Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Learning A Lock (1)

"I've just returned," Jian Wei murmured, his voice low and weary as he drew near to Lian Yan. Without a moment's pause, he enveloped her in his arms, pulling her close into a tight embrace. The unexpectedness of his action sent a jolt of surprise through Lian Yan, her body momentarily stiffening in response.

"J-Jian Wei?" she stuttered, her voice a mere whisper, laced with uncertainty. Her eyes, wide with confusion, searched his face as she tried to understand the sudden shift in his demeanor. This was a side of him she had never encountered before, and it left her feeling both cautious and curious. "What has happened?" she inquired, her mind racing with a myriad of possibilities. She had no inkling of what he might have faced during his absence, and her first thought drifted to the mission he had undertaken. "Were you able to find them?" she ventured, gently attempting to extricate herself from his hold, needing to see his expression, to read the emotions in his eyes. But Jian Wei only held her closer, his grip firm and unwavering.

"I believe I require your assistance," he murmured into her shoulder, his voice muffled yet sincere. He made no move to loosen his hold, his body language conveying a sense of desperation and fatigue. "I need your help with another matter," he continued, his words heavy with emotion. "It seems as though I've been constantly seeking your support since the moment you arrived."

Lian Yan, sensing the depth of his distress, gradually relaxed into his embrace. She returned the hug, her hand gently patting his back in a soothing rhythm, offering what comfort she could. "What is it that you need help with?" she asked softly, her voice filled with concern and a genuine willingness to assist. "You mustn't feel guilty about asking for my help," she assured him, her words sincere and heartfelt. "Remember, it was my choice to seek you out initially. If you believe that I can be of use, I am more than willing to dedicate my time and efforts, as long as I understand what is required of me."

Jian Wei sighed deeply, his breath warm against her neck, sending a shiver down her spine. "I need your help to rescue one of my uncles from imprisonment," he confessed, his voice barely above a whisper, as if the weight of his words was too much to bear.

Lian Yan's eyes widened in shock at his revelation, but she did not hesitate. She gave a firm nod, her resolve steadfast and unwavering. "I am willing to assist you in any way that I can," she declared, her voice steady and determined. "Do you wish for me to create a diversion for the guards, or perhaps something else?" she asked, her mind already racing with plans and strategies, considering the various ways she could aid him in this perilous task. She did not even question the reasons behind her uncle's imprisonment; her sole focus was on how she could support Jian Wei in this dangerous endeavor.

"Actually, I need you to be able to slip through the bars of the prison cell," Jian Wei explained, no sign of being a joke, his gaze meeting hers with an intensity that sent a shiver down her spine. He finally pulled back from their embrace, his hands resting on her shoulders as he looked down at her, his expression a mix of concern and determination. "I am unable to fit through the narrow opening, and I do not wish to alert the guards to our presence."

Lian Yan looked up at him, her expression a blend of determination and curiosity, her eyes reflecting the flickering torchlight in the room. "So, my primary task is to maneuver myself through the bars?" she asked, her tone suggesting a desire to fully comprehend the extent of what was being asked of her. "And what else will be required of me?"

Jian Wei hesitated for a moment, his gaze searching hers, as if trying to gauge her reaction to what he was about to say. "Are you familiar with the art of picking chain locks?" he asked, his eyes never leaving hers, as if the very words were a secret meant only for her ears. He needed her to possess this skill as well, and it was clear that the success of their mission hinged on her ability to perform this delicate task.

Despite her noble upbringing and her history of defying conventions, Lian Yan was not one to shy away from a challenge. She looked up at Jian Wei, her expression resolute, her eyes reflecting a steely determination that belied her delicate appearance. "Although I may be a noblewoman with a penchant for defying expectations, I am not entirely inexperienced in matters such as these," she asserted, pretty clear that she was not that obnoxious during her escapes. "You can teach me what I need to know, and I will do my utmost to master the skill."

Jian Wei studied her for a moment, his gaze intense and focused, as if trying to discern the depth of her resolve. "How quickly can you grasp new concepts and techniques?" he asked, his tone grave, his eyes never leaving hers. "This endeavor will be fraught with challenges and obstacles, and it will require your utmost concentration and attention to detail." He needed to ensure that she was truly capable of handling the task at hand, that she could manage the pressure and intricacy of their impending undertaking, for the stakes were high, and failure was not an option.

"Don't underestimate my abilities," Lian Yan asserted with a determined edge to her voice, her eyes reflecting a fierce resolve. "Quickly, fetch me one of those chain locks so I can begin to understand how to manipulate it. Standing here idle isn't going to accomplish anything." She was eager to get to the heart of the matter, her tone leaving no room for delay. "With any luck, there will only be one lock to contend with," she added, her mind already racing with the possibilities and challenges that lay ahead.

Jian Wei, sensing her urgency, gently released her from their embrace and swiftly exited the room, his movements hurried and purposeful. His sudden quietude struck Lian Yan as unusual, but she brushed aside her thoughts and seated herself on the couch where she had spent the last few nights. The minutes ticked by slowly, each one feeling like an eternity as she waited for Jian Wei's return. Finally, the sound of faint metallic clinks echoed through the room, signaling his arrival. In his hands, he held a chain lock, its cold, hard surface gleaming in the dim light.

"This is how the chains will function and appear," Jian Wei explained, his tone was in no way teasing or joking as he presented the lock to Lian Yan.

As Lian Yan examined the chain lock more closely, she noticed that it consisted of two separate locks, each designed to be fastened around a wrist. The realization dawned on her that these were the types of restraints that must have been used to secure Jian Wei's uncle's hands.

"Do you know how to unlock it?" she asked Jian Wei, her eyes meeting his with a determined gaze. The both of them were going to have to be patient with one another, not that they have not. "Show me and teach me the technique." She gently patted the space beside her on the couch, indicating for him to sit down next to her. It was clear that this endeavor would require time and patience, and she was prepared to dedicate the next day or two to learning the skill. It did remind her at that moment. "How fast did you want me to learn it?" She added along.
