However, the Devil Fruit created by Emiya was definitely not a real one. It was only a similar-looking object, something he had brought to life through imagination.
Aside from its appearance, it had no connection to an actual Devil Fruit. Even the way it granted power was completely different.
But Emiya still failed.
The reason was simple. It wasn't a flaw in his imagination, but another factor that stopped him from creating the Devil Fruit he had envisioned.
Mana.
Creating a Flawless Devil Fruit required far more mana than Emiya had expected, especially for a Logia-type fruit.
So for now, he couldn't create it. He would have to wait until his mana evolved to a much higher level.
"That's a real shame," Kazuma Sato sighed, his face falling. "I was hoping I could leap straight to the top with your ability."
"That's not necessarily true. There are still ways to leap to the top," Emiya replied with a smile. "Even if I can't replicate a Devil Fruit, I can create other things."
Since he had never seen a real Devil Fruit, Emiya couldn't perfectly recreate one. But if he abandoned the idea of a Devil Fruit entirely, he could simply make what he wanted.
"What kind of things?" Kazuma asked, clearly confused.
Emiya tossed a ring over. Kazuma caught it and frowned. "What's this?"
"The Enhanced Iron Wall Ring."
"Iron Wall? Isn't that a Crusader skill?"
"That's right," Emiya nodded. "The Iron Wall Ring is something I created with my imagination. Anyone who wears it gains the Iron Wall ability. An enhanced version."
Emiya had already learned Iron Wall and understood it thoroughly. Using that knowledge, he had effortlessly created an improved version through imagination.
This item was even stronger than the skill itself, instantly granting massive defensive power to an ordinary person.
While it still couldn't compare to Darkness's defense, it was easily on par with an average Crusader. If sold, it would be worth tens of millions of Eris.
Kazuma slipped the ring on and checked his adventurer card. His defense stat had skyrocketed to an absurd number. "Whoa. This is insane."
Aqua immediately grabbed Emiya's arm and shook it hard. "Why did you give something this amazing to Kazuma? I want one too! Me! Me!"
Emiya sighed, created another Enhanced Iron Wall Ring, and handed it to Aqua. She beamed, quickly putting it on her right hand.
Emiya then looked at Darkness.
She shook her head. "No. I don't need one. I'm confident in my own defense."
"That's true," Emiya said, nodding.
Darkness gasped. "This cold, ruthless rejection play is incredible!"
Emiya: ???
When did I reject you?
You're the one who said you didn't want it.
He sighed, about to respond, when a bluish-white light suddenly erupted from the center of the graveyard.
An eerie, fantastical glow formed a massive circular magic circle. Beside it stood a figure in a black robe, with several figures floating around them.
"Is that the Zombie Maker?" Kazuma asked cautiously.
The undead they were meant to defeat today was a Zombie Maker. Despite the ominous name, it was a low-level evil spirit that controlled zombies, usually possessing a well-preserved corpse and leading a few undead minions.
It was considered weak enough that even a novice adventurer party could handle it.
That was exactly why someone like Kazuma had accepted the quest. If it had been any stronger, he wouldn't have come at all.
"Should we charge?" Darkness said, gripping her greatsword. "Even if that's not the Zombie Maker, anyone here at this hour is probably undead. With Aqua the Arch-Priestess here, we'll be fine."
Emiya already knew who this undead was. He had read the script.
Before he could say anything, Aqua charged forward, pointing at the figure.
"How dare you, a Lich, show yourself in a place like this? So arrogant! I'll take care of you myself!"
In a fantasy world, a Lich was one of the highest-ranking undead, on par with a True Vampire.
Most Liches were great mages who had perfected their craft, abandoning their human bodies through forbidden arcane secrets to become a King of the Undead.
But even a King of the Undead was powerless before a goddess.
"Sto-stop! Please stop!" the figure cried out. "Who are you? You just appeared out of nowhere! Why are you destroying my magic circle? Please, stop!"
"Shut up, undead monster!" Aqua shouted. "You're clearly up to something evil with this suspicious magic circle, right? What is this thing? I'll stomp it! I'll stomp it!"
Aqua went on a rampage, mercilessly destroying the magic circle created by the Lich.
That Lich was Wiz.
The same Wiz who served as one of the Devil King's Generals. The same Wiz who ran a struggling magic item shop in Axel.
Emiya had chosen this quest precisely to meet her.
Facing Aqua's tyrannical assault, Wiz desperately tried to explain.
"Please stop! That magic circle is meant to guide souls that haven't been laid to rest back to heaven! Look-souls are rising from it, aren't they?"
She wasn't lying.
Emiya could clearly see bluish-white wisps drifting in from nowhere, drawn into the magic circle and carried upward along with its light.
But her explanation only made Aqua angrier.
"You're a Lich! Why are you acting so high and mighty?" Aqua yelled. "That's a good deed an Arch-Priestess like me should be doing! Get out of my way! At this rate, how long will it take you? I'll purify this whole public graveyard. You included!"
Wiz froze in terror.
Aqua raised her hands without hesitation.
"Turn Undead!"
A wave of white light exploded outward, centered on Aqua, engulfing the entire graveyard.
The light surged from her body. As it touched the zombies following Wiz, they vanished like smoke. The gathered spirits around the magic circle also disappeared.
Now.
As the light rushed toward Wiz, Emiya activated his telekinesis instantly.
The white light slammed into an invisible barrier and dispersed, failing to harm Wiz at all.
Aqua snapped.
She stormed forward, grabbed Emiya by the collar, and pointed at the trembling Lich. "Why? Why are you protecting a Lich?"
Emiya chopped her on the head.
Then he looked down at Aqua as she clutched her head. "Calm down. By every measure, this Lich isn't doing anything bad."
That only made Aqua angrier. "Huh? Not bad? Have you lost your mind? That's a Lich! Do you know what a Lich is? It's an existence that defies the natural order! An undead monster that goes against the will of the gods!"
Her voice rose to an astonishing volume.
Wiz squeaked and hid behind Emiya.
Emiya lowered his hand from his ear. "You're right. But the Lich I'm looking at isn't committing evil. She's doing good deeds. You all saw it, didn't you?"
He looked to Darkness and Kazuma.
Both nodded.
"That's obviously a disguise!" Aqua snapped. "She's pretending to be good. There's definitely some sinister agenda behind it! Believe me! I'm a goddess!"
Aqua showed no signs of backing down.
"Um..." Wiz timidly peeked out from behind Emiya. "I don't have a sinister agenda."
"Shut up, Lich! Who would believe you?" Aqua barked.
Wiz immediately shrank back.
After witnessing Aqua's overwhelming Turn Undead, it was only natural. Without Emiya's protection, she would have been erased instantly.
Fear lingered in her eyes as she hid behind the self-proclaimed adventurer goddess's enemy.
Emiya ignored Aqua and looked at Wiz. "Tell us. What are you doing here?"
Wiz swallowed nervously. "My name is Wiz. As you can see, I'm a Lich-a King of the Undead. As a King of the Undead, I can hear the voices of souls still wandering in this world."
"Many of the souls buried in this public graveyard couldn't afford proper funerals. They couldn't return to heaven and instead wander here every night."
"So... I come here from time to time to guide these children, who wish to return to heaven, on their way."
