Chapter 20 - 020. Valuables

A wave of excitement washed over him, over the thought of finding new supplies to survive the wild, even though it was scary at first, he had slowly started getting used to it.

The thought of weakness had escaped his mind at this point, the more he realised how lonely he was in this place, the more he knew weakness wasn't accepted.

If he didn't fend for himself here, no one else would and well, that would lead to his untimely death.

'I wonder what I'll find in there, hopefully something nice and valuable!!.' He chuckled softly.

Thoughts of different materials from the clan flashed through his mind. He couldn't think of anything else, after all he hardly, ever left the clan's gates.

He hadn't experienced what other cities, clan's and states looked or felt like, he was only briefly told about them once in a while, mostly by his uncle and no one else.

'Sometimes, I miss that guy a lot. I hope he's doing well wherever he is!'.

A brief smile appeared on his face before it disappeared as the abandoned shed came into view.

Vines and grasses had taken over. Even rodents frequented the place, moving in and out of the shed but it didn't matter to him, he came for something else.

He placed his hand on the tree and began climbing, slowly ascending the tree until he got to the top, where the shed sat.

The door looked like decayed wood, with dark shades across the once brown door, signalling decay and over-saturation from constant rain and lack of maintenance.

'Whoever owned this place didn't care about it properly, but it's to my interest that he abandoned it or I would have been a slave or killed by now.'

Without a second thought, he pushed open the door. It creaked loudly, its hinges falling apart as soon as it opened.

The door fell to the ground, raising dust all over the place.

Using his hand to disperse the dusty smoke, he moved into the shed slowly, watching his every step to avoid traps.

'Wow!!,' he exclaimed, noticing three large chest boxes sitting by the corners.

They were brown in colour, with metal rims around the edges. It also looked like it suffered the same fate as the door, its body looked old and decayed but still standing strong.

The wood material used for the chest looked imported, not like he would know the difference, just that it looked stronger and newer compared to the wood constructions around the shed.

He moved closer, dropping one knee to the ground to examine the chest. It wasn't locked, just left half open.

He took his time opening the chest, carefully examining for any traps below the cover before he swung it open fully.

"Shit!" He screamed, taking one leg off the ground quickly.

Rats scattered out of the chest, scaring the daylights out of his eyes. He glanced back and they were gone, leaving the chest almost empty.

"Of course they ate the materials in here..!! Evil creatures.!!" Anger and annoyance were mixed up in his voice.

He rummaged through the remaining items in the chest, hardly anything useful. Just wet papers that were probably worth a lot before, a mirror and spoiled ink for writing.

'Tsk!'

He pulled out the mirror, the only valuable item in the box and rose to his feet, assessing the damage carefully.

'Doesn't look so bad, almost like the one in the clan. It can still be used and even sold. Just need to clean it properly, then drop it somewhere safe' a decision forming in his head.

He dropped the mirror on the ground carefully, close to the exit so he wouldn't forget.

He turned to the others, but went to the one on the left side of the shed first.

This one was empty, except for the pieces of shattered glass and a bottle cover.

He didn't waste time, he went over to the other chest and opened it. It wasn't as disappointing as he thought, there was a small cup carefully placed inside, like three but two of them were already broken.

Probably the movements of the rodents, the effect of the weather and the lack of maintenance.

Spiders crawled around the place, their webs all over his face but he didn't bother with it as long as they didn't attack him or pose any danger.

He dipped his hand and picked up the cup, from a closer look it looked small and sky-blue, with a smooth, gentle curve and a soft glow to its glaze.

Thin crack lines ran across the surface like tiny frozen lightning, giving it an ancient, precious look. A faded mark sat on the bottom, barely visible but clearly old.

"This looks vintage, with a couple of scrubs it should look clean again." A smile finally spread on his face.

He picked up the mirror from the floor and stepped outside the shed. Using his hand, he pulled off the spider webs all over his face and body.

"Maybe I should have reconsidered and used a stick to remove the webs while I was moving in there."

After he was done, he stared down and noticed there was no way he would get down the shed without breaking or cracking either of the items.

'Shii!, how do I go about this now. I can't possibly throw them down like I normally do, they look very much breakable'

He stood there for a long while before a thought flashed through his mind and he decided to try it out.

He dropped both items on the floor and stepped on the tree branch, staring down he noticed a stem sticking out.

It looked strong enough to hold a person's weight, but it was short. He closed his eyes, imagining the stem and where it was.

Then he moved his hand in response, trying to control it.

He opened one of his eyes to see if it worked but the stem didn't extend an inch from its position.

He drew back and thought again, another idea crossing his mind.

He did the same movements, this time he channelled the energy inside him toward the stem.

He slightly opened one of his eyes and watched the stem slowly extend towards him, growing thicker by the second until it formed a bridge to the ground.

A lot of excitement formed inside him, but he controlled it.

"Can't make noise here, I'll wait till I get back to the shed before I celebrate."

Picking up the two items he found inside the second shed, he slid down using the extended stem until he reached the forest floor.

A smirk appeared on his face, a storm of happiness growing inside him.
