopped playing with them." Alucard said rather somberly.

"Something weird happened and I need about a dozen pizzas and to sleep for a week." Slayer muttered with a wince.

"I did see something a little odd. Always exciting to witness something I've never seen before."Alucard smiled.

"You fucking bitch!" Feral screamed." I'm gonna fucking end you, you hear me! I'm gonna rip you apart and rape your corpse... no I'm gonna tear off your limbs and make you watch as i kill that little bitch you were protecting then I'm gonna rape her corpse then yours."

"Imaginative isn't he?" Alucard stared down at the foamed para human.

"I got your face, i got her face, i know who you fucking are and I'll come and find you . You're fucked!" Feral snarled.

Slayer stared at the man lifting her head as he went on about digging up her mother to rape her too. Slayer scanned the room and out side the broken window seeing no cameras or any one looking.

"How exciting. Question for you though." Slayer offered reaching into her coat with a faint pinging sound. "How's your gag reflex?"

"What the fuck are you talking about you Bitgrrrumaph!"

Alucard raised and eyebrow as Slayer dropped to one knee next to Feral's head, ramming her last foam grenade canister in his wide open and screaming mouth before pushing back up to her feat as the canister went off.

One could breath through the foam, for the most part, though there could be issues if it was used wrong. Emily remembered that training

Walking away from the para human as the hiss of the foam being deployed drown out the sound of him choking and drowning on his own vomit, she retrieved her gun and goggles, and sat down on a desk with a wince to wait for her back up as Alucard laughed.

3Chapter 10

Emily Piggot, aka Slayer, had had better days. It had barely been a week since the attack by the Teeth on the school. Everything still hurt, and she looked like one big walking bruise, thankfully aside from some visible marks around her neck, her uniform covered most of the marks. The doctors said she seemed to have pulled every muscle in her entire body. The closest they had seen to that level of injury was when an athlete over exerted themselves, but never to the level that Slayer had undergone. She had also been diagnosed with sever dehydration and malnourishment. She had also lost every scrap of fat on her body.

Alucard bemoaned the fact her boobs shrank for days.

Amy was being quiet and reclusive, not willing to say anything to her, though she had spent a length of time hugging her when she was discharged from the hospital.

Alucard was rather quiet as well, and was spending most of his time with Amy. The annoying bastard wouldn't say much about what Amy had told him, but Emily trusted the man enough that if it was serious he would tell her. Emily had a good idea on what had happened, as several of the PRT teams that investigated were asking questions about Amy.

Emily wasn't sure what would happen if it came out that her daughter actually had triggered. And right now she had enough on her plate to deal with. Though upon reflection, aside from planning to get her some therapy if she needed it, Emily couldn't say her attitude towards Amy had changed at all.

Right now however she was in an overdue briefing in her Slayer costume, with Director Armstrong, Deputy Director Riekland, and Bastion.

She got along with Director Armstrong as well as anyone. The man cared more about studying powers than actually doing his job, but he was at least level headed when it was required.

Bastion was more concerned with his own image than anything else, but he wasn't a bad hero overall, just a barely hidden bigot.

Deputy Director Riekland on the other hand was a hard case and an asshole. He didn't seem to like parahumans in general. Sadly he was someone that she felt she might have become had the bullshit with Nilbog had turned out differently. She still didn't like parahumans in general, though that ire was focused on some and nonexistent with others she had met.

The man's attitude however was made worse given that it was Slayer he was focused on being an asshole to right now.

"Sixteen people dead, a hundred and thirty four injuries requiring hospitalization, countless other minor injuries, millions in property damage and that's just the civilian side." Riekland snapped. "Six of our agents are dead and three times that are on medical leave, and the amount of damage done to our equipment is going to put us over budget for years."

"Including you, we had several injuries to our capes as well." Bastion added. "Still we have most of the Teeth in custody and their leadership is finished. I'm rather impressed at how far the trade off is in our favor to be honest."

"I'm not." Riekland snapped. "The school alone had a dozen dead gang members and seven dead capes. Six of them including the new Butcher were torn apart or turned into shriveled husks out in the main yard of the school in full view of the press and any one with a desire to even look for several hours until we managed to get a clean up crew there. The one possible survivor to all that was found foamed with a grenade stuffed into his mouth, forcing the man to choke to death on his own vomit!"

"Couldn't have happened to a nicer beaner." Bastion muttered to himself getting a glare from Riekland.

"Accidents happen." Emily sighed. She was regretting losing her temper a little, though not enough to interrupt her sleep. Particularly when Feral would have had no issue if the situations were reversed.

"Grenades covered in your blood do not 'accidentally' shove themselves into some ones mouth." Riekland snapped. "And I seriously want to know about what the hell happened to all those other people who were killed. Teeth or not none of them had a kill order."

"Butcher did." Armstrong pointed out, speaking for the first time since he greeted Slayer.

"This Butcher did not have anything of the sort just yet." Riekland snapped back. "I know it's bullshit , but the law doesn't take parahuman nonsense into account when it comes to who gets a kill order or not. The order is not on the power but the person wielding it."

"A technicality as most of us know how that power worked thanks to Gray Hawk before he was driven insane by the power and was killed by the next one to inherent the Butcher." Armstrong offered. "Though at the moment we are unsure as to where such power might be. There have been no signs of it in you and our thinkers can't get a handle on Alucard at all, Also Alucard's only response when questioned was to burp rather loudly."

"He does things like that." Slayer sighed.

"Never the less what are we going to tell the public about this?"Riekland grumbled.

"How about, Slayer heroically ends a major threat yet again?" Bastion smirked. Slayer for a moment couldn't help be appreciative of the man. He had his faults but he did try.

"How about not. This is ridiculous. This only happened because of your single minded pursuit of the Teeth Slayer! If you had left well enough along none of those people would be dead and none of the injuries would have happened!" Riekland accused.

"Until the Teeth went on another of their rides you mean." Bastion snapped." How many did we lose last time they did that, nearly as many as we did this time, and now there won't be a next time."

"It doesn't matter what happened last time, what happened this time already has people up in arms. The media has film of all those corpses in front of the school." Riekland snapped. "Some one has to be held accountable for that!"

"Good luck finding an unbiased jury, let alone a judge in this town who would join or oversee any sort of legal repercussions." Bastion laughed. "The Teeth are, well were, a well known group of thieves and murderers. The Mayors already talking about giving Slayer the key to the city for ending those shits."

"I have to agree that right now it's a good thing PR wise, but that many bodies is going to have to be explained at some point. "Armstrong sighed. "We need to set something up to show that we are investigating it and if pressed we may need to make some sort of gesture to show that the parties involved are being punished for their actions. This is a violation of the Rules in some respects."

"The Teeth started it by attacking the school several children of PRT employees are enrolled there." Bastion offered." That they were put down like rabid dogs like that to protect kids isn't going to have any other parahuman group think twice about the why. Hell the Youth Guard is probably going to invite slayer to one of their charity things for an award or whatever bullshit they do when not harassing us."

"Rather optimistic of you." Riekland frowned. "Though moving on, there is also the matter of Amy Piggot."

Slayer's eyes narrowed behind her goggles.

"There is no doubt that she triggered, while there was no camera in the school room, the ones outside showed the collapse of all the parahumans. Something that is a documented event when there is a trigger. Odd that Alucard remained standing enough to take advantage of the situation to deal with them. Though he has shown a great deal of independent action for a projection." Armstrong offered."Still, we checked over Miss Thompson, as well as Brian Lockheed. Neither of them have a Corona Pollentia. Amy Piggot however, does.."

"I never gave permission for that test." Slayer frowned.

"In the case of a suspected trigger, parental permission is not required."Riekland stated. "We need to have her tested and see if she's a fit for the Wards."

"Judging from what young mister Lockheed said it's likely she has a healing ability of some kind. This is further backed up by the tests run on Slayer that show all the old damage documented from the events in Ellisburg has been healed. It does not explain the bruising however, but it hints at the dehydration and starvation effect if the healing required all the extra body mass in order to repair the injuries. There's barely even any scar tissue." Armstrong regaled. "It's astounding."

"A healer... that will be a great help." Bastion offered. "Not to mention a great PR boost if we loan her out to the local hospitals."

The trio continued to talk, as if planning out Amy's entire life in the Wards. It was if they had not just been reprimanding Slayer for the deaths of the Teeth moments before, hinting they might throw her under the bus to save their own reputation. Now they were planning to use her daughter to boost their favor in the public eye. And they were completely ignoring her own opinion on what to do with Amy, despite the fact she was right in front of them.

Slayer closed her eyes and let out a long breath. Enough was enough.

"No."

"Hmmm? What was that?" Armstrong looked across the table to Slayer, pausing briefly in his suggestions for fields of study with Amy's powers.

"Amy is not going to come in for power testing, nor am I going to allow her into the Wards." Slayer stated simply. "I refuse to force her to deal with all this super hero bull shit like I have. She's already had too much shit happen to her in her young life and I'm not going to add to it by letting you parade her around like a new toy for show and tell. "

"She's a potentially powerful new trigger, you can't just..." Riekland started.

"Yes I can. And I am. " Slayer stated." Amy is not going to be your latest media darling. Having been that myself for several years now, I'm not going to have her deal with that fucking circus."

"As a member of the Protectorate you have a duty to bring new triggers into protectorate custody so that they can be properly trained and use their powers for the benefit of people..." Riekland snapped.

"You mean as a benefit for the PR machine. Besides I have a counter for that 'duty ' bullshit." Slayer stated. "I quit."

"WHAT!?" all three of the men demanded.

"Don't you fucking WHAT me. You're talking about what to do with my daughter in front of me like I wasn't even in the room, you've implied I'm going to have to beg forgiveness or what ever for taking out some fucking monsters. Meanwhile Amy has pretty much drawn back into herself so far that she's probably worse than she was when I first got her."Slayer growled.

"She's not your daughter." Riekland snapped.

"She's more my daughter than you're my boss." Slayer snapped yanking off the goggles and throwing them across the table at Riekland

"There are rules and procedures a cape of your standing cannot simply leave like a disgruntled employee." Armstrong offered.

"Yeah here's the fucking thing. I'm not a cape. Look at my fucking medical reports, I don't have a Corona Pollentia. I played along with this bullshit because I was a good and loyal trooper following orders.

I've had my guts torn out of me twice in the line of duty, I'm pretty sure I felt my rib cage shatter, I've been shot and stabbed numerous times and forced to adopt the daughter of a super villain all on orders.

I've been to Endbringer fights and shot at fucking Behemoth with a fucking standard issue rifle because that's all I had. I am a normal human that's been spun into some stupid god tier hero bullshit because of fuckers like you.

And now, now that I've come to accept all that, that I have a daughter now, that I'm considered a cape, that I'm fully healed for the first time in years, you fuckers want me to grovel before the public to beg forgiveness for destroying monsters that preyed upon the very ones who I'm supposed to be forgiven by? If that was it fine I'll suck it up and do it, but now you want to drag Amy into this pissant little popularity contest of yours? Fuck that and fuck you. I quit." Emily ranted.

"And you're going to roll over and accept it or the first news media that asks will get told exactly what happened here. Let's see your PR machine recover from that shit!"

"You signed the NDAs . You say a word and we will bury you."Riekland ground his teeth.

"Yeah I did." Emily smirked. "But Alucard hasn't signed shit, nor has he ever been paid because you listed him as a projection and ignored him despite what I've been telling everyone for years."

The trio's eyes widened at that revelation as Emily Piggot turned and stormed out of the room flipping the trio off as she walked out.

"I expect my last check and his back pay to be in the mail before the end of the week along with all unused vacation time, hazard pay, and overtime. Or else."

Emily called as the door slammed behind her.

3Chapter 11

The crash of the waves, the sent of salt in the air, and the distant call of the gulls lulled Emily into a sense of comfort. One that she jolted out of on her own when she felt herself relaxing too much, only to find there was still nothing wrong.

It was still the early spring of 2010 but unlike how things were up north, here it was actually pushing eighty already, and if not for the breeze from the water, the humidity would have made it feel twice that.

Emily lifted her head looking around taking note that Amy and Alucard were both down by the water trying to build a sand castle. Amy was in a simple teal one piece, while she thankfully hadn't developed enough yet at 14 to draw any attention to herself any one looking twice would see that she was surprisingly well muscled for her age. Amy had decided to join Emily in her morning runs and exercises when she was still emotionally scared and didn't want Emily out of her sight for long.

She regretted it of course, but the younger girl persisted and could mostly keep up with her now. She was also doing fairly well in school and was leading a for lack of a better term, normal, life.

Alucard was... well right now he was a pale little girl with long black hair in a swimsuit that might have been popular in the 20s. That made no sense what so ever to Emily or Amy, but neither of them mentioned when he did weird shit any more, it only encouraged him, or her, whatever.

Emily relaxed again leaning back on the beach chair the pile of things next to her being partially guarded by her presence. While several of the other beach goers gave her bikini clad form appreciative looks, due to her own toned form and the small silver two piece she wore, most averted their eyes when they noticed the 1911 holstered on her thigh, the straps of it likely having more material than the rest of her suit.

She would have to clean her weapon heavily later, but she never went any where with out it. A 'supply error' from the PRT arms-master back in Boston had allowed her to legally keep the gun, despite it being PRT kit that should have been returned.

Her departure gained her a number of small favors from the friends in the lower ranks of the PRT she had made, including a going away party from the Wards. She was also given a line on a property for sale in a little town called Litchfield South Carolina, just south of where Myrtle Beach used to be. Evidently the trooper that tipped her off had a cousin trying to sell the place, one weekend trip later and she had bought it, a little two story house about a mile from the water.

Between Amy's therapy and the house Emily was still fairly well off , the PRT continued to pay her for likeness rights for Slayer as after the destruction of the Teeth, products with her and Alucard's likeness were in high demand, even years later.

Not that everything had been rosy, Amy didn't like therapy but she stuck it out, complaining most of the time. The Endbringers continued to be assholes too. The east coast had been ravaged by waves when Newfoundland sunk and there were still signs of damage to buildings along the coast even this far south from it. Thankfully their neighborhood had not been hit with anything worse than a flooded street or two and minor structure damage.

Leviathan was rapidly being considered the most dangerous of the Endbringers.

While the Simurgh caused the Holy War, she was far easier to drive off than before. However Legend himself had asked Alucard to not join any more of the fights with her, as when he was there the Simurgh tended to attack from as long of range as she could, sometimes not even leaving orbit to do so, and as such caused far more damage with less capes being able to get to her.

Behemoth still had the highest cape kill count over all, but other wise had been driven off far faster than any other, though everyone was still confused at the lack of bodies after fights with him.

Alucard claimed to know nothing about it.

Leviathan however had sank Kyushu and Newfoundland, and in between those two disasters had shown up during hurricane season and drove a category 5 storm into the east coast.

The target at the time seemed to have been the Marine core base, Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, as that's where the storm had finally stopped with Leviathan in the eye for two days.

The fight had not gone well for the capes present and the hours of max winds coupled with the powers of Leviathan had reduced much of the state to rubble flattening buildings trees and anything else in a swath of land that covered almost to Charlotte and caused a loss of life almost on par with the sinking of Newfoundland. Even now the east coast of North Carolina was mostly underwater as the swamps and rivers had swollen up and taken over what little high ground was on the coast. South Carolina and Virginia were hardly spared, but their damage was far less than what had happened in NC.

In fact it might have been the recovery efforts and protections set into place because of that event that saved so much of the coast from the tidal waves that followed the loss of Newfoundland.

Where everyone had once feared the Simurgh, Leviathin was now far more feared by anyone living near water.

Emily was pulled out of her thoughts as a shadow fell over her. She sighed wondering what sort of trite pickup line this person was going to use. Despite her breasts never having grown back to the size they were prior to her involuntary starvation, she was still considered quite attractive by most peoples standards and had turned down quite a few offers from both men and women. She just didn't see the appeal of dating and found she had no interest in anyone of either gender. She had spent all her early life focused on her carrier, then she had spent far too much of her time as Slayer, then she had gotten Amy and focused more on her. Now that she had time to pursue things like her own romantic life, she found she didn't have any interest. Sure she could tell when someone was beautiful or cute or whatever, but to her it felt the same way as looking at a pretty car, or a cute dog, something to take note of, then move on with your life.

She opened her eyes behind her sunglasses and frowned.

The Hispanic woman standing before her had long black hair done up in a tight bun and wore a very smart looking business suit. She was not some one Emily expected to see after this long. A glance to the side showed a few PRT Guards standing at the walk way that lead to the beach.

Amy and Alucard also seemed to take note of the women, though neither seemed inclined to do anything about it.

"So. " Emily asked." Are you here to personally deliver Alucard's back pay Miss Brown?"

Costa Brown sighed and shook her head a little looking down at Emily a small smirk on her face.

"Not as of such I'm afraid. Finance is being it's usual difficult self, I'm afraid what we've already given him took more effort than any one expected, though I still have people working on it."

"So then what do I owe the pleasure of this visit?" Emily asked not bothering to sit up. " And can you move a little you are in my sun."

Costa Brown blinked a little, not used to any one being that dismissive of her, though she did move to the side, only to back peddle quickly as a large green furred head lifted up from the pile of beach blankets and the cooler on the other side of Emily's chair.

The feline was the size of a tiger, with brilliant green fur that allowed it to look like the same said bright colored towels it had curled up on. Mulberry colored stripes ran down it's form and long pointed ears that looked like they would be more at home on a lynx than a tiger graced it's head. Purple eyes regarded Costa as it sniffed the air and offered a low growl as it stared at her.

Emily reached out putting her hand atop the cat's head stroking between it's ears until the growl turned into a purr and it laid back down after a quick nuzzle against Emily's hand.

"What the fuck is that?" Costa stared.

"SHE, is called Apocalypse Meow, or Pocky for short." Emily offered. "And before you even ask she has been registered and spayed and is Amy's little kitty.

"That's little?" Costa frowned as Emily chuckled.

"Didn't you read the report from Clemson? I took Amy out there for testing and they told me they were required by law to send the information to the PRT." Amy tested as a Bio-tinker specialized in Healing and what they called 'upgrades'. " Emily explained as if this wasn't the first time." Local branch knows my rep and figures if any one can keep a bio-tinker contained it's me. Still it's been two years since we had that test done."

"Contrary to what you might think Emily, not everything reaches the top." Costa huffed. "Hence how I only heard of you quitting because of an episode of the Martha Stewart show."

"That's been quite a while too."

"It was decided not to try and stop you from leaving. Boston fucked up. Armstrong has been reprimanded and both Riekland and Bastion were demoted with Riekland moved to another department." Costa stated. "The way they handled that situation was ham fisted at best. As for why I'm here now, I have a job offer."

"I quit remember." Emily frowned.

"Indeed you did, and looking back making you a cape to cover for Alucard's... well Alucardness was a mistake." Costa stated. "I'm not looking for you to return to the Slayer persona, but a position has opened that I feel you will be a good fit for."

"Why would I? I've got enough money to stay retired and do nothing but kick back on the beach for the next couple of decades at least, and that's not counting what Alucard is owed. Did you know he knows the Queen of England, she offered to buy us tickets to move out there and take over a old castle Princess Diana owns." Emily waved her hand in the air. "Personally I think he wants to go after the Furies, he's a little bored here."

"And so are you it seems, you're teaching three self defense courses, training marksmanship at the local PD, doing a bit of bounty hunting, and working as a volunteer fireman." Costa smirked.

"Woman has to have her hobbies."

"Look, will you at least listen to the offer?"

"I've not stopped you yet." Emily shrugged.

"Right. Look, your work as Slayer aside, you were one of the top officers in the S.O.T. unit, your work as just a normal officer was exemplary, and your marks from training were some of the highest of your year. As Slayer you handled the public and the paperwork perfectly."

"Flattery is not going to get you into my pants."

"...What?"

"Sorry I've been hanging around Alucard too long. Continue." Emily sighed.

"To put it simply I'm offering you a position as a director of a PRT division." Costa stated.

"What?"

"There's still some training you would need to undertake if you accept, but your name came up on a very short list I had when the position came open."

"What happened to the previous director?"

"Heart attack. She was never in the best of health when she took the position, but she was competent enough." Costa sighed.

"Huh... so do you really want me or do you just want Alucard back and Amy in your program?"

"I would be lying if I said it was just you, but given the position you would have final say on how things would be done would be yours. The only person you would ultimately answer to is me and those higher than me in the government of course, but I plan to be very hands off unless something egregious happens."

Emily looked over at Alucard. Costa followed her gaze and briefly wondered who Amy's friend was.

"The pay is very competitive, plus we would be able to supply Alucard with the blood packets his abilities seem to require and if Amy does not wish to join the Wards there are still several hospitals and Veterinary clinics she could work in much like she does here."

"See now you are trying to bribe me."

"Is it working?"

"Maybe... I can't deny you are right, I'm not exactly enjoying retirement, but it depends on what Amy and Alucard say. I don't want her any where near the Wards but she's old enough to choose just as she was old enough to decide she was going to help at the hospitals and vets." Emily grumbled. " I'm still not happy with how things went down however."

"That's all I could hope for." Costa smiled offering a business card to Emily.

"Just out of curiosity, where would I be in charge of?" Emily questioned.

"ENE." Costa stated. "Brockton Bay
