I gasped and scrambled up, immediately turning to him.


"That's right! Eric—are you hurt? Are you okay? Did you break anything?" My voice came out shaky, panic crawling up my throat.


Eric groaned softly but managed to sit up, forcing a crooked smile. "I'm fine. Looks like we landed on soft dirt and branches. Grass too. Could've been way worse."


Relief slammed into me so hard my knees almost gave out.


"We are never doing this again," I said, half-laughing, half-crying. My chest felt tight, emotions piling up all at once.


"But what about you?" he asked, eyes searching my face.


"Ah… yeah, I'm fine," I said automatically.


Something warm trickled down the side of my head, sliding past my temple and cheek.
