----------------------------------------------------------
By the time Emiya returned to Axel with Wiz, it was already late at night.
On the way back, through deliberate conversation, the distance between them had closed quite a bit. They were no longer just business partners, but friends.
At least, that was how Emiya saw it.
After learning that Emiya was still a novice adventurer, Wiz even offered to teach him some useful skills.
If he wanted, she was willing to teach him Lich skills as well.
The only requirement was enough skill points.
As the King of the Undead, Lich skills were never cheap.
They parted ways on one of Axel's streets.
Before leaving, Wiz handed Emiya her shop's business card, and Emiya promised to visit when he had time.
As he walked back to the mansion, a smile stayed on Emiya's face.
Meeting Wiz today had been a good outcome.
Not only could he learn new skills, but he had also gained a reliable friend.
In the future, if he ran into trouble involving the undead, he would have someone to turn to.
As a Lich proficient in many types of magic, Wiz was undeniably powerful.
Setting aside a few cheating existences, she stood at the top tier, just below the gods.
Even Orario's so-called "final weapon" wouldn't be her match.
To be honest, Emiya was quite satisfied with this result.
So his smile didn't fade.
Until he stepped into the mansion.
The moment he entered, his expression froze.
Everyone was there.
Riveria, Ais, Aqua, Kazuma, Darkness.
All of them were waiting for him.
But that wasn't the main issue.
The real problem was the girl standing front and center.
She was slender and delicate, looking no older than twelve or thirteen. An eyepatch covered one eye, and she dramatically flung open her cloak.
"My name is Megumin! My profession is Arch-Wizard! I wield the strongest offensive magic-Explosion-ow!"
Emiya expressionlessly reached out, grabbed her eyepatch, stretched it forward, and let go.
Snap.
The eyepatch rebounded at high speed and smacked her square in the face.
Just like that, the self-proclaimed Arch-Wizard was instantly defeated.
Megumin squatted on the floor, clutching her face and trembling.
Most of the people present stared at Emiya in disbelief.
Only one person was visibly shaking with excitement, muttering something about sadism and wanting to try it herself.
She even seemed to be considering buying an eyepatch tomorrow.
Emiya pretended he hadn't heard anything.
He rubbed his temples.
His good mood evaporated completely.
"So," Emiya asked flatly, "what's going on?"
"Why is she here?"
Aqua, Kazuma, and Darkness all turned to look at Riveria.
Emiya did the same.
Riveria sighed.
"I ran into her on my way back today," she said. "She was so hungry she could barely walk. I couldn't just leave her there, so I brought her back."
"I see."
Emiya understood immediately.
He wasn't surprised.
Megumin was, objectively speaking, a problematic mage.
Despite calling herself an Arch-Wizard, she could only use one spell.
Explosion.
And only once a day.
After casting it, her mana would be completely drained, leaving her unable to defend herself at all.
In an adventurer party, she wasn't just ineffective.
She was a burden.
That was why hardly anyone in Axel was willing to take her in.
And because Explosion made completing normal quests nearly impossible, she had no stable income.
Being hungry was inevitable.
Emiya remembered that in the original story, when Megumin first met Kazuma and Aqua, she hadn't eaten for three days.
Even so, she still refused to abandon Explosion magic.
There was no doubt about it.
She was another problem child.
More accurately, the entire Crimson Demon Clan was full of them.
Their way of thinking simply didn't align with normal people.
Because of this, Emiya had never planned to recruit Megumin.
Yet somehow, despite that, she still appeared in front of him.
Was this plot inertia?
"So," Emiya said, looking at Riveria, "you want to keep her?"
Riveria nodded. "Is that not okay?"
Emiya wasn't interested in chuunibyou behavior, and he didn't find it cute either.
That was one of the reasons he hadn't sought Megumin out.
But now that she was already here, throwing her out wasn't an option.
"Kazuma," Emiya said, "I'll leave Megumin to you."
He directly handed Megumin over to Kazuma.
After all, in the original story, those two ended up together anyway.
"Huh? Me?" Kazuma was clearly caught off guard.
Emiya nodded. "That's right. I'll be counting on you."
"I... I understand," Kazuma said.
Since Emiya had asked, he couldn't refuse.
And, admittedly, he did think Megumin was cute.
Seeing that Emiya had agreed to let her stay, Megumin immediately thanked him.
"Thank you."
She was genuinely happy.
Finding a party willing to take her in wasn't easy.
"You're welcome," Emiya said calmly.
"From now on, you'll be acting with Kazuma."
"I understand."
Megumin nodded, walked over to Kazuma, and swung her cloak again.
"My name is Megumin, the greatest Arch-Wizard of the Crimson Demon Clan. I look forward to working with you."
"...I look forward to working with you too," Kazuma replied with a helpless sigh, already resigned to her chuunibyou behavior.
Emiya continued, "It's late. Everyone, get some rest."
"Kazuma, take Megumin and help her choose a room."
Kazuma nodded. "Come on."
Megumin followed him obediently.
Emiya looked at the others.
"The same goes for all of you. Rest well. Come back tomorrow with clear heads."
Riveria stood up from the sofa.
"Let's go," she said to Ais.
Ais nodded.
Darkness stretched lazily. "Good night."
"Good night," Aqua said.
"Good night," Emiya replied.
And just like that, the night passed quietly.
