Estimating that Silver wouldn't be leaving the restaurant for a while, Natsui gestured for the waiter and ordered some quick, simple meals for himself and Sabrina, along with two cups of coffee for their dinner.
Soon, the waiter brought over several sandwiches with different fillings, as well as some vegetable salad, fries, and chicken nuggets.
While they ate, Looker gave them a rough outline of the upcoming International Police operation.
He was very candid, seemingly unconcerned that Natsui and Sabrina might leak the information and disrupt their plans. After all, the two had been a great help in Kanto, and to take down Team Rocket, the International Police's strength alone was far from enough. That's why they needed the help of the Pokémon League and trainers like Natsui.
Natsui ate four sandwiches before he was full. Just as he was about to start on a fifth, he saw through the window that Silver had gotten up and was leaving the restaurant.
Seeing this, to Looker's astonishment, Natsui performed the feat of eating a sandwich in three bites, stuffing the remaining portions into his mouth. With his cheeks puffed out, he quickly paid the bill, and the three of them also left the coffee shop.
The night air was quite cool, and a gentle breeze made goosebumps rise on their skin.
By now, the streetlights had long been on, but there were even fewer pedestrians.
Silver walked steadily towards the northwest of the town, his pace unhurried, seemingly unaware that he was being followed.
Seeing Looker about to sneak after him, Natsui grabbed his arm.
"No, even though it's gotten dark, there's almost no one on the street right now. If we get too close, he'll spot us easily."
Looker had obviously already realized this problem. He shrugged helplessly. "I don't want to do this either, but if we delay any longer, he'll really get away. And because I came in a hurry, there are no other International Police officers nearby to coordinate with, so I can only take the risk."
In Natsui's world, they would probably use some high-tech means for tailing, but right now…
"What's the big deal?" Natsui chuckled, then looked down at his shadow. "At times like these, of course we have to rely on the power of Pokémon. Hey, Gengar, you heard all that, right? I'm counting on you."
Gengar's head popped out of the shadow, and it cackled. "Of course, no problem. So, should I kidnap him? Or just kill him when no one's around?"
Natsui: …
"Come on…" sighing, Natsui said with a weary heart, "I'm just asking you to secretly follow him and see where he's going and what he's doing. Don't always make it sound so terrifying, okay?"
In truth, Natsui could have sent Charizard to scout from the air, or had Sabrina use her psychic powers to sense Silver's location. But after thinking it over, he still decided to send Gengar.
"Haha!" Gengar laughed loudly. "Of course I know! I was just trying to lighten the tense atmosphere with a little joke."
"Who's in the mood for jokes right now?" Natsui shook his head, feeling a headache coming on, and gave one last instruction. "Remember, while you're following him, leave some markers along the way so we can find you. Most importantly, don't let him spot you, and don't go off and play any pranks on your own."
Gengar puffed out its chest. "Don't worry, leave it to me!"
With that, under their watchful eyes, its body began to slowly turn transparent, as if it were becoming invisible, until it had completely disappeared.
Then, a cool breeze blew past them, and they all knew it was Gengar, having silently gone after him.
Looking in the direction Silver and Gengar had gone, Looker said with an envious tone, "Sigh, to have captured so many powerful and reliable Pokémon, it's truly amazing."
Hearing him say this, Natsui said, puzzled, "Then why don't you catch a few more Pokémon? I remember you only have a Growlithe and a Croagunk, right? As an International Police officer in such a dangerous profession, isn't that a bit risky?"
"Can't be helped," Looker smiled. "My daily tasks are very demanding. I really don't have time to catch Pokémon, let alone the energy to care for and train them. Don't look down on them just because there are only two. They are extremely reliable partners. For me, they are more than enough."
The three stood there for a while longer until Silver was out of sight. Only then did they slowly follow in the direction he had left.
They walked for a long way without seeing any sign of Silver or Gengar. Fortunately, every few dozen meters, they found a conspicuous arrow in a prominent spot, ensuring they wouldn't lose their target.
The sky grew darker and darker. After crossing most of the town, they finally arrived in front of a large courtyard.
Inside the courtyard was a three-story building with a round tower, which looked like some kind of research facility and was quite impressive.
Looking at the building, Looker had an 'I knew it' expression on his face and said excitedly, "This is Professor Elm's laboratory! As expected, Team Rocket's target is here!"
With that, he looked around, but after a long look, he didn't see any other Team Rocket members.
Professor Elm…
Natsui stroked his chin and tried to recall.
In truth, he didn't have a deep impression of Professor Elm. He only remembered that he was the Pokémon Professor of the Johto region, responsible for providing starter Pokémon to new trainers, and that he was a former student of Professor Oak. He couldn't remember anything more than that.
Just then, Gengar's head popped out from behind the courtyard wall. It beckoned to Natsui and whispered, "Over here, over here! That guy named Silver has already entered the courtyard!"
Seeing that no one was around, Natsui had Sabrina wait outside the wall as backup, then he and Looker agilely vaulted over it.
As soon as they landed, they saw Silver crouching in a bush in the distance, his gaze fixed on the three-story building. Seeing this, the two of them quickly hid behind a large tree to avoid being spotted.
Clearly, Silver didn't realize that while he was the hunter, he was also being hunted.
He would never have thought that his every move was being watched.
After a long time, seeing that the surroundings were still quiet, Looker finally couldn't help but ask, "Strange, why is it only Silver? Why haven't any other Team Rocket members appeared?"
Natsui was silent for a moment before offering his speculation. "Perhaps there are no others. I think this is just him acting alone."
"Acting alone?"
Hearing this, Looker's face immediately fell. If that were the case, wouldn't he have wasted a lot of energy for nothing?
