We immediately rushed to the front of the High House just as the carriages pulled up, wheels screeching to a halt. The door opened, and Gabrielle stepped down.
I exhaled sharply, relief flooding through me, and I moved toward her, ready to pull her into an embrace—but I froze midway. Her face was pale, distant, her eyes swollen from crying.
"What happened? Where were you? Where did you go?" I demanded.
She didn't answer. Instead, her two younger sisters climbed down from the carriage behind her. Gabrielle's hands tightened protectively around theirs before she finally spoke, her voice low but steady.
"My mother took my sisters," she said. "I went to get them back."
"What?" I breathed. "When? How? You went to get them alone?"
Before I could say more, Damien appeared behind me, his tone sharp. "What happened, Lady Gabrielle?"
