Chapter 9 - The Chariot

Clang! Bang! Boom!

Violent noises echoed around the training grounds as Pluvia and some hobgoblins attacked Hakurou in unison. While Pluvia had not wished to have to train beside such... individuals, Hakurou was having none of that. Pluvia's days were going by slowly and in a simple routine. She would wake up, get dressed, and come to train. Then she would eat breakfast, study, and then train some more. After she would shower, have dinner, and then train a bit more before bed. Her every waking moment was consumed with thoughts of how she could be doing better in battle.

Her parents, for their part, had not said anything about her training. There would be moments when Pluvia doubted they even realized that she was doing this without their permission, but then she would remember that Lady Ciel was beside them and quickly dismiss such a thought. Pluvia took their silence as tacit approval and didn't bother to mention anything to them.

Someone who had given notice to her new activities was her annoying younger brother. Tamura would refuse to leave whenever she went to train, always on the sidelines watching and babbling nonsense. While he was a nuisance, he wasn't in the way at least. Plus, in the heat of battle, she barely noticed him at times.

Lord Hakurou was relentless in his training and never treated her any better than he treated the rest of his students. However, Pluvia noticed her own improvement quickly. While in the beginning, she was far behind her peers, every day that passed, she grew better, her swordsmanship more refined, her movements more fluid, her confidence ever increasing. Sure, she hadn't managed to land a single hit on the old man, but at least she was keeping up with his movements for the most part.

Lord Hakurou was interesting in that department. Whenever he was moving around them, he would move too fast for her eyes to track, but when he went to attack, he would purposely slow down so that her and the goblins could react and block or attempt to fight back. It was like a test of their reaction speed, and Pluvia could tell she would soon get better than the others at it. What Pluvia wanted to be able to do first and foremost, however, was track his every movement, but even she knew she was far from being able to do such a thing.

Days turned to weeks as Pluvia continued her new schedule, her pursuit for improvement unrelenting. She was right, it didn't take long for her to be better than her peers, with Lord Hakurou even saying that she was the best student he's had after her father and one other. It was thrilling; every second of combat had her blood rushing and her mind racing. If it weren't for Lord Hakurou restricting her from constant training, she would have done so.

By the end of the month, Pluvia was able to predict where Hakurou would strike with ease even, without being able to see him. Finally, she was actually engaging in offense rather than just defense. Before long, she heard it, the Voice of the World,
