Chapter 47 - The Shrine

The trail narrowed as they moved deeper into the woods, the bright openness of the beach gradually replaced by towering trees and thick greenery. Sunlight filtered through the canopy in scattered beams, painting the ground in shifting patches of gold and shadow. The air felt different here, cooler, heavier, alive with the quiet sounds of nature.

Lilo walked ahead of them with ease, barefoot and confident, as if the forest itself welcomed her.

"That way leads to a small lake," she said, pointing off to the side as they passed a bend in the trail. "You can sometimes see native birds there and if you're lucky… turtles."

Phineas leaned slightly to look. "Noted for future exploration."

Ferb gave a small nod, as if mentally logging the location.

Behind them, Candace swatted at her arm for what felt like the hundredth time.

"Why are there so many mosquitoes?!" she complained, clearly reaching her limit. "Is this normal?!"

Douglas snorted. "You're basically a walking buffet right now."

"This is not funny!"

Meanwhile, Dee Dee had found a new source of entertainment.

Stitch.

She hovered around him like an overly affectionate cloud, patting his head, poking his cheeks, occasionally hugging him out of nowhere.

"Fluffy!" she chirped.

Stitch, for his part, was not enjoying it.

He growled softly, ears twitching in irritation, trying to sidestep her attempts but Dee Dee was relentless.

Dexter walked a few steps behind the group, his attention no longer on the trail ahead but on the small blue figure moving among them.

Stitch.

He was something else entirely.

A faint, almost imperceptible glow flickered across the lenses of Dexter's glasses. Lines of data streamed silently, projected only for his eyes to see.

It wasn't just ordinary tech.

Metal was bonded directly to the frame of his glasses, spreading across them in a thin, nearly invisible layer. It functioned like a specialized mode, something akin to Max Steel's camouflage systems but instead of drawing from an external energy source, it fed directly from Dexter himself.

The drain was minimal barely noticeable but constant.

That was the reason behind the energy drinks for guel.

A steady supply to offset the small but continuous consumption required to keep the system active.

Right now, it was worth it.

Because what he saw wasn't something anyone else could.

[Designation: Experiment 626 "Stitch."]

[Classification: Genetically engineered apex organism.]

[Genetic Composition: Tetramand, Manglyoid, Goo-Gobbling Booger-Beast, People-Eating Puss Monkey, Deadly Disemboweler, Boiling Tongue-Boid, Bottom Feeding Scum Sucker]

[Threat Level: Catastrophic.]

Dexter's gaze sharpened slightly as he walked. The list alone was absurd. Multiple apex-level species… combined into one.

But one name stood out immediately.

Tetramand.

His mind instantly connected the dots: Four Arms. Raw strength, combat instincts. A species known across systems for being naturally aggressive, built for war.

"…That explains a lot," Dexter murmured quietly.

Stitch's early behavior, the chaos, the destructive tendencies it all lined up disturbingly well and yet… now?

Dexter glanced at him again.

Annoyed,s lightly feral but… restrained.

It has changed.

That, more than anything, was interesting.

Ahead, Lilo suddenly stopped.

"Wait."

She stepped forward and grabbed a large leaf hanging over part of the path, pulling it aside with a small flourish.

"Behold... Wailua Falls."

The group stepped forward and froze.

Before them stood a breathtaking sight, a twin waterfall cascading down a sheer cliff, water crashing into a pool below in a constant roar. Mist rose into the air, catching sunlight and forming faint rainbows that shimmered and vanished.

"Whoa…" Phineas breathed.

Even Candace forgot about the mosquitoes for a moment.

"It's… actually really pretty," she admitted.

But as they stood there, something else happened. A sharp beep cut through the moment.

Phineas immediately looked down at his device the Spectra-Seeker 3000.

The screen pulsed, nergy readings spiking.

His eyes widened. "Oh—oh! Guys!"

He turned, scanning the area, then pointed. "It's coming from the waterfall!"

Dexter stepped closer, glancing at the device as well.

"…Looks like you got your mystery," he said.

Phineas grinned. "Looks like we're near, everyone."

______

Getting closer wasn't exactly straightforward.

They had to head down toward the water, where a small tourist area offered kayaks for rent. After a quick exchange and some slightly confused looks from the guide the group found themselves paddling across the water.

The sound of the falls grew louder.

Mist dampened their clothes as they approached the cascading curtain.

"Alright," Phineas said, paddling forward, "if there's something hidden, it's probably behind there."

One by one, they passed through the waterfall.

Water rushed over them briefly then they emerged behind it.

A small, rocky clearing.

They stepped out of their kayaks, looking around.

"…Huh," Douglas said. "That's it?"

Phineas frowned, checking his device again. "No, that's not right… it says the signal is strongest here."

Dexter stepped closer, studying the readings as well. "…It's definitely here."

Candace crossed her arms, already unimpressed. "Great. So we got soaked for nothing. There's literally nothing here—"

She leaned casually against a rock and froze.

A low rumble echoed beneath them.

"Wait—"

The rock shifted.

"—what did I just?!"

With a heavy grinding sound, part of the stone wall slid inward, ancient mechanisms awakening after who knew how long. Dust fell as a hidden doorway revealed itself, darkness stretching beyond.

Silence.

Dexter smirked faintly.

"Wow, Candace," he said, voice just edged with sarcasm, "you're really good at finding hidden things."

Candace blinked. "I didn't even—!"

But no one was listening anymore. The group gathered near the entrance.

"…Well," Phineas said, excitement returning full force, "this is definitely something."

They stepped inside.

The tunnel was narrow at first, the light from outside fading quickly behind them. Darkness swallowed the path until they pulled out flashlights, beams cutting through dust-filled air.

The deeper they went, the quieter it became.

"…Is it just me," Douglas muttered, "or is it getting hot?"

"It is," Dexter replied, already noticing the temperature shift.

Minutes passed then finally a light appear. A glow at the end of the tunnel.

They stepped forward and emerged. What greeted them wasn't just unexpected.

It was impossible.

A vast cavern stretched before them, forming a natural dome that soared high overhead. Rivers of molten lava flowed through the ground like glowing veins, casting the entire space in a deep, fiery orange. Heat radiated from every direction, the air shimmering slightly from it.

Above them, the "sky" of the cavern burned with reflected light, as if they stood inside the heart of something ancient.

At the center stood a shrine.

It rose from a platform of blackened stone, its structure both alien and familiar. Carvings spiraled along its surface, intricate, flowing designs resembling a great serpent coiling endlessly around itself. Feathers etched into the stone gave it an almost divine presence, wings spread along its sides as if ready to ascend.

A massive serpent head crowned the top, mouth slightly open, fangs bared, not in aggression, but in power. Its eyes were hollow, yet somehow felt… watching.

Alive with something unseen.

"Those old stories…" Lilo whispered, eyes wide as she took it all in. "…they're really true."
