"Because I can feel your eyes on me," I said through gritted teeth.
Damien looked up between us. "What's going on, Gabrielle?"
"Oh, nothing," I said sharply, forcing a smile that didn't reach my eyes. "It's just that your guest here is making me very uncomfortable."
"Oh, she's not my guest—or my mate," Damien said immediately, grimacing. "Honestly, I don't even know what she's still doing here in the High House. I think Lucien's the one keeping her around."
"Oh yes," Shirley said sweetly, tossing her hair. "Gorgeous Monster doesn't want me to leave. Apparently, he just likes having me around."
The way she said it…the sheer confidence in her tone made my vision flash red. My hand clenched around the fork so tightly that the metal bent slightly. I was one second away from launching it straight into her smug face.
But I didn't. Barely.
