At this moment, Captain America had some personal bias—he admitted it—but he wasn't stopping Tony Stark purely out of selfishness. This was the reasoning he stood by.
If Bucky, the Winter Soldier, had killed Howard and Maria Stark while fully conscious and in control, Cap would have shown no mercy.
But now, as he said, Bucky only acted under control. If they ended up killing each other, it would just be playing into someone else's hands—and he absolutely would not agree to that.
"Captain, if you dare stand in my way, I won't show any mercy either," Tony Stark said.
"Tony, think about it—this isn't just about you. It's also about Wanda, the Scarlet Witch, and Pietro, Quicksilver. Your products killed their parents, which led them to hate you. Hydra brainwashed them, and they stood against the Avengers. Isn't that basically the same as what's happening with you now?" Steve Rogers quickly explained. "Your company's products—even if they weren't sold through official channels—ended up in the wrong hands and killed their parents. To them, you're the one who killed their parents. But we're adults; we can see through this, right? The people controlling these weapons—or the forces behind them—are the real culprits."
Tony paused, slightly calmer. Though still consumed by anger over his parents' death, he wasn't completely irrational.
He knew his company hadn't sold those weapons; as an American arms manufacturer, they wouldn't have reached Eastern Europe, where Wanda and Pietro's parents were killed—Sokovia, Russian territory.
So if their parents were still killed, there was only one possibility: someone had sold the weapons secretly.
Either Obadiah had secretly sold them years ago, hiding it from him to make a profit, or the military had done so to support certain armed groups.
He had no illusions about the ethics of the U.S. military—they had none. Basically, they were capable of anything, a gathering place for scum and villains.
Under normal procedures, this wasn't his responsibility—but people still used it as a reason to hate him.
Could he claim innocence? Yes.
Would they believe him? Probably not.
Just like he couldn't let Bucky go, no matter the reasoning. From a rational standpoint, Bucky wasn't the mastermind—Hydra was—but Tony's emotions were at their peak. He didn't care about reason, didn't care about logic.
Right now, he wasn't thinking clearly.
Seeing Tony's expression calm slightly, Steve let out a sigh of relief. Thankfully, they hadn't found Bucky yet; otherwise, a fight would have broken out immediately.
Wanda and Pietro's tragedy acted as a buffer, easing Tony's anger slightly—enough for him to consider what was right.
Indeed, Tony calmed down a bit. From a rational perspective, he could think things through—but right now, anger ruled. Thinking? Reasoning? Screw that. He just wanted to unleash his fury.
Years of guilt for not honoring his parents, years of storms and struggles—all transformed into boundless rage.
"Captain, don't tell me anything now. I just ask you—whose side are you on?" Tony shouted.
"Sorry, Tony. You're too angry right now. I don't want to escalate this," Steve replied, shaking his head.
"Good. You better protect him well. Don't let me find him," Tony snapped, his anger burning.
No one else knew how to intervene—both sides had reason.
For Cap, Bucky's actions were partly justified: he was manipulated, brainwashed by Hydra. Not his fault.
For Tony, no matter the reasoning, Bucky was the killer of his parents.
Nick Fury groaned. Reading Lin Feng's diary, he never expected to see the Avengers fracture—preemptively, no less.
Great. With Loki and the Chitauri invasions looming, they might as well surrender. Fury now understood the saying: when hearts scatter, leadership becomes impossible.
The conflict between Tony and Steve was now explosive. Tony would not let go of his parents' killer.
No matter how noble he appeared before, rationality and morality applied only when personal stakes weren't involved. Once it touched him personally, all rules changed.
Fury felt exasperated. Others couldn't intervene—the issue was too sensitive. Reason aside, some conflicts couldn't simply be resolved logically.
In Hydra's Sokovian base, Wanda and Pietro realized they were being drawn into this again, surprised.
They had initially hated Tony, but later realized their anger had been misdirected.
Once Tony learned the truth, he'd face a similar choice: confront the real killer of his parents or vent anger on a tool.
They had faced such choices clearly—and by the time they understood, their parents had been gone for a long time, and the anger had faded.
For Tony, however, the moment he knew, anger surged immediately. He couldn't speak calmly without venting first.
In Asgard, Odin read the diary and looked at his son.
Life might get difficult for him, balancing between two teammates.
The Avengers' split was far more complicated than he had thought—not just about the Sokovia Accords, ideology, or two heads clashing.
Now it also involved a major personal vendetta—the murder of parents. No wonder it was messy.
During the online SHIELD meeting, the atmosphere was tense. If it had been offline, a fight might have broken out.
After a brief silence, the diary added new content and a video:
[Baron Zemo could manipulate the entire Avengers team alone—not through brute strength, but because internal fractures were so deep. Each hero's self-righteousness created openings. A superhero team resolving conflicts is also part of the spectacle. (Dog Head)]
Baron Zemo?
The name flashed in everyone's minds, but they had no memory of it.
A baron? Perhaps a leftover noble from a feudal country—like small Britain and Northern Ireland?
Still, nothing was clear. They clicked to view more, trying to ease the tension.
The video showed endless ocean, storm clouds covering the sky, a helicopter cutting through the clouds.
"After Barnes was captured, the task force immediately got a psychiatrist!"
"Within an hour, Dr. Theo Brüsser from Geneva arrived to see him!"
Tony frowned as he reviewed the data on his phone. He sensed he'd been fooled.
"Did you do facial recognition?" Tony asked.
The screen zoomed in. Everyone saw the man in the photo.
This was likely the Baron Zemo they had been discussing.
"Who do you think I am?" Friday interjected.
Tony paused. "I thought it was a red-haired woman!"
Who else? Of course, Black Widow.
"You must be thinking of someone else," Friday teased.
"Of course!" Tony nodded.
The screen revealed the information everyone wanted:
"The so-called doctor is actually Colonel Helmut Zemo," Friday explained.
The team's confusion eased somewhat. So, Baron Zemo was this person—but what grudge did he have against the Avengers? Why incite civil war?
He needed information from Bucky about the other Winter Soldiers, suggesting he wasn't from Hydra internally. He must have learned Hydra's secrets elsewhere and designed this plan.
His true goal was to use the Winter Soldier to destabilize the world.
