Hospital - 11:00 AM
Teodoro comes back to Rio's room. He doesn't ask me to leave, but I understand. He needs time alone with his grandson.
I grab my purse and I walk out of the hospital without saying goodbye to anyone.
The sun is bright outside. Too bright. It hurts my eyes.
I get in my car and I just drive. I don't know where I'm going. I just need to move.
I drive through Mexico City and I think about everything.
About Rio's mother dying. About his father leaving. About the boy who decided love wasn't enough.
About the man he became.
And about me. About what I've accepted. About what I've put up with.
I think about the contract marriage. I think about Jennie. I think about the way Rio deliberately broke me down and then acted surprised when I broke.
I think about the party. About the perfect facade we created together. About how easy it was to lie to everyone including ourselves.
