The night air pressed against Arin's skin, heavy and cold. His chest still rose and fell in sharp breaths as he tried to understand what had just happened. One moment he had been a shadow in the city, unnoticed and safe. The next, the world he had feared was standing in front of him. The woman was gone, but her words clung to him like chains.
They know you. They are coming.
He rubbed his hands together, watching the faint glow fade from his skin. The power still trembled inside him like a storm waiting to break. For years he had fought to keep it buried, but now it was loose, and someone had seen it.
The voices inside his mind did not calm. They overlapped, whispering in a dozen tones, each one carrying warning. Arin pressed his palms against his ears, as if that could shut them out. It did not. The sound was not in the air. It was in him.
You must not stay here.
He looked around the alley. The cracked walls seemed to lean closer, the shadows thicker than they should have been. Somewhere deeper in the city, a siren wailed, and tires screeched against the road. The world moved on, blind to what had just taken place. Blind to him.
But someone had found him. That meant others could too.
Arin pulled up his hood and hurried out of the alley. He kept his head low as he joined the slow trickle of people still walking the streets. Every face looked like a threat. Every corner felt like a trap. He moved quickly, weaving through the crowd until he reached a small park at the edge of the city center.
Here the noise was softer. Lamps cast long yellow circles across the path, and the trees swayed gently with the night breeze. Arin sat on a bench, his fingers clenched so tight that his knuckles turned white. He tried to steady his breathing. He tried to listen only to the steady beat of his heart.
But then, from across the path, he felt it.
A presence.
Someone was watching him.
He turned slowly. A figure leaned against the trunk of a tree not far away. A man, tall and broad-shouldered, with a calm face half hidden by the shadows. His clothes were simple, a plain shirt and dark trousers, nothing that would make him stand out. But his eyes caught the lamplight, glowing faintly, as if they carried their own fire.
Arin's body tensed. Another one.
The man stepped forward. His movements were slow, careful, as if he did not want to scare him.
You handled yourself well, he said, his voice deep but steady.
Arin rose from the bench, fists tight. Who are you.
The man stopped a few steps away. My name is Dev. And you, Arin, have just made yourself very visible.
Arin's heart skipped. The man knew his name. He staggered back, anger and fear mixing inside him. Stay away from me.
Dev shook his head. I am not your enemy. If I wanted to harm you, I would have done so already. I saw the fight in the alley. That woman will not be the last. You need to leave before they find you again.
The voices inside Arin surged. They whispered caution, they whispered trust, they whispered danger. The storm inside him only grew.
Why should I trust you, Arin asked, his voice harsh.
Because I know what you are carrying, Dev answered. And I know who is hunting you.
Arin froze. The woman had spoken about the whispers. Now this man spoke as if he knew even more. His head spun with questions, but fear chained his tongue.
Dev stepped closer. Long ago, powers were divided among many. Some guarded them, some abused them. The balance broke, and the world forgot. But the echoes remained, hidden in bloodlines, waiting. You, Arin, are one of the carriers. That woman was a hunter. She belongs to a faction that wants what lives inside you.
Arin shook his head. No. You are lying. I am cursed. Nothing more.
Dev's eyes softened. That is what you believe because you were left alone. But you are not cursed. You are chosen. And if you do not learn control, the voices will tear you apart before your enemies even reach you.
The words sank deep, pulling at the cracks inside Arin's resolve. For years he had believed he was broken, marked by madness. But now two strangers in one night had told him otherwise. Could it be true. Could there be others like him.
Arin lowered his voice. What do you want from me.
Dev glanced around, scanning the shadows. For now, only this. Stay alive. Come with me. I will take you to a place where you can learn. If you stay here, you will not survive the week.
The night pressed heavier around them. Arin's thoughts spun, torn between doubt and the sharp memory of the woman's burning eyes. He remembered her flame, the way the air bent to her will. If more like her were coming, could he face them alone.
The voices grew louder. Some urged him to run. Some told him to listen. Some cried out with warnings he could not understand.
Arin clenched his fists.
Before he could answer, a sudden crack split the night. The lamp above them flickered and burst, raining sparks. A wave of cold spread through the park. From the far side of the trees, shadows thickened, curling and twisting, forming shapes that were not human. Eyes opened within the dark, glowing with hunger.
Dev's face hardened. Too late, he muttered. They have found us.
Arin stumbled back as the shapes began to crawl from the shadows. Their forms were broken, shifting, part human and part beast, their mouths filled with sharp teeth that dripped black smoke. The night itself seemed to bend with their presence.
Dev stepped in front of him, his body tense. When I tell you to run, you run. Do not look back.
Arin's heart pounded. His legs felt frozen, but the terror of the creatures pushed him into motion. He could hear their snarls, their claws scraping against the stone path.
One of the beasts leapt forward. Dev raised his arm, and light burst from his palm, slamming into the creature and throwing it back into the dark. The ground shook with the force, and Arin felt the heat against his skin.
Run, Dev shouted.
Arin turned and sprinted down the path, the voices screaming in his mind. He did not know where he was going. He did not know if Dev would follow. All he knew was that the hunt had begun, and he was at the center of it.
Behind him, the park exploded with light and sound, as Dev faced the shadows alone.
Arin ran into the night, not knowing if he would ever see him again.
