Chapter 90 - The Connection to Open Portals
The Upside Down is a reality or alternate dimension that exists parallel to the human world. It contains the same places and infrastructure as the human world, but it's much darker, colder, and devoid of human life.
The dimension possesses root-like structures and biological membranes that cover almost every surface, while countless spores drift through the air.
But what Jonathan saw before setting foot on the ground was a world completely different from the Upside Down.
"Do you know that you have the ability to open a portal with the power of your mind?" Jonathan, while driving the car, turned toward Eleven and switched on the cabin lights to communicate better.
Eleven slightly shook her head and said softly, "I didn't know…"
'I can't believe it. Now I have to earn this girl's trust…' Jonathan smiled for a few seconds and said, "Well, obviously you've managed to form a perfect connection with the Upside Down dimension, so you should've been the first one to make contact with that place."
"Now I'll ask you this—since your creator is dead, did anyone enter that dimension without you noticing?" Jonathan's tone grew more serious, as those monsters had been oddly specific in trying to kill him.
When she heard that question, Eleven remembered scenes from her past.
She had used her powers to pin Henry against the wall of the Rainbow Room and began to disintegrate his body; however, an interdimensional portal appeared on the wall and transported Henry before Eleven could finish killing him. Who—or what—caused that portal to open, she still didn't know.
Henry was transported to a mysterious, unknown dimension—a place defined by mountainous terrain and electrical storms. It seemed to be an early version of the same dimension that would later be known as the Upside Down. Henry fell through the realm for an extended period and was struck repeatedly by lightning; these strikes marked the beginning of his transformation—
—into something no longer recognizable as human.
At first, Henry perceived the dimension as a sort of "purgatory," but he quickly changed his mind and instead saw it favorably as "a realm untouched by humanity."
Henry began to traverse the terrain and encountered many creatures, including a species of faceless humanoid predators.
Eventually, Henry discovered "the most extraordinary thing of all": a mass of dark particles swirling like a storm. Using his abilities, Henry formed a psychic connection with the particles and reshaped them into a form he found pleasing—he transformed the mist into a gigantic spider-like entity that would become known as the Shadow Monster.
Of course, Eleven could only tell Jonathan about the portal that had opened when she tried to kill Henry.
Jonathan nodded, understanding that the possibility of crossing multiple timelines until reaching Earth might have been the main reason he had seen an earlier version of the Upside Down.
But now, knowing that Henry was inside that portal, he realized that the man was very likely controlling the dimension through his abilities.
"Well, it would be interesting to consider entering that dimension again to take control of that place, since my abilities are much stronger." Jonathan's thoughts were interrupted when they arrived at the power plant.
As he stepped out of the vehicle, he sensed his surroundings and said, "Alright, let's get down. I need to try to close that damned portal."
Crack!
But once again, Jonathan felt two strong presences and one weak one coming from outside the building. Without hesitation, he stepped forward to find out who they were.
"Don't move." A burly man emerged first, holding a rifle aimed directly at Jonathan, wary of his appearance.
"I'll handle this." Jonathan was about to act, though he recognized the two people as soon as he saw them—until Eleven stopped him.
"They're good people. Don't hurt them," Eleven pleaded for Jonathan not to kill them.
Hopper froze—he was the one with the gun, yet somehow, he felt Jonathan could easily kill him.
When Jonathan saw the child in the woman's arms, he said in surprise, "Well, I'll be damned—you really did escape."
