Chapter 157 - Chapter 157: Rescue

Noah read the expressions on both their faces clearly enough to know what they were doing to themselves.

"It's not a question of your strength," he said. "That was the Master of Grimoire Heart. At least, that's my read on who was issuing the warning." He paused, letting that land. "The man runs the most powerful Dark Guild operating right now. His strength is exactly what you'd expect that to mean. He's ahead of Makarov, from what I could feel, though by how much I couldn't say precisely."

He looked out over the ruins around them.

"If I'd committed to fighting him directly, I could have kept everyone here safe. But I couldn't have done that and also gotten to the survivors in time. The people buried in this wreckage were the priority. So I let them go and we focus on this."

Both of them worked through it. The logic was clean and they knew it, and having a concrete reason that had nothing to do with capability was different from just being told not to feel bad. The tension in their postures shifted into something more purposeful.

Erza looked at the rubble spreading out in every direction around them and then back at Noah.

"Grimoire Heart," she said slowly. "I knew I recognized that mark. The pattern on the blond one's chest. I couldn't place it before." Something moved through her expression. "So that's what they are."

"Now you know what you'll be dealing with more of at S-Class level," Noah said. He wasn't softening it. There was no useful version of this information that came softened. "Most Dark Guilds you'll encounter on S-rank requests are operating at a different scale than this. Theft, extortion, violation of Council regulations. Actual atrocities, mass killing, deliberately targeting civilian populations, that's rarer. It tends to be the major guilds. The ones who have been operating long enough and with enough resources to believe they're untouchable."

Ultear had moved up beside Erza, and the look on her face was the particular look of someone who had been on the inside of something like this and was explaining it from that position.

"The Council can't locate them. They never could. I spent years looking for their subordinate guilds, and even those organizations didn't know where their own headquarters were. The information gets compartmentalized deliberately, each layer only knowing enough to receive orders and pass resources upward."

"I ran into the same thing," Noah said.

Both of them looked at him.

"When I was working through information about the dark side, years back, I went through a number of those subordinate guilds. Took down quite a few of them. Found connections to Grimoire Heart affiliates and other major organizations, but the trail always stopped at the same point. The people on the ground genuinely had no idea where the top was."

A silence opened up. Erza was looking at him with an expression that was working through something, and Ultear had gone very still in a way that meant she was doing the same calculation and arriving at the same place.

"You did this because of us," Erza said. It wasn't quite a question.

Noah looked at her.

"One because of you," he said. "The Black Magic Cult. One because of Sorano and Angel. Others because the information was useful and the opportunity was there." He kept his voice matter of fact. "I needed to understand the dark side. That was the practical route."

"Were you hurt?" Erza asked.

Ultear asked the same question at the same moment, the words overlapping, both of their voices carrying the same tight quality.

They were both looking at him. Not with the assessment they used during training or combat evaluation. Something more personal than that, something that showed through the practical exterior they both maintained most of the time.

Erza had almost reached toward him before she caught herself.

Noah understood, if he took a moment to look at it from the outside, why the question had that weight. He had been ten years old when most of that had happened. Ten years old, moving through Dark Guild operations alone, without backup, making judgment calls about when to engage and when to disappear. Ultear knew he'd handled Deliora at that age. But Dark Guild magic was diverse and unpredictable, and Grimoire Heart's members were not the low-tier variety. Zancrow and Kawazu, who had taken a direct hit from Noah today and survived it, were the level they were dealing with. Imagining a ten-year-old encountering something like that was not a comfortable image.

"Nothing landed," Noah said. "Instant movement was already in place. If the situation shifted against me, I was already moving. And I'd blocked information transmission beforehand, so nobody above them knew it was happening." He paused. "I also wasn't running into the top-tier personnel. The major guilds don't care much about their satellite organizations. Subordinate guilds get replaced. There's always more. So their heavy hitters were occupied with other things."

He didn't expand on the second part of that. The fact that he'd known enough to be careful, that he had never once treated those operations as anything other than high-risk activities requiring precise planning and a clean exit route, was information worth keeping. Maintaining the people around him at a healthy level of vigilance about danger was useful. Telling them he'd been in more control of those situations than the surface story suggested would undercut that.

"That's good," Erza said. The relief in her voice was audible.

Ultear let out a slow breath.

They both looked at him with expressions that were carrying more in them than relief, something he could see clearly but couldn't entirely parse. The layers were too many.

"Wait," Ultear said, something surfacing in her expression. "You stopped hiding later. You went public with it. That was deliberate."

"Two specific reasons," Noah said. "Funding, once. Sorano, once. But more broadly, the Council relationship was worth having openly. If we're connected to them through goodwill and established cooperation, Fairy Tail has fewer problems at the institutional level. Someone in those halls who will speak on the guild's behalf when it's needed. That's worth more than staying invisible."

Erza and the others were quiet for a moment, absorbing this.

"There have been so many fewer complaints about the guild in recent years," Erza said slowly. "I heard that from some of the older members. They said it used to be much worse." She looked at Noah. "That was you."

He didn't confirm or deny it. The fact stood for itself.

"What about her?"

Erza's attention had moved, her eyes dropping to the small figure standing beside her. The pink-haired girl had not let go of Erza's clothes since the moment Erza had pulled her out of the wreckage. She had stayed close through the warning from Grimoire Heart's master, through the chaos of Noah's exchange with the three across the crater, through all of it. She was still there now, one hand wound tight in the fabric of Erza's clothing, watching everything around her with eyes that were alert and frightened in equal measure.

The Council personnel who had arrived on scene had tried to approach her earlier. She'd shut down completely, wouldn't answer questions, wouldn't respond to any of it. The moment Erza or one of the others spoke to her, something in her posture changed. Small, but visible.

"She's been with us since we found her," Erza said. "She won't talk to anyone else."

Noah looked at the girl. She met his eyes briefly and looked away.

He crouched down to put himself closer to her level.

Meanwhile, all around them, the work continued.

After Noah had notified the Council from the field, the response had been swift and, given the nature of what they were responding to, appropriately scaled. Grimoire Heart attacking a populated city, bringing it to rubble, killing a significant portion of its residents, was not a routine incident. Personnel had been dispatched quickly, and when the lead official arrived and saw the scope of what had happened, the request for additional support went out immediately.

Before any of them had arrived, Noah had already been moving through the rubble with his senses extended, finding the people whose vital signs were weakest and fading, getting to them first. The ones who couldn't wait for the organized search. Each one he reached he passed to Wendy, who had been working steadily since they'd established a clear area, or treated himself with what he had available.

Once the Council teams were on the ground, the three of them shifted to support roles, working alongside the organized effort, guiding search teams to locations Noah had already identified, moving debris that would have taken teams much longer without assistance. The efficiency improvement was significant enough that the lead official had pulled Noah aside twice to express it.

Noah had redirected both conversations back to the work.

When the last confirmed survivor had been located and the search transitioned into its final documentation phase, Erza had stepped back and looked at what remained of the city spread out around her. The scale of it, taken in all at once rather than piece by piece, was a different experience than moving through it had been.

"Do all Dark Guilds operate like this?" she'd asked, and her voice had something in it that went past anger into the colder territory past it.

Ultear had answered first, explaining the spectrum. Most of them were not this. Most of them were not capable of this, and most of those that were capable of it weren't willing to absorb the consequences. What they were looking at was what it looked like when a guild had been operating long enough and with enough impunity that they had stopped calculating consequences at all.

The girl stayed close to Erza through all of it.

Noah watched her and thought about what came next.
