Chapter 38 - Chapter 38: The Name That Was Stolen‎.

‎Rain fell without sound.

‎Not a single drop echoed against the palace roof.

‎It was as if the storm itself was holding its breath.

‎The throne room had emptied, but no one had slept.

‎Vivi stood before the great map of the kingdom.

‎Three more villages had disappeared before dawn.

‎Not burned.

‎Not conquered.

‎Erased.

‎Whole pieces of the kingdom simply... no longer existed.

‎Haken entered quietly.

‎"The scouts returned."

‎She turned hopefully.

‎"They found something?"

‎He nodded once.

‎"A trail."

‎"Human."

‎"But it doesn't stay human for long."

‎Outside the palace walls...

‎The trail led into the Dead Marshes.

‎Fog clung to the earth like living fingers.

‎Every footprint ended the same way—

‎One step.

‎Two.

‎Three.

‎Then...

‎Crow feathers.

‎Thousands of them.

‎"The Crow Pact," Vivi whispered.

‎"They're moving openly now."

‎Haken knelt beside one feather.

‎"It's warm."

‎"They're close."

‎Deep inside the marsh...

‎An abandoned chapel emerged from the mist.

‎Its stained-glass windows had turned black.

‎Its bell hung upside down.

‎Above the entrance...

‎Someone had carved three words.

‎Names become chains.

‎Vivi felt the Crown grow hot.

‎"Haken..."

‎"This place knows me."

‎The doors opened by themselves.

‎Inside...

‎Candles burned with black flames.

‎Ancient books floated through the air.

‎At the center of the chapel stood a stone pedestal.

‎Resting upon it...

‎A single page.

‎Torn from the Book of First Names.

‎Vivi reached toward it.

‎Haken grabbed her wrist.

‎"Wait."

‎The page moved.

‎Letters crawled across the parchment like living insects.

‎Then words appeared.

‎Only the forgotten may enter.

‎The room trembled.

‎The candles went out.

‎One by one...

‎The shadows stood.

‎Not ghosts.

‎Not monsters.

‎People.

‎Transparent figures dressed in clothing from forgotten centuries.

‎Kings.

‎Queens.

‎Knights.

‎Children.

‎Each one had the same empty expression.

‎Each one had lost their name.

‎One spirit stepped forward.

‎Its face blurred, as though memory itself had abandoned it.

‎"You seek your name..."

‎"...but names cannot be stolen."

‎Vivi frowned.

‎"What do you mean?"

‎"They can only..."

‎The spirit raised a shaking hand.

‎"...be given away."

‎Silence.

‎Haken slowly looked toward Vivi.

‎"You never gave your name away."

‎The spirit's hollow eyes turned toward him.

‎"No."

‎"She didn't."

‎"You did."

‎Haken froze.

‎His heartbeat thundered.

‎"What...?"

‎The spirit lifted its hand again.

‎A memory unfolded around them.

‎Not a vision.

‎A truth.

‎Years ago...

‎A young Haken knelt beneath a full moon.

‎His curse had just awakened.

‎He was barely more than a frightened boy.

‎In his arms...

‎A little girl.

‎Vivi.

‎She had reached toward him without fear.

‎Placed her tiny hand against his face...

‎...and whispered...

‎"My name is Vivi."

‎The spirit spoke softly.

‎"When two souls are bound in innocence..."

‎"...they exchange more than words."

‎"You carried her true name..."

‎"...long before either of you knew."

‎Haken staggered backward.

‎"No..."

‎The spirit nodded.

‎"The thief..."

‎"...didn't steal her name from the palace."

‎"It was taken..."

‎"...from your soul."

‎The entire chapel shook violently.

‎A voice echoed through every stone.

‎Applause.

‎Slow.

‎Mocking.

‎Cenric stepped from the darkness.

‎"So..."

‎"You finally understand."

‎Behind him...

‎The hooded traitor removed their hood.

‎Vivi gasped.

‎"No..."

‎Standing beside Cenric...

‎Was Captain Taren.

‎His armor bore the royal crest.

‎But across it...

‎The crimson crescent fang.

‎"I never betrayed the kingdom," Taren said quietly.

‎"I betrayed its lies."

‎Haken drew the ancient wolf blade.

‎"You chose the wrong side."

‎Taren's eyes hardened.

‎"No."

‎"I chose the winning one."

‎Cenric smiled.

‎"Kill them."

‎The chapel exploded into darkness.
