Chapter 102 - Superheroes in the Dark

'Click—'

The lights in the subway station went out instantly. What was once bright was now pitch black.

Of course, it wasn't total darkness—there were still glowing signs and fluorescent indicators that allowed a vague sense of the environment.

But the sudden transition from bright light to darkness temporarily blinded everyone.

"Baka!"

"Who's there?"

"Damn it!"

"The enemy is—ah—"

Shouts echoed through the dark, followed by the sounds of combat and screams.

Li Qingyuan tossed aside the stiffening body in his hands and pushed into the crowd, holding Wanda and Chen Ying.

He had intended to use dark magic to turn the hostage-taker into a low-level zombie, using it as a shield while detonating the explosives attached to the kidnappers.

Though low-level zombies were nearly wooden in strength, they could at least dampen the impact of submachine gun bullets, preventing serious harm.

With his 15-point constitution, Li Qingyuan knew that unless hit directly in the head, he was relatively safe.

The kidnappers had placed explosives around the hostages, forming a loose perimeter. Most of the criminals were stationed along this boundary.

By triggering the explosives, Li Qingyuan could potentially eliminate most of the kidnappers in one strike.

Yes, some hostages might be caught in the blast—but that was unavoidable. These criminals had targeted his wards, showing a complete lack of sense.

Fortunately, a street-level hero—whose name he didn't know—reacted in time. The sudden blackout and the shouting indicated that the kidnappers were being severely dealt with.

Li Qingyuan safely brought Wanda and Chen Ying into the crowd before setting them down.

It wasn't that he didn't want to escape with them directly—it was too risky. The subway exit was about 100 meters away with no cover; any gunfire could endanger all three of them.

Blending into the crowd provided natural protection. Bullets would at most hit two or three people, and he could shield the two girls.

Besides, while the girls were only around ten years old, Chen Ying weighed over 50 pounds, and Wanda slightly more.

Carrying nearly 120 pounds while sprinting 100 meters? Li Qingyuan wasn't going to embarrass the mages!

Though the sudden darkness and screams caused some commotion, the hostages didn't panic. They curled up and crouched, playing "statue" as if instinctively knowing to stay low.

New Yorkers were psychologically tough when facing sudden crimes. The kidnappers were clearly there for revenge; as long as the hostages didn't act recklessly, they'd survive.

The gangsters, despite their boldness, followed some unspoken rules. They hadn't even fired a single shot yet, aside from placing explosives.

Even in New York, where gangs were rampant, serious casualties were rare.

As for the guy who targeted Wanda? He was a pressure pawn—meant to send a message to the police or other factions.

Gang rules allowed chaos, but not too much loss of life or property, lest the government retaliate.

A subway kidnapping with a few deaths? Easy to settle.A subway explosion killing hundreds? That would require a politician to take the blame.

Thus, the kidnappers dared not detonate explosives while the hero was actively fighting.

With Wanda and Chen Ying safe, Li Qingyuan could finally observe the scene.

With his 20-point spiritual power, his vision surpassed normal humans, allowing him to discern figures in dim light.

The kidnappers in tight suits were being overpowered. By the time Li Qingyuan arrived, most had already been taken out, leaving only a few stubbornly resisting.

Their efforts were futile. A burly man leapt in front of a knife-wielding thug, throwing a punch with an arm thicker than the attacker's thigh.

The sword shattered like glass. A massive fist slammed into the thug's head, sending him crashing into a subway pillar.

It was a display of sheer brute force, reminiscent of the ultimate techniques in martial arts, though the man relied solely on strength.

With his height and broad build, Li Qingyuan thought even a werewolf would be decapitated by such a blow.

"Done! Run!"

"Wait for me!"

Two clear voices echoed in the gradually calming station. Li Qingyuan saw several figures quickly ascend the emergency stairs.

A hum sounded.

The previously dark lights flickered back on.

The hostages, seeing the defeated kidnappers, instinctively ran toward the exits in an orderly fashion.

No one foolishly checked if the thugs were alive—Li Qingyuan felt reassured.

No wonder New York was the world's center; the citizens were well-trained.

From the moment the lights went out, barely three seconds had passed, yet almost all the hostages had evacuated.

No chaos, no stampedes—truly a testament to their experience.

"Don't be afraid. The bad guys have been taken down!"
