"Do you know this thing?" Natasha asked curiously after hearing Rogers' murmur.
Rogers explained, "Arnim Zola was a German scientist who worked for Red Skull. He's been dead for many years."
After hearing Rogers' explanation, Natasha hadn't said anything when Zola on the computer had already corrected him. "First of all, to correct the first point, I am Swiss."
"Secondly, look around you. I am more alive than ever."
"In 1972, I was diagnosed with a terminal illness, incurable. Science could no longer save my body, but my brain was still worth saving and preserving."
"So my brain became data and was stored in a 200,000-foot-long database."
"You are now standing in my brain."
Hearing Dr. Zola's introduction, Meng Ran seemed to understand something. This Zola was the "real AI," directly collecting all his brain data into a database.
However, what kind of special fetish did these HYDRA people have? Zola started reporting names and birthdates as soon as he saw someone.
Red Skull, who was exiled to the Soul Stone's location, also reported the names of people's fathers as soon as he met them.
Did they have some special love for paternity tests and identity verification?
Seeing Zola's current state, Meng Ran also understood what kind of existence the monster's AI that had been fighting with Little White and Mary Jane was.
He estimated that the monster's headquarters should also have an AI similar to Zola controlling their information defense system.
Or, that AI system was Zola. After all, after becoming an AI, he wouldn't be as limited as a real person.
He could completely split himself into several parts, respectively helping HYDRA and the monster handle affairs.
Just like Little White, who could handle affairs at the base and also assist Meng Ran and the others in processing and analyzing problems during their missions.
"So, how did you get here?" Rogers was still very puzzled about Zola's existence.
Zola didn't evade his question, but answered directly, "I was invited here."
Natasha also said thoughtfully after hearing Zola's words, "It was Operation Paperclip after the end of World War II. S.H.I.E.L.D. recruited many German scientists with strategic value."
"That's right." Zola also took over Natasha's words and continued, "They thought I could help their cause, and I did. But at the same time, I also helped my own."
"Cut off one head, and two new ones will grow, Captain. You don't really think the HYDRA organization died with Red Skull, do you?"
Rogers was incredulous when he heard Zola's words. Seeing his expression, Zola very straightforwardly flashed images on a small screen beside him, further proving his words.
Meng Ran felt a little strange after seeing Zola's behavior. Why would an artificial intelligence be so kind as to tell them these hidden things? He clearly had no obligation to answer, right? He turned to look at Rogers and Natasha. The two of them seemed to have been immersed in the story Zola was telling, and didn't notice anything amiss.
Meng Ran guessed that Zola was probably stalling for time, but he didn't say anything. He listened to Zola's account without showing any emotion, since he himself didn't know these things very well.
With his current strength, he didn't care what tricks Zola had up his sleeve. This was the confidence that came with overwhelming power.
"The original idea behind HYDRA was that freedom shouldn't be left in the hands of humans, but what we didn't realize at the time was that if you try to take away people's freedom, they will resist."
"War taught us many things, and we learned that freedom could only be given up by people themselves, voluntarily."
"After the war ended, S.H.I.E.L.D. was established. They recruited me and some other people using Operation Paperclip."
"Thus, the new HYDRA grew up, becoming a beautiful parasite that grew within S.H.I.E.L.D., hidden in the shadows of S.H.I.E.L.D., unknown to anyone."
"For the past 70 years, HYDRA has been secretly advocating for various crises, benefiting from the wars."
"When they wouldn't cooperate, we changed history, letting history develop as scheduled according to our plans."
"You can't keep doing this forever; someone will stop you," Natasha said, her brow furrowed.
"You're right. That's why accidents often happen, like Howard Stark's death, and Nick Fury's, too," Arnim Zola said, displaying their photos on the screen.
"Thanks to HYDRA's efforts, the people in this chaotic world are finally starting to choose security over freedom."
"Once our purification program is complete, a new world order belonging to HYDRA will arrive."
"I'm sorry, Captain, but we've won in the end. Your life and death are equally worthless; your sacrifice has no meaning."
Hearing this, Rogers could no longer suppress his inner rage. He angrily swung his fist at the largest screen.
Crack! Along with the sound of shattering glass, the largest screen was smashed into a spiderweb of cracks by Rogers's punch.
"What exactly is in that USB drive?" Rogers furiously questioned Zola.
"Project Insight requires insight, so I wrote an algorithm to increase insight, to complete this project." Arnim Zola still spoke in an uneven voice, as if devoid of emotion.
"What project? What exactly is he?" Natasha continued to question after hearing Dr. Zola's response.
"Well, the answer to this question is very attractive, but unfortunately, I can't tell the answer to a few dead people."
Dr. Zola's electronically synthesized voice was cold and indifferent, just like the pronouncement of death.
As his voice fell, the thick door behind them quickly closed.
Rogers immediately reacted upon hearing the sound, instantly throwing out the circular shield in his hand, trying to wedge the closing door open.
Unfortunately, although his movements were fast, the door closed faster. His circular shield only hit the closed door, and then bounced back.
At the same time, Natasha took out the phone she had in her pocket.
Watching the red dot on the screen getting closer and closer, her voice trembled slightly as she said, "There's a flying object heading towards us. It's a short-range ballistic missile. We have at most 30 seconds."
