Chapter 75 - Brother and Sister (2)

"Did you just microwave cereal..?"

Sunny turned around from the counter, slowly he took the spoon and brought it to his mouth, chewing very slowly.

"Yeah..?"

Rain gave him a disgusted look before turning around back to the TV. They should honestly have a talk; she hasn't gone to school in a week, all she's done is come to his place. Well.. he turned out just fine without school! So he's sure it's not that important. Plus isn't this process to show that she trusts him? Well, in all honesty he wasn't sure if he should tell her he's her brother. Of course he will eventually, but to tell her this soon just feels weird.

"So, how's school? Not that you go, but still wouldn't hurt to ask."

He leaned back on the counter eating his warm microwaved cereal, which was surprisingly good.

She tensed up before looking backwards at him with a shaky crooked smile.

"I may or may not.."

She whispered the last part so he couldn't hear what she said. Placing the bowl down he took steps closer before listening once again. She looked up at him with a guilty look before saying it.

"Be failing my classes.."

Damnation.

He didn't care about her classes, but there was one thing he did care about — that thing knocking at his door right now. Rain shot him a hurried glance, panic spreading across her face. With a sigh he pointed upstairs to signal at the bedroom he never uses. Well, it will be in use soon; just some days ago he agreed to let Effie stay over.

Stiffly walking towards the door, he opened it, to be met with both of Rain's parents.

"Evening! Mr and Mrs.. sorry I never got your last name now that I think about it!"

Putting up a perfect act he put on a casual face and tone, ignoring the panic in his heart.

Wait? Why was he panicking..

He thought back to Rain's words.

'An adult man and a teenage girl who could be easily-'

Fuck.

In short, he was screwed.

Nephis looked down at the pod. Placing her hand on it, she felt the coldness of the glass. The slumbering Cassie was inside of it; she remembered a fairytale her grandmother used to tell her.

It was the story of Sleeping Beauty, but sadly in this story there is no prince. She thought of her and Sunny, but the two of them? No, there was no possible way. She knew this better than anybody. Because when someone truly looked into Sunny's eyes they would see a dream that outweighs even hers. A dream far too big for her and Cassie to be included.

Yet still, despite knowing that.

Her lips fell onto the glass, just like how the prince's fell onto Snow White's.

Sadly though, this wasn't a fairytale.

Cassie remained asleep and unmoving.

A fear found its way to Nephis's heart, her stomach tensing up like it was boiling in anxiousness. The image of her hollow mother overlapping with the image of Cassie in the pod.

She stole a few breaths from the world before turning around and leaving the room. In the end, one truth remained.

Grasping her heart, she realized she didn't know what that truth was. She knew it existed, but she couldn't fathom what it would be. The only thing she could fathom were the tears running down her face.

---

"We know our daughter is in here."

Fuck.

Pushing him aside as they walked through the door, they began to look around the house.

Wait.

Rain + Bedroom + Stranger's house = ...

Fuck.

Through the back of his feet he sent shadows out, navigating the way through until they reached the bedroom window. He opened it, and moments later he closed it using the shadow. He could only hope she ended up getting out.

By the time they came from down the stairs, someone was following them. This someone being Rain, of course, with an apologetic look on her face.

The glares bore into him.

This was going to be a long day.
