The sun rose high over Musutafu, painting the sprawling city in shades of gold and amber. Cherry blossoms drifted past Izuku Midoriya's bedroom window like snow, carried on the gentle spring breeze. For most people, it was just another beautiful morning. For Izuku, today wasn't just any morning—it was the first day of his dream. The first day of U.A. High School.
He stood before his mirror, adjusting his crisp new uniform for the dozenth time. The gray blazer fit perfectly, the red tie properly knotted, but his hands still trembled with nervous energy. Small wisps of flame flickered around his fingertips before he consciously suppressed them.
*Control,* he reminded himself. *Always control.*
"Izuku! Breakfast is ready!" his mother called from the kitchen.
Downstairs, Inko Midoriya was already in full mother-hen mode, fussing over every detail of his appearance. Her own quirk activated unconsciously as her emotions peaked, small objects around the kitchen floating toward her—salt shakers, dish towels, even a few of Izuku's old All Might figurines from the counter.
"You look so handsome, Izuku," she said, her voice thick with pride and barely contained tears as she tugged at his blazer sleeves one final time. "Your father... he would be so proud too."
The mention of his father sent a familiar pang through Izuku's chest. Hisashi Midoriya had been absent for most of his life, working overseas on business that was never fully explained. But his genetic legacy lived on in Izuku's evolved Ignition quirk, flames that burned far hotter and more controlled than simple fire-breathing.
"Mom," Izuku said gently, placing a warm hand on her shoulder, "I'll make you both proud. I promise."
Inko smiled through her tears, pulling him into a tight embrace. "You already have, my brave boy. You already have."
As Izuku gathered his things—carefully organized school supplies, multiple notebooks filled with hero analysis, and a lunch packed with enough food for three people—he caught sight of his reflection in the hall mirror. The boy looking back at him was different from the one who'd been rejected from every hero program, dismissed by teachers, and tormented by former friends.
This boy carried the weight of three legacies: Zero Point from his mother, evolved and amplified beyond simple attraction; Ignition from his father, transformed from basic fire-breathing into something approaching plasma manipulation; and One For All, the accumulated power of eight generations of heroes, humming quietly in his chest like a sleeping dragon.
"All Might believed in me," he whispered under his breath as he left their apartment building, stepping into the busy morning streets. "So I'll prove him right. No matter what it takes."
## The Journey to U.A.
The train ride to U.A. was a blur of nervous energy and suppressed power. Izuku found himself unconsciously activating his quirks in tiny ways—making his phone weightless while scrolling through hero news, warming his hands when the air conditioning got too cold, feeling the constant pulse of One For All responding to his emotional state.
Other passengers gave him curious glances, probably sensing the subtle distortions in gravity around his seat or noticing the way the air shimmered slightly around his hands. He forced himself to focus on breathing exercises All Might had taught him, centering his mind and bringing his powers under control.
*Heroes don't lose control,* he reminded himself. *Heroes protect people, and that starts with not accidentally hurting anyone on the morning commute.*
As the train approached U.A.'s station, Izuku could see other students in the same uniform heading in the same direction. Some looked confident, chatting easily about their quirks and exam scores. Others seemed as nervous as he felt, clutching their bags and walking with the same careful precision of people trying not to reveal too much about their abilities.
## Arrival at U.A.
U.A. High School towered before him like a fortress of glass, steel, and dreams made manifest. The massive structure seemed to hum with barely contained energy, as if the building itself was alive with the potential of a thousand future heroes. Students streamed through its imposing gates in waves, their voices creating a buzz of excitement that filled the morning air.
Conversations drifted past him as he walked: discussions about entrance exam performances, speculation about famous teachers, nervous comparisons of quirk capabilities, and excited plans for the future. Everyone seemed to belong here, to have earned their place through obvious merit and clear purpose.
Izuku's heart raced, each beat seeming to echo in his chest like thunder. His hands trembled despite his best efforts to remain calm. The weight of impostor syndrome pressed down on him—what if someone figured out his real situation? What if they discovered One For All? What if he wasn't actually ready for this level of responsibility?
*Breathe,* he told himself, focusing on the meditation techniques All Might had drilled into him during their training. *Zero Point. Control it.*
He activated his inherited quirk just slightly, letting the familiar sensation of gravity manipulation wash over him. For a split second, the world around him felt lighter, more manageable. The crushing weight of expectation lifted from his chest like gravity itself had been dialed down to a more bearable setting.
"Midoriya!"
The familiar voice cut through his concentration like a bell. He turned to see Ochaco Uraraka practically bouncing toward him, her brown hair catching the morning sunlight as she waved enthusiastically. Her cheeks were flushed with excitement, and her smile was so genuine that Izuku felt some of his nervousness evaporate.
"You—you saved me in the exam!" she said breathlessly, nearly tripping over her own feet in her enthusiasm. "I never got to thank you properly! What you did was so amazing and heroic and—"
"I-It's fine, really!" Izuku stammered, his face immediately turning red as several nearby students turned to look. "I was just—uh—doing what a hero should do. Anyone would have—"
"No, they wouldn't have," Uraraka interrupted firmly. "Most people ran away from that zero-pointer. You ran toward it. That's not something just anyone would do."
Before Izuku could melt completely into embarrassment, another familiar voice joined the conversation.
"Midoriya!" Tenya Iida approached with his characteristic stiff, formal stride, his arms moving in precise mechanical motions that reminded Izuku of his engine quirk. "I must offer my sincerest apologies for my behavior during the presentation! I misjudged your character completely, and your performance during the practical examination was nothing short of exemplary!"
Iida executed a perfect ninety-degree bow that made several passing students pause to stare.
"Your heroic resolve and willingness to sacrifice your own advancement for the sake of others demonstrates the true spirit that U.A. seeks to cultivate!" he continued, straightening up with military precision. "I humbly acknowledge my error in judgment!"
Izuku scratched the back of his neck, completely overwhelmed by the intense praise. "R-Really, Iida-kun, it's okay. I just did what felt right in the moment..."
*First Uraraka, now Iida,* he thought frantically. *I don't deserve this kind of recognition. They're treating me like some kind of hero, but I'm just... me.*
A harsh, familiar voice cut through his spiraling thoughts like a knife.
"Tch. Don't get cocky, Deku."
The temperature around them seemed to rise several degrees as Katsuki Bakugo approached, his hands shoved deep in his pockets and his red eyes burning with barely contained fury. Several students instinctively stepped back, sensing the volatile energy radiating from the explosive blonde.
"So you finally got a quirk, huh?" Bakugo continued, his voice dripping with disdain. "Doesn't matter how flashy it looked in the exam. I saw the footage—gravity tricks and some fire manipulation. Big deal. I'll still crush you into the dirt where you belong."
He stepped closer, ignoring the nervous glances from Uraraka and Iida.
"Triple legacy or whatever bullshit story you're spinning," Bakugo snarled, "you're still just a quirkless nerd playing dress-up. The minute this school gets serious, you'll crack like you always do."
The familiar sting of his childhood friend's words hit deep, awakening years of buried pain and self-doubt. For a moment, Izuku felt himself shrinking back into old patterns, becoming the frightened, powerless boy who had endured years of torment.
But then he felt it—the warm pulse of One For All in his chest, the steady presence of his inherited quirks, and most importantly, the memory of All Might's faith in him. He straightened his shoulders, meeting Bakugo's glare with steady green eyes.
"We'll see, Kacchan," he said quietly, his voice carrying a certainty that surprised even him.
Bakugo's eyes widened slightly at the unexpected show of backbone, his hands beginning to spark with small explosions. But before the confrontation could escalate, the morning bell chimed across the campus, and the flow of students toward the main building intensified.
"Come on," Uraraka said, gently tugging at Izuku's sleeve. "We should find our classroom before we're late on the first day."
As they walked toward the imposing entrance, Iida fell into step beside them, still radiating formal energy. "Class 1-A should be on the first floor, according to the orientation materials. I've already memorized the optimal route to minimize travel time between periods."
Izuku glanced back once to see Bakugo stalking after them, his expression dark with promise. The confrontation was far from over, but for the first time in his life, Izuku wasn't afraid of it.
## Class 1-A
The classroom designated for Class 1-A was massive, clearly designed to accommodate students with a wide variety of physical quirks and needs. Oversized desks were arranged in neat rows, each equipped with built-in technology displays and emergency communication systems. Large windows provided natural light while reinforced walls suggested this room had been built to withstand more than just academic discussions.
Izuku barely had time to take in the impressive setup when a dull, distinctly unimpressed voice emerged from what appeared to be a yellow sleeping bag in the corner of the room.
"If you're here to socialize, leave now. If you're here to become heroes, sit down and shut up."
Twenty pairs of eyes turned toward the corner as the sleeping bag began to unzip, revealing a man with shoulder-length black hair, tired eyes, and the general appearance of someone who hadn't slept properly in weeks. His capture weapon was wrapped around his neck like a scarf, and his entire demeanor radiated the energy of someone who had seen too much and had no patience for nonsense.
"I'm Shota Aizawa. Your homeroom teacher," he announced in a monotone voice that somehow managed to command absolute attention. "Change into your gym clothes and meet me outside. We're doing a test."
Immediately, excited murmurs broke out across the classroom.
"A test? Already?"
"But what about orientation?"
"Shouldn't we have some kind of introduction first?"
"I heard about the entrance ceremony—"
Aizawa's tired eyes sharpened, and his hair began to float slightly as his quirk activated just enough to demonstrate his displeasure. The room fell silent immediately.
"The world doesn't wait for you to get comfortable," he said, his voice cutting through the silence like a blade. "Real villains don't pause for orientation ceremonies or introductory handshakes. Heroes are measured by results, not by how well they follow traditional academic schedules."
He pulled out a device that looked like a modified smartphone. "You have five minutes to change and get to Training Ground Alpha. Anyone who's late fails immediately."
The scramble for the door was immediate and chaotic.
## The Quirk Apprehension Test
Training Ground Alpha stretched wide under the late morning sun, a perfectly maintained field with marked areas for various physical assessments. The setup looked similar to standard fitness tests that Izuku remembered from middle school, but he could see additional equipment designed for quirk evaluation—reinforced measuring devices, heat-resistant materials, and what looked like gravity-adjustment platforms.
Aizawa stood in the center of the field, looking no more awake than he had in the classroom. In his hand was a standard softball, identical to thousands used in schools across Japan. But Izuku had the distinct feeling that this particular ball was about to become something much more significant.
"Before we begin," Aizawa announced as the twenty students of Class 1-A gathered around him, "let me make something clear. This isn't just a fitness test. This is an assessment of your quirk control, your strategic thinking, and your potential as future heroes."
He tossed the softball to Izuku, who caught it reflexively.
"Midoriya. You scored highest on the entrance exam. According to your middle school records, your best softball throw was 67 meters."
Izuku nodded, acutely aware that every eye in the class was now focused on him. "Y-Yes, sensei. That's correct."
"Demonstrate your quirk. Show us what you can really do."
The weight of expectation pressed down on Izuku like a physical force. His classmates leaned in eagerly—some with curiosity, others with competitive calculation. Bakugo's scowl promised violence if Izuku performed too well, while Uraraka clenched her fists in obvious support.
*Control,* Izuku reminded himself, feeling his three quirks responding to his emotional state. *Don't overdo it, but don't hold back so much that it looks suspicious.*
He centered himself in the throwing circle, feeling the familiar weight of the softball in his palm. But as he activated his quirks, the ball became something else entirely.
Zero Point activated first, negating the ball's gravitational pull until it hovered weightless above his palm like a small planet in miniature orbit. The effect was subtle but visible—the ball rotated slowly, completely free from Earth's pull.
Next came Ignition, but not the wild flames he'd used during the entrance exam. This was controlled fire, precise and purposeful. A swirl of superheated air began to wrap around the ball, creating thermal currents that shimmered like liquid light. The air itself became a propulsion system, ready to launch the projectile with incredible force.
Finally, he pulsed One For All through his arm—just a fraction of the inherited quirk's true power, but enough to enhance his natural throwing strength beyond human limits. The stockpiled energy flowed through his muscles like liquid lightning, adding exponential force to his throw without breaking his bones.
"Zero Point Ignition Throw!" he called out, releasing the ball in a perfect arc.
The softball became a miniature comet, trailing fire and gravitational distortions as it rocketed across the sky. It moved so fast that it created a brief sonic boom, and the heat trail it left behind made the air shimmer like a mirage. The ball disappeared from sight in less than three seconds, vanishing into the distance with power that defied conventional physics.
Aizawa's measurement device beeped, and he glanced at the reading with raised eyebrows that suggested this was impressive even by U.A. standards.
"One thousand, seven hundred and two meters," he announced to the stunned class.
The training field erupted in chaos.
"WHAT THE HELL?!" Bakugo's explosion-enhanced shout echoed across the entire campus.
"That's impossible!" someone else gasped.
"I've never seen anything like that!"
"How can one person have so many different abilities?"
Even the most confident students looked shaken by the display. Iida's engines were revving unconsciously, while a girl with creation-based powers was frantically scribbling calculations in a notebook.
But Izuku barely heard the commotion. He was too busy staring at his hand, watching the interplay of residual energy from his three quirks. Small flames still danced around his fingers, the air continued to shimmer with heat distortion, and he could feel Zero Point's influence making his entire body slightly weightless.
More importantly, he could sense something he'd never noticed before—a harmony between his abilities that went deeper than simple combination techniques. One For All wasn't just amplifying his natural quirks; it was creating bridges between them, allowing for power interactions that shouldn't have been possible.
Aizawa's voice cut through the excited chatter like a cold knife.
"Impressive distance," he said, his expression remaining completely neutral. "But don't celebrate yet, Midoriya. This test is about more than raw power. If you can't rein those quirks in, if you can't control them in every situation, then you're just a walking disaster waiting to happen."
The teacher's words hit Izuku like a physical blow. He was right, of course. The throw had been spectacular, but it had also been somewhat reckless. What if he'd miscalculated? What if the ball had come down in a populated area? What if he'd lost control of the combination and created an actual explosion?
"Control isn't just about using your quirk," Aizawa continued, addressing the entire class now. "It's about knowing when not to use it. It's about understanding the consequences of your actions and taking responsibility for every ounce of power you wield."
He pulled out a tablet displaying the class roster. "We have seven more tests to complete. Grip strength, standing long jump, sustained running, ball throwing in multiple scenarios, reaction time, and endurance challenges. Some of you will excel at certain tests, others will struggle. But remember—being a hero isn't about being the strongest or the fastest."
His tired eyes swept across the group of eager faces. "It's about being reliable. Consistent. Someone that people can count on when everything else falls apart."
## The Remaining Tests
The rest of the assessment battery pushed every student to demonstrate their quirk's applications across different physical challenges. Izuku found himself having to constantly recalibrate his power output, using just enough of his abilities to perform well without completely overshadowing his classmates.
For the grip strength test, he used a controlled burst of One For All to enhance his natural strength, achieving 540 kilograms while watching Mezo Shoji's multiple arms reach an incredible 540 kilograms through entirely different means.
The standing long jump became an exercise in gravity manipulation. Izuku activated Zero Point to reduce his effective weight, then used a controlled Ignition blast for additional propulsion. His jump of 75 meters was impressive, but not so far beyond the realm of possibility that it would raise uncomfortable questions.
The sustained run was perhaps the most challenging test for him to moderate. By creating thermal updrafts with Ignition and reducing his gravitational load with Zero Point, he could essentially fly at ground level. But doing so would definitely attract the wrong kind of attention. Instead, he settled for using alternating bursts of both quirks to maintain a pace that was fast but not superhuman, completing the 1500-meter course in just over three minutes.
Throughout each test, Izuku became increasingly aware of his classmates' abilities. Tenya Iida's engine quirk made him incredibly fast in straight lines. Ochaco Uraraka's zero gravity had applications he'd never considered. Even Katsuki Bakugo's explosion quirk, which Izuku had seen countless times, revealed new subtleties when applied to athletic challenges rather than combat.
But more than individual abilities, he was not
