Chapter 48 - Murals

The heat inside the cavern pressed against them like a living thing.

The air shimmered faintly, carrying the scent of molten stone and something older… something that didn't belong to the modern world.

For a moment, no one spoke.

Then, almost as if drawn by the same invisible thread, they moved. Carefully, the group approached the shrine.

The structure rose from the center of the volcanic dome like a relic stolen from another continent—no, another era entirely. Its stone was dark, almost obsidian-like, yet etched with intricate carvings that pulsed faintly under the orange glow of the surrounding lava. Vines of hardened magma curled along its base like frozen serpents, and every surface seemed to tell a story.

Candace hesitated near the entrance. "Okay… I'm just gonna say it. This is officially the weirdest vacation ever."

Dee Dee, on the other hand, had already skipped ahead, pressing her hands against one of the pillars. "Ooooh, it's warm!"

"Don't touch everything," Dexter muttered, though his own hand hovered just inches from the stone, eyes scanning every inch of it.

Phineas stepped forward, gaze bright with curiosity. "It's incredible…"

Together, they crossed the threshold. Inside, the temperature rose even higher.

Massive stone pillars stretched upward, supporting a high ceiling covered in murals that seemed to move when the firelight flickered.

The walls were lined with ancient glyphs, carved deep, deliberate, preserved through time. The hall itself was wide, almost cathedral-like, leading their eyes inevitably toward the center where it stood.

A statue.

A humanoid figure with scaled features and vast, folded wings rising behind its back. Its body was adorned in detailed Mayan attire, ornate chest pieces, layered cloth, intricate jewelry carved from stone. Its face was both regal and alien, reptilian yet intelligent, as if it was something that once walked among people… or ruled over them.

Ferb tilted his head slightly, eyes narrowing in focus as he stepped closer to the inscriptions at its base.

"A Quetzalcoatl," he said calmly.

Candace blinked. "A quetza-what now?"

Dexter didn't look away from the statue.

"Quetzalcoatl," he repeated. "A Mesoamerican deity, associated with the sun, the sky, and agriculture. Often described as a feathered serpent. Part god, and part of something else."

Phineas frowned, one hand on his chin. "Which raises a very interesting question…"

He gestured around them. "Why is a Mesoamerican god… in Hawaii?"

The question lingered. The place itself felt like it shouldn't exist.

Different mythologies weren't supposed to overlap like this. Not geographically or culturally.

And yet here it was.

"It might be explained in the murals," Dexter said, already looking up.

Phineas turned. "Ferb, you can read Nahuatl glyphs, right?"

Ferb adjusted his posture slightly.

From his chest pocket, he calmly pulled out a pair of glasses, placing them on with quiet precision. He stepped back, gaze sweeping across the walls and ceiling, eyes tracing the ancient symbols.

Then he began

"Long before modern civilizations," he said evenly, "after the War of the Beast… the Dragon Council was formed."

The others looked up.

"The murals depict a large-scale conflict," Ferb continued, eyes moving across the images. "Dragons, humans, other entities… all engaged in battle against a singular, massive force, Kur."

Above them, carved into stone, was chaos.

Fire and shadow, wings and claws. A towering dark entity looming over everything.

Candace swallowed. "Okay… that's not creepy at all."

Ferb went on, undisturbed.

"The council was created as an alliance. Its purpose… to maintain balance between the magical and mortal realms."

He shifted slightly, gaze focusing on another section. "It consisted of four dragons, chosen by the Dragon King."

Their eyes followed his.

"The Aztec Dragon," Ferb said, "keeper of the Flame of the South."

A massive serpent-like dragon adorned with feathered plumes, its body wreathed in fire that resembled flowing solar flares, its wings vast and radiant, like burning skies given form.

"The European Dragon," he continued, "master of air and lightning."

A towering, winged beast with broad, armored scales and jagged horns, lightning cracking along its wings as storms gathered at its command.

"The Arctic Dragon… ruler of cold and knowledge."

A sleek, elegant creature, its body long and crystalline, surrounded by frost and symbols etched in ice, its eyes glowing with quiet, ancient wisdom.

"And the Chinese Dragon… Guardian of the East."

Dexter's eyes narrowed.

"…Shendu."

Ferb nodded slightly. "Yes."

The mural showed him clearly.

Long, serpentine body, horns curling from his head, eyes burning with power.

Ferb's voice remained calm, but there was weight behind it now. "Shendu… was the most powerful among them until ambition consumed him."

The next mural shifted in tone. Darkness crept into the carvings.

"He sought to merge dragonfire with demonic chi," Ferb continued. "To reclaim the throne of Kur… and rule."

The images grew violent.

"Because of this," Ferb said, "the other three dragons, the Dragon King… and a human named Lo Pei united against him."

The mural depicted Shendu being brought down and opposed by the others.

The Dragon King towered above all, massive, imposing, his body forged of obsidian-black scales that seemed to absorb light itself. His presence alone radiated authority.

Alongside him the feathered Aztec dragon, the storm-bearing European, the frost-wreathed Arctic and a single human.

"They defeated him," Ferb said. "Extracted his powers… and sealed them into twelve stone talismans."

In another mural, twelve octagonal stones where shown each bearing an animal.

Candace raised a hand. "Okay—pause. Why are Chinese zodiac animals in Hawaii?"

"Shhh," Phineas said quickly, eyes still glued to the wall. "Story's not done."

Ferb continued.

"After the betrayal… the Dragon King expanded the council. From four… to twelve."

More dragons appeared in the carvings now in different forms and elements. "Each was assigned to guard one of the talismans."

He shifted again, eyes narrowing slightly. "The Aztec Dragon… traveled across the world through ancient energy currents."

The mural changed into volcanoes, oceans, and different lands.

"Where the earth burned strongest," Ferb said, "it left fragments of its power."

His gaze lifted slightly.

"One of those places… became the volcanic islands now known as Kauai."

Silence fell.

"And here…" Ferb finished, "…a talisman was hidden."

The story ended there.

Dexter exhaled slowly.

"It matches…" he murmured. "A book I found before but this adds more context."

Phineas turned instantly, eyes lighting up. "Wait—you know about this?"

Dexter nodded slightly. "I bought a book at an antique shop. I thought it was just myth… but now…"

Ferb pushed his glasses up slightly, clearly interested.

"Can we see it?" Phineas asked eagerly.

"When we get back," Dexter replied.

That seemed to satisfy him... for now.

A beat passed then...

"Hey… guys?"

Douglas's voice cut through the silence, they turned. He stood near the statue, leaning slightly forward.

"Come look at this."

The group gathered around him as Douglas pointed at the statue's waist.

There, embedded into a carved belt was something familiar.

An octagonal stone and etched into its surface...

Was a dragon.
