Chapter 37 – Flames Between Hearts
The roar of the amphitheater still echoed in Chen Yue's ears long after the trial had ended.
Nobles shouted, adventurers cheered, and enemies whispered. But Chen Yue ignored it all. His flame still burned too fiercely, his dantian swollen with the raw power of the Ancestral Fragment. It pulsed in his core like a newborn sun, both exhilarating and unbearably heavy.
Ayara was the first to reach him. She darted from the healer's circle, her sapphire robe flying behind her. Without hesitation, she threw her arms around him.
"Yue—" her voice cracked, equal parts relief and fury. "Do you have any idea what you just did?"
He chuckled weakly, steadying her with one arm. "Won?"
"Nearly burned yourself alive!" she shot back, gripping his cloak as though he might vanish.
Velira joined them a moment later, walking slower, her crimson eyes studying him with that same mixture of exasperation and respect. She stopped close enough that the heat of her aura brushed his skin.
"You're a fool," she said flatly. "But… a victorious fool."

Whispers in the Stands
Around them, chaos spread.
The Pyre family nobles argued furiously, some demanding Chen Yue's arrest, others urging restraint after the Relic itself had chosen him.
Emissaries from distant kingdoms sent hurried runners with sealed messages. Every faction wanted the cultivator now—the outsider who wielded an ancient flame no mana-user could match.
And high above, in the shadowed balconies, Nyxara leaned lazily against a pillar, a smirk curling her lips. Her snake-like eyes gleamed with satisfaction.
"So, the Relic has chosen," she whispered to herself. "The game board just caught fire."

After the Arena
That night, the adventurers' lodge overflowed with celebration. Music blared, mugs clashed, and men and women sang drunkenly of the "Cultivator Champion."
But Chen Yue, Ayara, and Velira slipped away to a quiet upper room.
The air there was still, heavy with the aftertaste of battle. Chen Yue collapsed against the wall, exhaling slowly.
"Every breath feels… different," he muttered. "The flame's deeper. Wilder. Like it wants to consume me."
Velira crossed her arms, leaning against the window. "That's because it does. You've bound an artifact meant for sovereigns. You'll have to bend it—or it'll bend you."
Ayara knelt beside him, her healing magic shimmering faintly as her hand rested against his chest. The warmth of her touch soothed the restless fire within him.
"Then we'll bend it together," she said softly. "Your flame isn't yours alone. It's ours."

The Resonance Deepens
The bond threads between them pulsed—brighter now, more alive. Where once they had been whispers of warmth, now they beat like living hearts.
Chen Yue felt Ayara's calm determination flow into him, cooling the restless flame. Velira's iron will pressed against his, hard but steady, anchoring him.
And in return, he gave them his strength.
The resonance deepened.
Ayara gasped softly, her cheeks flushing. "It's… stronger than before. Like my magic sings with your flame."
Velira's crimson eyes softened despite herself. "Tch. I can feel your heartbeat. Both of you. This is absurd."
Chen Yue managed a smile. "Absurd or not… it's real. And it's only going to grow stronger."
---
Between Trust and Fear
But strength brought fear as well.
Ayara hesitated, her hand lingering on his chest. "Yue… what if it's too much? What if this Relic devours you, and through you—us?"
Velira looked away, her jaw tight. For all her bravado, doubt flickered in her eyes too.
Chen Yue took both their hands, one in each of his. His voice was steady. "Then you'll stop me. That's why I chose this path—not to walk alone, but with you."
The bond threads flared, answering his words.
Ayara's eyes shimmered with tears, though she smiled. Velira scowled, but didn't pull her hand away.
---
Soft Flames
For a time, they simply sat together, the three of them bound in silence.
The noise of the revel below drifted faintly through the floorboards—songs of victory, laughter, clattering mugs. But here, in this small chamber, there was only warmth.
Ayara leaned against Chen Yue's shoulder, her breath steady. Velira, after a long pause, sat on his other side, close enough that their arms brushed.
"Don't think this means I've accepted you completely," Velira muttered.
Chen Yue smirked. "Of course not."
But when he closed his eyes, he felt it—their flames resonating with his. Three hearts beating as one.

The Faction Moves
Far from the warmth of that room, the Pyre Council gathered in secret chambers.
Kaelen slammed his fist on the table, sparks leaping from his gauntlet. "He stole the Relic! That flame should be ours!"
An elder raised a trembling hand. "The Relic chose him. To defy that is to defy the ancient law."
"Then we will defy it!" Kaelen roared. "Better that than let an outsider claim Emberhold's birthright!"
Dark whispers spread among the councilors. Assassins, poison, conspiracies—all weighed against the risk of openly defying the Relic's judgment.
And in the shadows beyond the chamber, Nyxara listened, her smile widening. "Yes… rage against him. Break yourselves on his flame. All the sooner my true prey will awaken."
