Chapter 39 - A Canvas of Scars and Serenity.

- As I glanced out the carriage window, the last rays of the sun bled across the horizon, painting the sky in fiery hues.

- I'm on my way to the academy, but as the day gives way to night, so too does our journey give way to danger.

- " Yesterday was the end of our summer vacation, and the people of the city made a big party for our journey back." I mumbled to myself, recalling the festive air."

- It was a beautiful and humbling night, everyone smiling and cheering as the beautiful night goes without an end.

- The carriage jolted, interrupting my train of thought. We were nearing the Whispering Woods, a forest so dense that the shadows themselves seemed to hold secrets.

- Suddenly, a cacophony of sound erupted from the front of the carriage.

- "Woah, easy there, boy!" the driver yelled at the horses as they whinnied and reared back.

- I peered out the window. A group of bandits had emerged from the shadows, their forms a menacing silhouette against the dim twilight.

- They surrounded our carriage, blocking our way, their crude weapons glinting in the fading light.

- A figure walked between them, his face scarred and his chest a canvas of old battle wounds. He wielded an axe with a vile grin on his face.

- "Everybody in the carriage, get out!" he bellowed, his voice a harsh command meant to intimidate. "I'm not in the mood for games. Out, now!"

- I looked at them through the window, then changed my focus to Rose, who sat next to me.

- I thought she might get scared like before. But as I turned to her, I found her surprisingly calm.

- She was like a still pond on a windy day, unperturbed and serene.

- I was stunned, to say the least. This was nothing like her; usually, she'd be screaming and hiding behind me, her whole body shaking with fear.

- Then it hit me. I realized that the battles she had engaged in had boosted her confidence and bravery.

- She wasn't the same girl I used to protect but a complete different one.

- the bandits were about to find that out the hard way.

- "Despite the situation, you look very calm, Rose," I said to her, a hint of admiration in my voice.

- "Well, this is nothing compared to other things," she replied, a small, knowing smile playing on her lips. "Don't worry, Leon, I'll be fine. Just... be careful, okay?"

- I nodded and walked out of the carriage. The bandit leader's eyes met mine, a flicker of surprise in their depths as he registered my lack of fear.

- I knew this was a dance I'd done before, a dangerous ballet of steel and wits, and I was ready to lead.

- "You're a brave one, boy," the leader sneered, his gaze sweeping over me. "But bravery won't save you."

- "We'll see about that," I replied, my voice calm and steady. - "Why don't you and your friends go home? We have no quarrel with you, and you have nothing we want."

- The bandit leader laughed, a harsh, grating sound that echoed through the quiet forest. "I'm afraid it doesn't work like that," he said. "Your carriage looks expensive, and your clothes look even more so. I think you have more than enough to pay for our... inconvenience."

- I knew this will be his answer. I could give them all our money, but that wouldn't mean they will leave us.

- Bandits like these weren't known for their mercy. They'd take everything we had and still leave us for dead.

- As I took my stance, "I'll give you one last chance," I said, my voice low. "Turn back, and I'll let you live."

- The bandit leader only smiled, a sinister grin that sent a shiver down my spine. "You're a fool," he said. "You're one man against many. You're outmatched, outmanned, and out of luck. Now, let's see what you've got."

- With a roar, he charged at me, his axe raised high. The battle had begun.

- I drew my sword, its cold steel a familiar comfort in my hand.

- I parried his axe with ease and changed its momentum and landed a powerful kick on his gut that he flew back.

- He coughed and ordered the others to attack me at the same time trying to overwhelm me with number.

- But I immediately created a mist around the whole area like before, making them not to see me and even themselves.

- Then I channelled mist around my katana making it fast, swiftn and silent.

- After a little amount of time the bandits were annihilated and were lying on the ground.

- I walked toward the leader who was terrified of what he saw not moving of his place.

- He was crying and begging for his life but I just looked at him, he was acting high moments ago and now is begging for his life.

- I made him follow the others and went back to the carriage after cleaning the place with magic.

-Then we arrived at the capital. It was bustling as usual, but this time it felt different.

- Our second year was about to begin, and I had a feeling new events, both good and bad, were about to unfold.
