Chapter 261 - Chapter 24: Angel: "Can You Open the Door?"

They signed the contract in the same familiar way.

There was no need to draft a new one. They simply reused the previous template.

Once the contract was finalized, Morin released the Ghost Rider's motorcycle, allowing him to continue forward.

"Alright, you can speed now," Morin said casually. "But remember-don't hurt any ordinary people. Or I'll arrest you."

"Hmph. Stop pretending," Mephisto sneered. "You didn't care about ordinary people before."

"Whether I care or not is one thing," Morin waved his hand.

"What I should do is another."

"My previous choices were the best ones available," he added calmly.

"So I have a clear conscience."

"The best choice... heh heh..." Mephisto couldn't gain the upper hand verbally.

He turned into a puff of smoke and vanished, clearly intending to prove himself through action later.

"So rude," Morin muttered.

He disappeared as well.

Johnny, now the Ghost Rider, accelerated hard.

He went as fast as he could.

The shockwaves shattered windows as he passed. Air pressure rippled through the houses along the road.

It felt incredible.

Speeding without restraint.

Remembering how he'd been stopped more than twenty times the night before, Johnny felt pure exhilaration.

Soon, he spotted Carter.

The old cowboy stood by the roadside with a horse.

Johnny slowed and stopped.

"Are you ready?" Carter asked, smiling.

"Always," Johnny replied, looking at him.

"...Are you coming with me?"

"I've been waiting for this day a long time," Carter said, mounting his horse.

"I'm Carter Slade. The previous Ghost Rider. The San Venganza contract was my doing."

"I'm no longer strong enough to solve this myself," he continued.

"But I can still see you off one last time."

As he finished speaking, Carter burned the last remaining power in his body.

The Cowboy Ghost Rider appeared instantly.

A skeleton wreathed in hellfire, riding a blazing horse.

"That's... so cool," Johnny said honestly.

"But can you keep up with me?"

Johnny was on a motorcycle.

Carter was on a horse.

Normally, that comparison would be absurd.

But common sense didn't apply to Ghost Riders.

"Keep up?" Carter laughed.

"Kid, let's race."

"...Alright." Johnny's interest surged.

Morin watched from a distance.

This time, he didn't interfere.

This was the final ride of a knight.

The closing chapter before death.

In moments like this, Morin chose to let things unfold as they should.

Under the moonlight, across the wilderness, a trail of fire stretched out.

Beside it, four flames flared continuously.

Two riders.

One old.

One new.

They rode toward a demon.

At last, they reached San Venganza.

Once, it had been a paradise.

Kind people.

A love for life.

Then a Hell-Lord set his sights on it.

He tempted the villagers into sin.

They killed each other for profit.

The village became a ghost town.

Then ruin.

The souls of San Venganza were trapped there-

silent, vengeful, waiting to be summoned, sacrificed, or devoured.

Blackheart had already arrived.

"Delay the uninvited guest," Blackheart ordered the Wind and Water Demons at the entrance.

"The ritual needs time."

The two demons exchanged glances.

Then obeyed.

They moved to set up an ambush along the road.

"This is my last transformation," Carter said, reverting to human form.

"It's drained everything."

"Heaven knows how many mistakes I've made," he murmured.

"I only hope... I can be saved. That I can go to Heaven."

"I don't know if you'll be saved," Morin said, appearing before them.

"But I can guarantee you'll go to Heaven."

"Are you ready?"

"I am." Carter's expression was solemn.

"Thank you, sir, for giving me this chance."

"My last wish is to see the new Ghost Rider ride toward vengeance."

He removed his hat and saluted.

"It's nothing," Morin replied.

"You earned it."

"And you, Johnny," Carter turned to him.

He hesitated, then spoke carefully.

"No matter what happens... trust Mr. Morin."

"...I will," Johnny said quietly.

He didn't fully understand.

"It's time," Morin said.

His detection spell showed Carter's body rapidly decaying.

Without the Spirit of Vengeance, he wouldn't last long.

"I'm ready," Carter Slade said.

He adjusted his hat.

Then tossed his flintlock pistol to Johnny.

"It'll be quick," Morin said softly.

He activated the angelic mark-

the one the system had purified using one hundred thousand experience points.

Mana surged.

Spatial coordinates locked.

A massive, intricate spell formed.

Heaven's Gate opened.

"I feel..." Carter closed his eyes, sighing as the gate slowly opened.

He was kicked straight inside.

Heaven's Gate slammed shut.

A beam of holy light burst outward-

Then vanished as the gate sealed completely.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

A voice came from the other side.

"Can you open the door again?"

"Sorry," Morin shouted.

"Earth doesn't accept guests."

"...Open it, and we can offer you a permanent Saint package," the voice said after a pause.

"Any perks?" Morin asked, interested.

"After you die, your soul can become an angel."

"That's it?" Morin replied.

"...At minimum, a four-winged archangel," the voice added hastily.

"Not sincere enough," Morin said flatly.

"Go reflect on your business practices. We'll talk next time."

He sealed Heaven's Gate completely.

"...Was that an angel?" Johnny asked.

His worldview felt shattered.

"Special package?"

"Four-winged archangel?"

Is that even a thing?

"There's something wrong with Heaven," he muttered.

"Probably," Morin said.

"It's my first time opening the door."

"...Are you sure you didn't open the wrong one?"

"I'm sure," Morin waved him off.

"Maybe Heaven just kept up with the times."

That didn't help at all.

"Was their offer really that bad?" Johnny asked.

"Why didn't you accept?"

"Are you stupid?" Morin snapped.

"If someone asks something of me, I can refuse multiple times."

"Refuse now, get a better offer later."

"I'm not dying anytime soon."

"Playing hard to get is normal."

"...." Johnny had no response.

It made sense.

But his image of Heaven was permanently ruined.

"Enough," Morin waved his hand.

"Go."

"The Spirit of Vengeance remembers what Heaven used to be like."

"When you sober him up, you'll know."

"Even if it changed, you'll know what it was."

"Mr. Morin..." Johnny hesitated.

"You're not coming?"

"I can't," Morin said.

"I signed a contract with Mephisto regarding Blackheart."

"Unless he harms ordinary people, I can't intervene."

"So until then-this is on you."

"...Okay."

Johnny nodded.

He took Carter's pistol, mounted his bike, transformed, and rode off.

"Finally," Morin sighed, watching him leave.

"It's about to begin."

He smiled faintly.

Then glanced at the mark on his arm.

Moments later, he flew off.

He would appear at the climax.

After all this maneuvering, it was time to place the final piece.

As for Heaven-

Morin had plans.

Their offer was laughable.

A deal after death?

If Morin died unexpectedly, his soul could persist for a long time.

Retrieval wouldn't be difficult.

Trying to profit from his soul afterward?

Insincere.

A bad deal.

But Morin didn't resent Heaven.

Their behavior was normal.

Just annoying.

In essence-

Heaven and Hell weren't that different.

Different energy.

Different methods.

Same pursuit of profit.

...

At the center of San Venganza, beside the well.

Blackheart stood there.

The ritual was ready.

He held the contract, prepared to unroll it.

Then-

A motorcycle roared in the distance.

A familiar presence approached.

"Damn it!" Blackheart cursed.

"You useless idiots!"

The ritual couldn't be interrupted once started.

He rolled the contract back up.

"Blackheart!"

Johnny rode in from the opposite side.

Chains wrapped around his body.

The flintlock pistol gleamed with enchantment.

Carter used a gun.

Johnny used chains.

A strange regression.

If Johnny had been smarter, he could've enchanted modern weapons.

Machine guns.

Grenades.

Rifles.

But no.

He chose a chain.

A disgrace to modern firepower.

"They really were useless," Blackheart snarled.

"I'll deal with them after I kill you."

"No need," Johnny's skull grinned.

"I already sent them to you."

"They're ash."

The Wind and Water Demons had always been jokes.

Now, they were dealt with even faster.

"Go back to hell!" Johnny roared.

"After I kill you, I'll turn this place into hell!" Blackheart charged.

The battle began.
