Chapter 156 - Chapter 156: Jellal

Noah was still walking toward the crater when the air changed.

He felt it before he saw it. A shift in presence, the way the space around a person carries weight when that person is carrying a significant amount of power. Then a figure cleared the edge of the ruined buildings at speed, crossed the distance to the crater in seconds, and came to a stop beside Zancrow and Kawazu.

Behind Noah, he heard both Erza and Ultear go tense. Not the sound of it, but the feeling, the way the atmosphere around two people changes when they suddenly have to recalculate a situation they thought they had a handle on.

He understood why immediately. The new arrival was stronger than either of them. Significantly. And they were standing on the wrong side of the crater.

Noah looked at them.

A cloak, full length, hood pulled all the way up. A mask covering the face, leaving nothing readable. The disguise was thorough and clearly intentional. But where the hood met the shoulder, a few strands of hair had escaped the fabric.

Sky blue.

Noah looked at that hair for a moment and held the thought that came with it.

He had seen that color before. He saw it regularly, in fact, at the guild. On Mystogan, who wore his own mask and his own traveling clothes and kept his identity carefully managed for reasons that Noah understood and respected. Mystogan was the Jellal of another world, Edolas rather than this one, moving constantly to deal with problems that belonged to his home rather than theirs.

Which meant the person standing in that crater was most likely the Jellal of this world. Same hair, same build from what the cloak allowed, same general presence. And he was here, with Grimoire Heart, which meant at some point in his life something had gone badly wrong and Hades had been the one waiting on the other side of it.

The power coming off him was real. Substantial. Hades had clearly invested in this one. But underneath the magic, underneath the darkness that had been built up around him, Noah could feel something that didn't sit right. A dissonance. Like a note played in the wrong key, technically present but fundamentally out of place.

He filed all of this and kept watching.

"What are you doing here?" Zancrow demanded. The contempt he'd been directing outward had shifted inward, toward the cloaked figure, but it was a different quality of contempt. Familiar rather than dismissive.

The response came in a voice that had been deliberately processed into something unreadable, stripped of any identifying marker.

"The Master detected the change here and sent me to assess. Given your current condition, the order is to withdraw."

"Withdraw?" The word hit Zancrow like an insult. His expression shifted into something that had too many things happening in it at once. "You're telling me to run? From that? I wasn't ready, that's all. If I'm ready, I kill him, it's not a complicated situation."

"This is not a conversation. This is the Master's instruction."

The shift in the cloaked figure's tone was immediate and complete. Whatever the dynamic was between them, Grimoire Heart's chain of command apparently ran cleanly in one direction when the Master's name was invoked. Zancrow absorbed this, and the specific argument he'd been building visibly deflated, replaced by something that was still angry but was now pointed somewhere it couldn't go.

"Fine," he said. "If the Master says it, we go. But the mission."

His eyes moved. They found the pink-haired girl still held against Erza's shoulder, and the look in them was not ambiguous about what it meant.

The girl felt it. Her whole body went rigid against Erza's chest. Erza's arm tightened around her instantly, and Ultear moved without discussion, stepping forward and to the side, putting herself between Zancrow's line of sight and the child.

"The mission is considered complete," the cloaked figure said. "The Master's words."

Something went out of Zancrow's posture. He exhaled, and the specific dangerous energy that had been building in the direction of the girl released.

"Then we move."

Noah had been listening to all of this without contributing to it. He let them talk. He let them finish. He waited until the moment when they turned and made the first movement toward leaving.

Then he spoke.

"I don't remember agreeing to that."

All three of them stopped.

Noah had already made his decision. One clean strike, controlled, carrying something extra in it that the impact alone wouldn't convey. He raised his right hand.

The magic circle opened in gold.

What came back from the three of them was immediate. Zancrow and Kawazu, already damaged, already low on reserves, felt the pressure come off Noah and made the only calculation available to them. The cloaked figure's disguised voice came out sharp and fast:

"Grab my arm. Now. We are leaving."

No argument from either of them this time. Both hands found the cloaked figure's arm within a second. The figure cast, movement magic of some kind, and all three of them accelerated away from the crater and across the ruins at a speed that covered ground fast.

"Going somewhere."

Noah tracked them, opened a second circle in the sky ahead of their path, and brought a beam of light down from it directly onto their trajectory.

The sound of it connecting carried back to him. A sharp, genuine cry of pain from the distance, not performed, not controlled. Real.

He lined up a follow-up and then stopped.

Something had changed in the air.

It was a warning. Not a sound, not a visible signal. A pressure, precise and directed, coming from somewhere he couldn't pin down, carrying a weight that told him very clearly that whoever was generating it was operating at a level that would make the follow-up conversation significantly more complicated than he wanted it to be right now.

He lowered his hand.

"Why did you stop?" Ultear was beside him, watching the direction the three had fled, her voice genuinely puzzled. "We had them."

"Someone told me not to," Noah said. "Someone who has the ability to back that message up considerably. I felt the threat clearly."

He watched the distant figures. The cloaked one had stumbled on landing, had gone down to one knee, had pushed back up. The hood had caught the wind in the wrong moment and come loose, falling back off the figure's head as they regained their feet.

Sky blue hair.

The figure didn't turn around. They didn't look back. But the back view and the hair together were enough confirmation for what Noah had already concluded.

The three of them pulled together and moved again, the cloaked figure carrying the other two, and within moments they were gone behind the wreckage and the distance.

Noah watched the space where they'd been.

He thought about Mystogan. About the fact that somewhere in this world there was a version of the same person, shaped by a completely different set of circumstances, and that somewhere in whatever had shaped this one, Grimoire Heart had found an opening. He didn't know the specifics. He couldn't know them from out here.

But the beam he'd sent wasn't only an attack. He'd thought about that before he fired it.

Light Magic. The obvious application was offensive, and Noah used it that way regularly. But light was also the thing that dispelled darkness by existing, not by fighting it, just by being present in the same space. He'd spent considerable time with magical literature and with careful observation of Wendy's Sky Magic working out the principles behind purification, the specific mechanism by which a magic could address not just physical damage but accumulated darkness, curses, toxins, abnormal states layered onto a person from outside.

The result was Light Magic: Purify. An application that carried attacking force if he chose to add it, but whose primary function was to move through whatever had built up on a target and clear it. Dark magic, curses, foreign influences. It was essentially incompatible with dark-type power at a fundamental level. Weaker dark entities simply ceased when it touched them. Stronger ones took it as something closer to a natural counter, wounds that didn't respond to conventional treatment.

He'd embedded it in that beam. Full purification load, attack component dialed down to something that hurt rather than finished. Whether it would actually reach anything meaningful on whoever that was under the cloak, whether one strike could move anything that had been built up over years, he genuinely didn't know.

He'd done what he could do from here. The rest was out of his hands.

He turned back to Erza and Ultear.

Both of them had expressions that were doing several things at once. There was the residual tension of what had just happened, the recalibration of realizing that there had been a threat in the area that neither of them had detected at all, and underneath that, something that sat closer to frustration turned inward.

"There was someone out there warning you off," Ultear said. It wasn't quite a question.

"Yes. Strong enough that engaging would have pulled us into a prolonged fight with an uncertain outcome."

"We didn't feel anything," Erza said. Her voice was level, but the way she said it carried the weight of someone holding themselves accountable for a gap.

"Neither of us did," Ultear confirmed, and the irritation in her voice was directed entirely at herself.

Noah looked at both of them.

"It means you have more to develop," he said. "Not a failure. A marker. You know now where the next threshold is."

Neither of them looked particularly comforted by this, which he understood. Knowing where the gap was didn't close it. But it was the truth, and they were both people who preferred that to a more comfortable version of it.

He turned and looked at the ruins spread out in every direction around them.

"There are survivors in there," he said. "I can feel them. That's what matters right now."

He started walking.
