Chapter 175 - The Winter Soldier Squad Really Exists! The Mastermind Appears!

Of course, this was everyone's speculation at first, but Friday immediately provided more information.

"From the Sokovia Intelligence Department. Zemo is the commander of Sokovia's secret assassination squad, the Echo Scorpion Squad!"

A colonel from Sokovia's intelligence department!

Sokovia—a place they all knew well. Wanda and Quicksilver Pietro were from Sokovia, so what exactly had happened there?

Everyone wasn't stupid; they could naturally piece together a lot from the connections. Something extremely significant must have happened back then, which triggered the subsequent chain of events.

Including that accord, and why the commander of Sokovia's special forces would come after them—it all had a reason.

Of course, while Zemo had official credentials, he clearly wasn't acting on behalf of the Sokovian government—they would never dare target the Avengers directly.

One could even say, in this world, very few nations would dare to defy the U.S., even secretly. You could count them on one hand.

So, Colonel Zemo targeting them was likely for revenge. A man willing to challenge the Avengers probably lost someone close to him, giving him that extraordinary courage.

Everyone's mood immediately turned heavy. They didn't know exactly what had happened in Sokovia, but there was no doubt—it had been something earth-shattering.

It likely caused a massive crisis and resulted in deaths.

At this moment, Tony Stark finally understood why his future self would choose to sign such an accord.

It appeared to restrain superheroes, but even while saving lives, many heroes acted recklessly. How many casualties could that recklessness cause?

On screen, Tony Stark continued to ask, "What about the real Bucky Barnes?"

Friday replied, "He was found dead in a hotel room in Berlin. The police also found a wig and facial prosthetics in the room, used to simulate James Buchanan Barnes' features."

"Damn it!" Tony Stark realized he'd been deceived.

Seeing this, the people off-screen recalled the Avengers' Civil War. Suddenly, everything connected.

Clearly, Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, had been captured. During this process, Colonel Zemo somehow gained control over the Winter Soldier—not only learning his whereabouts but also directing him to carry out massive destruction.

He forced the authorities to pursue him, which in turn directly led to the Avengers' split.

Under official pressure, Tony Stark had no choice but to capture him, while Captain Steve Rogers naturally could not watch his close friend be taken away.

And thus, the opposition began.

At this stage, it was only the initial split of the Avengers. Later, Tony Stark would also learn the truth about his parents' death.

Otherwise, there would be no explanation for why, in subsequent footage, Rogers' recordings included explanations about Tony's parents' deaths.

Everything had a traceable path; all the clues connected seamlessly.

At the same time, the group felt a sense of fear, realizing their own vulnerabilities.

Colonel Zemo was just an ordinary man. Even if he commanded a special forces unit, it still wasn't particularly threatening. Yet this man, using simple strategies and insight into human nature, had effortlessly dismantled the Avengers.

It became apparent that Lin Feng might have been right—the Avengers were more fragile than they seemed. While external forces might never defeat them, even the strongest fortress could fall from within.

The Avengers, at that moment, were such a fortress. When facing external enemies—whether the massive invasion by the Chitauri or Thanos—they fought with all their might.

Yet they fell due to internal strife. Internal problems proved far more dangerous than any external foe.

Meanwhile, on screen, Tony Stark realized his mistake. He quickly had Friday send this information to Secretary Ross, intending to clear Captain Rogers and Bucky Barnes of suspicion.

Clearly, he still cared deeply for Rogers—their bond was genuine.

Yet friendships had levels, and Tony Stark was clearly not first-tier.

The scene shifted. At a Hydra base in Siberia, a figure arrived first. Everyone focused and saw it was none other than Colonel Zemo, the one who had leaked the intelligence earlier.

At this point, everyone confirmed that Captain Rogers' concern was justified—there really was a group of terrifying super soldiers.

Following his movements, they watched him enter a file archive room to retrieve a document, then move to an empty hall. With the beam of his flashlight, they finally saw a group of Winter Soldiers frozen in a refrigerated chamber.

Off-screen, everyone confirmed what Bucky Barnes had said was true. More importantly, they understood why Bucky had remained in peak condition for seventy years, showing no signs of aging.

The principle was the same as for Steve Rogers.

Steve Rogers had been frozen for seventy years; Bucky's freezing period was shorter but similar, and the method was essentially the same.

The difference was that one was natural ice, the other an artificial cryogenic chamber.

Clearly, when not on missions, these Winter Soldiers were frozen, only to be reactivated when needed.

This also confirmed their earlier suspicion: even for Hydra, mass-producing Winter Soldiers was impossible. There must have been limitations—cost, personnel, or technology.

In short, producing a batch required enormous resources, and Hydra wouldn't allow them to die naturally.

"I think I understand now! This is the elite squad Hydra commanded that Bucky mentioned, and Baron Zemo must want to find them and use them for revenge!" Hawkeye Barton said. "Because relying on his own strength alone, he couldn't possibly exact revenge on us. Even splitting the Avengers through manipulation wouldn't achieve his true goal."

Everyone nodded, realizing the same. Tony Stark, on screen, had truly misunderstood Captain Rogers. The super soldiers Rogers spoke of weren't lies to protect Bucky—they were real!

And that meant this was the problem they were about to face. Zemo's actions likely occurred after Hydra's fall. If they dealt with Hydra carelessly, these Winter Soldiers could be unleashed, creating an even bigger problem.

Tony Stark's expression was grave; on that other timeline, he was about to go to war with Captain Rogers.

The real reason was that Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, had killed his parents.

Whether or not Hydra had a super soldier squad didn't matter.

He wanted revenge.

On screen, an autonomous helicopter flew mid-air, and a broadcast came from inside the cabin.

"This is the Isle Prison Control Center. You may land, Mr. Stark."

Everyone then saw a massive, modern prison built in the middle of the ocean, like a solitary island.

"Wow, this prison can't possibly be for ordinary criminals!" Hawkeye Barton said. "This facility is for people like us!"

Such a high-tech prison wouldn't be necessary for ordinary humans, especially in the U.S., where prisons are often a business—outsourced, profiting from the poor.

A super-prison like this in the middle of the ocean could only be for superheroes or supervillains.

Soon, the visuals confirmed Barton's guess.

The helicopter landed, and Tony Stark stepped out, meeting Secretary Ross, who had been waiting.

"Received the files? Let's start facial recognition scanning on Zemo!" Stark was eager to prove Captain Rogers' innocence, correcting his earlier mistake of not listening to Rogers' explanation.

"After causing so much trouble in Leipzig, you really think I'd listen to you?" Secretary Ross said coldly. "Consider yourself lucky you're not locked up here!"

Clearly, he was displeased with Stark's failure to contain Rogers, even causing a commotion at the airport.

If not for Stark being part of the ruling class, he would have been inside already.

To Ross, the government had shown extraordinary patience with the Avengers, not pursuing them even after massive destruction and city-scale disasters. That was mercy enough.

And how did the Avengers repay them?

By repeatedly provoking and defying authority.
