"Kazuma, pass me the seasoning."
"This one?"
"Yeah. That's it."
Emiya took the cumin from Kazuma and sprinkled it over the lamb skewers sizzling on the grill. The spice mixed with the scent of roasted meat, filling the air with a rich, tempting aroma.
They were at the edge of Axel's public cemetery.
The group was waiting for nightfall while making dinner.
Tonight's meal was barbecue.
The grill, the seasonings, and the meat had all been created by Emiya. It had to be said-Imaginary Creation was absurdly convenient.
With this ability, surviving anywhere was easy.
"Wait, Kazuma, I saw that piece first! Here, the vegetables are already done. Eat these!"
"No. Absolutely not."
"Here, Aqua."
As Kazuma and Aqua argued over a piece of meat, Emiya calmly split a portion of the grilled lamb skewers and placed them into Aqua's hand.
The other portion went to Darkness.
"Thank you," Darkness said softly. When she wasn't revealing her true nature, she really did look like a refined noble lady.
"You're welcome."
Emiya created several dozen fresh skewers and laid them across the grill.
Strictly speaking, he could have created fully cooked skewers that tasted just as good-maybe even better.
But that would ruin the atmosphere.
Besides, he wasn't grilling because he was hungry.
He was killing time.
Emiya glanced up. The sun had already sunk beyond the horizon. Dusk was fading.
Night was about to take over.
After finishing the skewers in his hand, Emiya passed some to Kazuma. Kazuma took a big bite and suddenly asked, "Hey. Your ability lets you create anything you imagine, right?"
Emiya nodded.
"I've been wondering since the start," Kazuma continued. "Can you create a Devil Fruit?"
"Nani nani? What's a Devil Fruit?" Aqua asked, curious.
Emiya snapped his fingers.
"Kazuma, you found the blind spot."
He paused.
"You're not the only one who's thought about it. I have too. I even tried."
"And?" Kazuma leaned forward. "What happened?"
"It failed."
Emiya shrugged.
He wasn't lying. He had seriously thought about it late at night. He had even tested it.
Not just Devil Fruits either.
Zanpakuto. Dragon Balls. Holy Grails. Time stoppers. Time machines. Void Genes. Death Notes.
He had tried them all.
Every single one failed.
"Why?" Kazuma frowned.
"Because imagination is vague," Emiya said evenly. "Take lamb, for example. I've eaten it. I know its taste, smell, texture, and flavor. That's why I can create it so easily."
"But things I've never seen or experienced? Even with imagination, I can't perfectly reproduce them."
"If there's even a tiny deviation, what I create becomes something completely different."
As he spoke, a fruit appeared in Emiya's hand.
Orange-red. Spherical. Covered in spiral patterns.
The green stem curled into a spiral on one end and flared like a flame on the other. The skin was packed with countless flame-like swirls.
A Devil Fruit.
A Logia-type Devil Fruit.
"That's the Mera Mera no Mi, right?" Kazuma recognized it instantly.
Emiya nodded.
"That's right."
"Wait, you did create it!"
"It only looks the same."
Emiya casually tossed the fruit to Kazuma.
"Want to try it?"
Kazuma caught it and stared. "Isn't this thing supposed to taste horrible?"
"No."
"...Really?"
"Really."
Kazuma took out a knife and cut it open. He picked up a piece, hesitated, then asked again, "It's really not bad?"
"Why don't you find out?" Aqua said.
In one swift motion, she snatched the fruit and shoved it straight into Kazuma's mouth.
Kazuma bit down instinctively.
It was sweet.
"Aqua-you-this is actually good! Wait."
He froze.
"This is just a cantaloupe, isn't it?"
After swallowing, he felt nothing change in his body.
No powers. No reactions.
Just fruit.
Emiya nodded. "When I created it, I changed the taste. So I gave it a cantaloupe flavor."
"I see..."
"Even if I hadn't," Emiya continued, "it still wouldn't taste like the real thing."
"What do you mean?" Kazuma asked.
Emiya glanced at him.
"Because I've never eaten a real Devil Fruit. I don't know what it tastes like."
"Got it now?"
Kazuma slapped his palm.
"So because you've never experienced it or come into contact with it, you can't imagine it properly."
"Exactly."
Emiya knew what Devil Fruits were. He had seen the Mera Mera no Mi.
That's why he could recreate its appearance.
But taste was different.
He only knew it was supposedly similar to feces.
Unfortunately, Emiya had never eaten feces.
So he couldn't reproduce that taste.
Even imagination had limits.
The same applied to abilities.
He knew Devil Fruits granted powers, but since he had never eaten one, he couldn't recreate that effect through imagination alone.
That was also why other legendary items had failed.
Of course, Emiya didn't tell Kazuma that there was another way.
A way to use imagination to create a perfect Devil Fruit with no drawbacks.
For example.
A Devil Fruit that tasted amazing.
And wasn't afraid of seawater.
