Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 - The deserted town

It was bugging Remond as soon as he stepped into the town: why was the town empty even in the afternoon, and why were there groups of people with firearms openly walking in the town?

He thought to himself, 'Why was the man trying to get me out of this town? What is this town hiding? The thought of something off kept him up all night, then suddenly he heard a scream outside the shelter.

The scream of a terrified, desperate woman. It was far enough from the shelter that it didn't wake Sofie up, but it was also not so far away that Remond couldn't hear it. He wanted to go out and see what happened, but that was not an option, as the man warned him not to go out.

The reason he didn't go out was because of his sister, who was with him.

'As I thought, it is not a safe place; I should look for another place,' worrying about the safety of his sister, Remond thought.

With that in his mind, he couldn't sleep all night. As a result of that, the shoulder started to hurt in the cold, and he collapsed on the floor unconscious.

In this situation, as well, the system didn't respond. Was the system unreliable, or was it deceiving Remond into just killing people?

After some time, Sofie woke up and saw her brother lying unconscious on the floor; she rushed to him to wake him up.

She knocked on the door repeatedly, shouting for help. That's when the man from before came and saw Remond knocked unconscious. He saw the wound on Remond and pitied him; now that he sees that both the siblings were pale and skinny, he is worried for them.

He carried Remond to a room with medical supplies in it and laid Remond on the bed. Sofie quietly followed them.

The room was filled with white light and a slight smell of chemicals and medicine. There were operating beds as well as normal ones for normal patients; Remon was placed in the normal one, but it was all empty.

When Remond was laid on the bed, he cut his jacket with a scissor and saw that it was only wrapped in a torn piece of cloth, which was already bloody. He carefully unwrapped the cloth from Remond's wound and threw that cloth.

Sofie looked quietly at her brother, who was still in pain, with a worried face.

Then the man saw that a piece of his shoulder was missing. 'How can a boy suppress this much pain at such a young age? Is he the same as that man?' the man thought to himself as he placed a medicated badge over Remond's shoulder.

After he placed the bandage, he asked Sofie to go to another room for a bit.

Then, he immediately removed the clothes from Remond's body and put on some dry, warm clothes, and covered him with a thick blanket.

He then let Sofie know that Remond was out of danger and also gave Sofie his jacket as he saw that she was shivering from the cold and told her to go into the room and try there: "Don't come out until I say so."

The man came every few hours with food for Sofie and checked for any abnormality in his condition.

Sofie was also skeptical of the man at first, but after seeing the kind of help that he was providing for her brother, she began to trust the man and was grateful to him.

...

The next day, a huge snowstorm hit the town and covered the whole town in white; as a result of that, it got even colder.

That's when, suddenly, Remond woke up, noticing that Sofie got up from a nearby bed and tears from her eyes rolled onto her cheeks.

Remond, noticing his sister crying, spoke, "Hey, I am all okay; no need to cry. See, I am all right," moving his body around in the bed.

"But you collapsed so suddenly, and you had a huge wound on your shoulder; you didn't even tell me how you got it," Sofie said, bawling her eyes out.

Remond gestures to her to come to him, comforting his sister, saying, "If I had told you anything about my wound, you would have worried about me, so I said nothing, but see, we are okay now in a faraway country with no Red Devil Gang in sight; we will be safe. "My beautiful sister, smile for your brother; don't cry," placing his hand on her chin, Remond said in a warm voice.

Sofie, still crying, smiled at her brother regardless of the tears running down her face.

After crying for some time, she fell asleep in the lap of her brother with dried tears on her cheeks. Remond, looking at Sofie, gave a peaceful smile, slowly patting her head.

The man standing beside the door for the whole time felt a sense of pure love for a sibling that moved his heart a little.

Then, when Remond looked up at the man, he approached them.

"Were you the one who gave her this jacket?" Remond asked in a soft voice, not even noticing that the man was the one who treated him, for his sister's well-being was what mattered more.

The man carrying food for Sofie said, "Yes."

Then he introduced himself as Karo; he was a tall, well-built man always wearing a gray beanie that covered his head, carrying a rifle on one shoulder, with the straps everywhere Remond saw him.

Remond introduced himself as well, thanking him for taking care of his sister for him, bowing a little from the bed.

'Karo doesn't seem like a man who would harm even a single fly. Why is he always carrying a gun and threatening us when we got here? Something is definitely going on in this town,' the thought coursed his mind.
