Mission preparation
On the way home, Smart barely spoke.
Ren kept glancing at him through the rearview mirror, checking if he was okay.
And every time Smart noticed he was being watched, he forced a small smile—trying to show he was fine, even though he wasn't.
That night, he could hardly sleep.
His eyes felt heavy, yet he lay there staring at the ceiling, completely dazed.
A tight anxiety wrapped around his chest, almost stealing his breath.
He didn't want to move, didn't want to think—just lie there with his thoughts, feeling the weight of everything.
Meanwhile, Jin sat by the window in his apartment, a glass in hand, replaying every moment of what he had seen earlier like a short video repeating on a loop.
For the first time, he felt powerless—unable to act, unable to control anything.
Surrounded by alcohol and cigarettes he lit and put out without finishing, he wondered how he could ever get Smart by his side.
For a moment, he froze, whispering to himself:
— Why am I feeling like this? I don't even know that guy… what's wrong with me?
Then, in a burst of anger, he threw the glass to the floor.
---
Morning came, and Jin had barely slept.
He grabbed his phone and called Leo.
— Where are you? — Jin asked coldly.
— I'm sleeping… don't you see the time? Why wake people so early? The sun isn't even up… why should I be? — Leo murmured, half-asleep.
— Get up. We're going for a run.
— Ahh, no… not today… let me sleep…
But Jin hung up before he could finish.
He dressed quickly, wearing a sports outfit that highlighted every muscle.
Then he grabbed his car keys and headed to their usual running spot.
Leo arrived first, looking miserable: one eye half-open, the other barely functioning, his head pounding. Running was the last thing he wanted.
— Are you ready? — Jin called out, his tone promising a brutal workout.
— Not ready at all… what am I supposed to do with you… — Leo groaned, rubbing his temples. — We never run on Sundays. Why today?
— Stop complaining. Let's go, — Jin said, warming up.
— I'm dead… Leo thought, despair written on his face.
— Come on, fix that face—it looks awful, — Jin teased, tapping him on the head before jogging a few steps ahead.
— You think I won't make it! — Leo shouted, waking up a little as he ran after him.
---
After the run, they sat at a café near the park.
Morning sunlight warmed the place—except for Jin, whose expression remained cold.
— Why did you drag me out today? — Leo finally asked.
— Because I missed you, — Jin replied without looking at him.
— Right… sure. And I'm supposed to believe that?
— Why? What do you think the real reason is?
— I don't know… does it have anything to do with that guy from last night?
Jin turned, meeting his eyes.
Silence said everything.
— Ah… got it, — Leo said, smirking. — I think it's just a momentary obsession. It'll pass. Why overthink it? What if I find someone else for you—help you forget him?
Jin lit a cigarette, leaned back, and exhaled the smoke slowly into Leo's face.
— I told you last night: that guy is mine. Period. And you're going to help me, right?
Leo sighed.
— You saw him… he's nothing like the people you're usually with. Soft face, cute, angelic…
— The moment you get close, he'll panic and run. Have you thought of that?
Jin inhaled sharply, his voice low:
— That's exactly why I need your help. If it weren't for that, I'd just do things my way.
— You know me—I'll go to any length to get what I want.
— But this time… I need your help to make him mine without scaring him. He's different.
— My usual tricks won't work.
Leo's eyes widened.
— Did I hear that right? — he asked, shocked.
— Leo… don't push me, — Jin growled, hitting the table with his fist.
— Okay, okay… but why me? I'm not so different from you, — Leo joked.
— You are. Even that little difference matters.
— You have a more trustworthy face than I do. You can talk to him.
— He'll trust you quicker than me.
— You befriend him… then we'll find a way to get him closer to me.
— How does that sound?
— Hmm… I don't know…
— Don't know what?! It's a perfect plan, — Jin insisted.
— But he can't know we saw him at Light Pub.
— Everything has to look like coincidence, — Jin added with a sly tone, as if planning a whole drama.
Leo shook his head, amused and terrified at once.
— You know you're ruthless, right?
Jin smirked.
— Ruthless? That's nothing compared to what I'm planning.
Leo blinked, startled.
— Don't tell me… you're planning to act like a good guy first?
— No way. I won't believe it even if you say it.
Jin didn't answer.
And that silence… was the confirmation.
No one could ever guess what Jin was truly planning.
