The next morning, after breakfast, Emiya and the group returned to the Adventurers' Guild to accept a quest.
Riveria and Ais took on a high-risk commission and left on their own.
That left Megumin looking confused.
"Huh? Riveria and Ais aren't coming with us?"
Kazuma shook his head.
"Listen, Megumin. Riveria and Ais are ridiculously strong. They're on a completely different level from beginners like us. If they came along, we'd just end up in danger. Got it?"
Megumin swallowed and nodded obediently.
Emiya knocked Kazuma on the head.
"Don't scare the newcomer. Go pick a quest."
Kazuma rubbed his head, nodded, and walked over to the quest board.
A moment later, he returned holding a sheet.
"I think this one's perfect for us."
Emiya took a look.
It was a quest to defeat kobolds.
Like goblins, kobolds weren't particularly dangerous and were suitable for novice adventurers.
Of course, they weren't recommended for complete beginners.
But Emiya's group had already dealt with quite a few monsters. Kobolds wouldn't be a problem.
"This works," Emiya said, nodding.
That settled it.
After registering the quest, the group rode their electric bikes out of Axel toward a nearby hill.
There were many caves scattered throughout the hills outside the city.
Some were naturally formed.
Others had been dug out by the very monsters they were hunting.
Kobolds.
Kobolds preferred dark environments-underground or deep forests.
They were excellent miners and often lived in the tunnels they excavated themselves.
That didn't mean they were harmless.
Every night, kobolds moved in groups, raiding nearby villages.
They kidnapped goats, chickens, ducks, and other livestock to survive.
This caused constant trouble for the surrounding settlements.
Which was why the Adventurers' Guild kept issuing subjugation quests against them.
After circling the hill for a while, Emiya's group found a kobold cave.
They stopped at the entrance.
No one went in.
The reason was simple.
The smell.
Even standing outside, the stench pouring out of the cave was overwhelming.
If they rushed in like this, they'd probably pass out before even seeing a kobold.
"What do we do?" Kazuma looked at Aqua.
Aqua immediately took a step back.
"Why are you looking at me? I'm not going in. Absolutely not."
Kazuma rolled his eyes.
"You're an Arch-Priest, aren't you? Think of something."
"An Arch-Priest can heal wounds and save lives," Aqua snapped back, "but I can't fix a bad smell!"
Kazuma clicked his tongue.
"So useless."
Then he turned to Megumin.
"You're an Arch-Wizard, right? Hurry up and do something."
Megumin looked away.
"Why are you avoiding eye contact?"
She pulled her hat down, covering half her face, and turned slightly to the side.
"Even though I'm an Arch-Wizard... I only know one magic."
"...What?"
Kazuma stared at her.
"You're kidding me, right?"
"Alright, Kazuma." Emiya raised a hand. "Even though Megumin is an Arch-Wizard, it's true. She only knows one spell. That's common knowledge."
Kazuma's expression collapsed completely.
"I'll charge in!" Darkness suddenly declared. "This stench, those vulgar kobolds... I can already imagine what they'll do to me! Even if I'm captured and subjected to unspeakable acts, I will never surrender!"
She looked like she was about to rush in immediately.
"No need."
Emiya stopped her.
"I have a better solution."
He pulled Megumin over and pointed at the cave entrance.
"Use your strongest magic. Blow everything inside to pieces."
Megumin's eyes lit up.
Her nervousness vanished in an instant.
"Since you say so, allow me to demonstrate. My name is Megumin, the greatest Arch-Wizard of the Crimson Demon Clan. I have mastered the ultimate attack magic-"
Ouch.
Emiya chopped her on the head.
"Stop messing around and start."
Under the pressure, Megumin immediately stopped acting chuunibyou and began chanting.
The air around her started to vibrate.
Anyone could tell the spell she was preparing was no joke.
Her chanting grew louder.
Sweat slid down her temple.
"Watch closely. This is the strongest attack a human can unleash."
"This is the ultimate attack magic."
Light gathered at the tip of her staff.
It was small, yet impossibly dazzling, as if massive energy were being compressed into a single point.
Her crimson eyes shone brightly, wide with focus.
"Explosion!"
A beam of light shot forward.
It flew straight into the cave, striking its depths without deviation.
The next instant-
A blinding flash.
A world-shaking explosion erupted from inside the cave.
The entire hill trembled.
Dust and rubble blasted outward as a scorching wave of heat and violent wind surged forth.
Emiya activated his telekinetic barrier, blocking the flames and shockwave.
Kazuma stood there, completely stunned.
"Amazing... This magic is insane."
Then he noticed something.
Megumin had collapsed on the ground.
As if sensing his gaze, she spoke weakly, embarrassment clear in her voice.
"Explosion is my ultimate spell. Its power is enormous, which means it consumes an enormous amount of mana... In simple terms, I've used it all up, so I can't move."
Emiya patted Kazuma on the shoulder.
"Now you understand why I told you to take care of Megumin."
Kazuma: ...
He finally understood.
Megumin wasn't just a hopeless chuunibyou.
She was also a massive liability.
As for the kobolds-
They were basically wiped out by that single Explosion.
The quest was complete.
But even after finishing the mission, Emiya's group didn't leave.
