Chapter 189: Battle of the Legends
Milotic brought Ryan to the surface. Ryan swam to shore and examined the Reveal Glass in his hand.
The Reveal Glass was oval-shaped, with five cloud patterns etched across its surface. The bottom displayed a white cloud representing ordinary clouds, while the top three depicted the legendary cloud trio—blue clouds for Thundurus's thunderclouds, green clouds for Tornadus's tornado clouds, and a yellowish-brown cloud at the very top representing Landorus's earth clouds.
As Ryan was examining the Reveal Glass, a Pokémon flew overhead. It noticed Ryan below, made a graceful turn in midair, and landed elegantly before him.
Ryan sensed something approaching and looked up to see a small, humanoid Pokémon standing in front of him. Ryan smiled and said, "Meloetta, hello."
Indeed, the Pokémon before him was Meloetta, the Mythical Pokémon from the Unova region. Its hair bore stripes resembling musical staff notation, and its slender arms connected to oval hands, forming the shape of a quarter note. Its pupilless eyes resembled whole musical notes. A jewel adorned its forehead, along with a black headdress shaped like a treble clef. These two treble clef-like structures overlapped, forming something similar to a wireless microphone commonly used by performers.
Meloetta looked at Ryan curiously, pointing at the Reveal Glass and chirping questioningly.
Ryan nodded and said, "I took it from the underwater ruins. I also helped the Swords of Justice escape."
Meloetta nodded and vocalized twice. Ryan said, "This belongs to me now. I won't be putting it back. Besides, even if I don't take it, someone else will eventually. Or how about this—let's have a battle. If you win, I'll return the Reveal Glass to the ruins. If you lose, I'll catch you, and you can't resist. Sound fair?"
Meloetta covered her mouth and giggled softly, thinking: This human is interesting—he actually wants to challenge a Legendary Pokémon.
Ryan thought to himself: Meloetta's dual forme ability has incredible potential for development. Catching it would be the perfect way to complete my team!
Both had their own motivations, so they quickly reached an agreement. Meloetta accepted Ryan's conditions—after all, from its perspective, a challenge from a human trainer would probably be over in an instant.
"Charizard, I choose you!" Ryan sent out his Charizard.
The moment Charizard materialized, countless flames erupted around its body, and it stared at Meloetta with fierce excitement gleaming in its eyes: A Legendary Pokémon! Finally, a real battle worthy of my strength!
Meloetta looked at Charizard and thought to itself: This Charizard has clearly crossed that threshold, entering the realm of Legendary Pokémon. This will be challenging.
"Charizard, Mega Evolve!" Ryan pressed the Charizardite X on his Mega Ring, and Charizard instantly transformed—Mega Charizard X appeared!
"Charizard, Fire Punch!" Ryan commanded.
Blue flames ignited around Charizard's claws as it flapped its wings and rushed toward Meloetta at high speed. Meloetta clapped its hands twice, and an ancient melody rang out. As Meloetta sang, a sound wave shot toward Charizard. Charizard crossed its claws defensively, blocking Meloetta's Relic Song.
In the midst of the melody, Meloetta transformed from its Aria Forme into its Pirouette Forme, gracefully leaping into position before launching a Low Sweep at Charizard.
Charizard swung its claws, unleashing two blazing arcs toward Meloetta. Meloetta kicked out mid-air, deflecting the fire blades with two sharp impacts while simultaneously releasing a deafening Hyper Voice that made Ryan instinctively cover his ears.
However, Ryan and Charizard shared a deep bond, and under Ryan's mental command, Charizard unleashed Heat Wave, creating a massive blue wall of fire in the air! The Heat Wave collided with the Hyper Voice, and the heat wave instantly shattered into fragments.
Ryan was stunned: "It can be used like that?!"
Sound itself is produced by vibration, and Meloetta's essence was sound—or rather, pure vibration. The powerful vibration wave carried by Hyper Voice shattered the entire Heat Wave attack, though it didn't cause much recoil damage to Meloetta itself.
Charizard was momentarily surprised but immediately fired a Flamethrower at Meloetta. Meloetta tried to redirect the Flamethrower with Psychic, but its psychic energy was quickly burned away by the intense heat essence carried within the flames. The Flamethrower struck Meloetta directly, sending it plummeting into the sea.
However, Charizard's flames contained burning essence, and even the seawater couldn't extinguish them immediately. The flames burned beneath the waves for several moments before gradually dying out. Meloetta burst from the water. The Flamethrower had dealt significant damage, and only by drawing on its own inner essence had it managed to sever the connection to the burning flames.
Meloetta's expression grew serious: This Charizard has already mastered Origin Power. Using ordinary moves will only lead to defeat. Now it's a battle of pure essence versus pure essence!
Meloetta began singing its ancient melody again, transforming from Pirouette Forme back to Aria Forme. Charizard swung its Fire Punch to block the damage from the Relic Song, but immediately afterward, Meloetta's enchanting voice filled the air with Sing, and Charizard instantly fell asleep.
Ryan grimaced: Instant sleep! Meloetta's singing techniques are terrifying!
Ryan immediately commanded Charizard to use Sleep Talk. Charizard got lucky—after using Sleep Talk, it unconsciously unleashed a Flamethrower at Meloetta. But Meloetta, now in Aria Forme with greatly increased Special Attack and Special Defense, countered with another powerful Hyper Voice that shattered the Flamethrower completely.
Ryan frowned and used their bond connection to forcefully wake Charizard with all his mental strength. Upon waking, Charizard roared furiously, and its next Flamethrower, ignoring the damage from Hyper Voice, slammed directly into Meloetta.
Meloetta cried out in pain, knocked back by the Flamethrower's force. Seeing the opening, Charizard refused to let it slip away. Enduring its own injuries, blue flames reformed around its claws. With a powerful beat of its wings, it charged toward Meloetta. Meloetta, still reeling from pain, cried out again, its voice growing increasingly shrill.
Ryan felt a sharp, piercing pain in his ears, then heard nothing more as warm liquid trickled down. Ryan sighed helplessly: Meloetta had been truly enraged now, unleashing its full power without restraint.
The blue flames on Charizard's claws vibrated violently as Charizard roared in fury. Its Fire Punch blazed even more intensely, growing larger and more ferocious. With one powerful motion, it grabbed Meloetta and slammed her onto the beach.
Meloetta's voice vanished instantly, replaced by a thunderous crash that sent sand exploding in all directions. Charizard dove downward, its flaming claws carving searing wounds across Meloetta's body.
Having delivered its final strike, Charizard's Mega Evolution immediately faded. Having lost its ability to battle, it fell from the sky and crashed onto the beach. Meloetta, too, had already lost consciousness within the impact crater.
"Go, Ultra Ball!" Ryan said, throwing his Ultra Ball toward Meloetta.
The ball struck the fallen Mythical Pokémon, drawing it inside in a flash of red light. Ryan held his breath as the ball rocked once, twice, three times...
