Chapter 37 - Between the Lights

The morning sunlight slipped through the blinds, painting soft stripes across the bed where Amara lay. Daniel's arm was draped around her waist, his chest rising and falling against her back in an even rhythm. For a moment, she just stayed there, letting herself soak in the quiet comfort of his presence.

It felt almost dangerous, how safe she felt in his arms.

When he stirred, his lips brushed against her hair. "You're awake."

She smiled, rolling to face him. "I didn't want to move. It's too peaceful."

Daniel tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear, his gaze lingering on her like she was the only thing in the world worth seeing. "Then stay. We don't have to rush anywhere."

For a while, they didn't. They lay tangled together, whispering small nothings. Amara teased him about his terrible dancing, and he countered with how her cooking could barely be called edible. They laughed until their stomachs ached, the kind of laughter that pushed shadows away, if only for a little while.

Yet beneath the playfulness, something in Amara's chest tightened. Every time Daniel pulled her closer, every time she caught the softness in his eyes, she couldn't shake the thought: What if this is too good to last?

Later, over coffee, Daniel reached across the table and laced their fingers together. "You look like you're miles away," he said gently.

She hesitated. "I just… sometimes I wonder how long this can last. Us, like this. Without anything getting in the way."

His thumb brushed over her knuckles, steady, grounding. "Amara, I don't care what tries to come between us. I'll fight it. Always."

Her heart swelled, but unease lingered like a shadow at the edge of her thoughts. She wanted to believe him, fully and without fear, yet the memory of Chike's eyes—cold, unyielding—still haunted her.

Daniel must have sensed it, because he leaned closer. "Hey," he murmured, voice low but certain, "you don't have to carry everything alone anymore. I'm here. You hear me?"

She nodded, blinking fast to keep her emotions from spilling over. She leaned across the table, kissing him softly, grateful and terrified all at once.

For now, love wrapped around them like armor. But outside their walls, something darker stirred—a shadow that hadn't forgotten her, a storm that hadn't yet broken.

And though Amara didn't know it yet, the peace they held onto so tightly was already beginning to crack.
