Chapter 38 - CHAPTER 38 –THE FLAME THAT HUNGERS

Chapter 38 – The Flame That Hungers

The lodge was quiet at dawn. Celebration had burned itself into silence, leaving only the smell of spilled ale and the soft snores of exhausted adventurers.

Chen Yue sat cross-legged in the upper chamber, bare-chested, sweat dripping down his back. The Relic's flame pulsed inside him, searing and alive.

[Flame Sovereign's Embryo: Stage One – Incomplete.]

[Warning: Host flame unstable. Integration required.]

The System's voice was cold and merciless.

He inhaled deeply, drawing in Qi. The Voidfire within him flared, weaving with the Relic's golden-violet energy. But the moment they touched, the Relic lashed out—wild, ravenous. It devoured his Qi like a beast starving for centuries.

Chen Yue grimaced, his meridians straining. "So… you're not just power. You're hunger."

The First Lesson

He focused on the bonds. Threads of warmth flickered in his mind—Ayara's steady calm, Velira's iron resolve. He channeled their resonance into the storm inside him.

The wild flame slowed, tempered by their presence. For the first time, he shaped it into form.

A small flame floated above his palm, golden-violet edged with silver. It hissed and twisted like a living thing, but it was his.

Chen Yue exhaled. "Not conquered… but guided. That's the way."

The System chimed softly:

[Bond resonance detected: Embryo partially stabilized.]

[Progress: 12%.]

Ayara's Fear

The door creaked. Ayara slipped inside, carrying a tray of herbal tea. Her sapphire robe was loose, her golden hair tied back hastily. She froze when she saw the flame in his hand.

"It's already… awake?" she whispered.

Chen Yue let the flame dissipate. "Barely. It resists control. If I force it, it'll consume me."

Ayara set the tray down, her hands trembling slightly. She sat beside him, closer than before, her warmth pressing against him.

"Yue… every time you reach higher, I feel it through the bond. The weight. The hunger." Her voice cracked. "What if it takes you from us? What if we can't stop it?"

Chen Yue reached for her hand, clasping it tightly. His voice was steady, but gentle. "Then you'll anchor me. That's what our bond is for. Not to share power, but to keep me human."

Ayara blinked, tears forming at the corners of her eyes. She leaned against him, whispering, "Then promise me… don't walk into the fire alone."

He brushed her hair back, pressing his forehead to hers. "I promise."

Velira's Secret Duel

Elsewhere in Emberhold's shadowed streets, Velira strode alone, her crimson cloak blending with the predawn mist.

Kaelen waited at the crossroads, clad in black armor, golden eyes burning with hate.

"You've chosen poorly, Velira," he growled. "Stand with that outsider, and you betray your blood."

Velira's hand hovered near her blade. "And you betray the Relic's will. It chose him. Are you so blind you'd defy even the flame of our ancestors?"

Kaelen's laugh was bitter. "The Relic was deceived. I'll tear its mistake apart with my own hands."

Steel sang as their blades clashed. Sparks flew, lighting the mist with fire.

Velira fought fiercely, her crimson eyes blazing, every strike fueled by loyalty she would never admit aloud. But Kaelen's strength was monstrous—each blow of his halberd cracked stone.

Their duel ended in stalemate, both bloodied, both breathing hard.

Kaelen spat to the ground. "This isn't over. When the council moves against him—you'll burn with him."

Velira sheathed her blade with a hiss. "Then let the flames come."

The Serpent's Whisper

High above the city, Nyxara stood on a balcony, watching dawn break over Emberhold. Her raven hair fluttered in the wind, her serpent eyes narrowed in amusement.

A shadowy servant bowed behind her. "The council sharpens its knives, mistress. They'll strike soon."

Nyxara smiled, her fangs glinting faintly. "Let them. Their fury will temper him—or break him. Either way, the Embryo grows closer to ripening."

Her eyes glowed, serpentine slits widening as she gazed toward Chen Yue's presence. "And when the hunger within him becomes unbearable… he will need someone who understands its true nature."

---

The Night Flame

That night, Chen Yue trained again, alone on the balcony. His Embryo flame writhed like a serpent, its hunger gnawing at his Qi. He pushed harder, sweat soaking his body, veins glowing faintly with violet fire.

Ayara watched from the doorway, unable to leave him. Velira returned bloodied but silent, leaning against the frame, eyes fixed on him.

For a moment, the three simply breathed the same air—their bond glowing faintly like threads of fire across the dark.

Chen Yue extinguished the flame, panting. He met their eyes.

"I can't tame this power without you," he admitted. "Not just your strength, but… you. If I falter, it's the two of you who'll keep me whole."

Ayara's lips parted, her face flushed but resolute. Velira looked away sharply, muttering, "Idiot. Don't say things that make me… believe too much."

But neither pulled away. Their bond pulsed brighter than ever.

And the Embryo flame, though still hungry, curled in his core—steady for now, no longer raging.
