Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: THIS IS NIGERIA II

As Sophia, Patrick, and Cheryl stepped out of the restaurant, they were met with a warm Calabar evening. The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers and the distant sound of music.

The mysterious stranger was nowhere to be seen, but Sophia's phone buzzed again. "Follow the alleyway to your left. I'll be waiting."

"Let's be cautious," Patrick advised, his eyes scanning the surroundings.

They hesitated for a moment before deciding to follow the stranger's instructions. The alleyway was dimly lit, with shadows casting an eerie gloom.

As they walked deeper into the alley, a figure emerged from the darkness. It was the stranger, his eyes gleaming with an otherworldly intensity.

"Who are you?" Sophia demanded, her voice firm.

The stranger smiled, his eyes glinting with secrets. "Someone who knows your past, present, and future. You three are more connected than you think."

Suddenly, his words were interrupted by the sound of footsteps echoing through the alleyway. The stranger's eyes darted nervously towards the sound.

"We need to leave," he whispered urgently. "Now."

As the mysterious stranger's words hung in the air, the sound of footsteps grew louder. Suddenly, a group of men emerged from the shadows, their faces obscured by the darkness.

"Time to leave," one of them growled, their eyes fixed on the stranger.

The stranger nodded curtly and turned to Sophia, Patrick, and Cheryl. "It seems our meeting has been discovered. You'll need to come with me if you want to stay safe."

Without another word, he turned and disappeared into the night, followed closely by Sophia, Patrick, and Cheryl. The men gave chase, their footsteps echoing through the alleyway.

As they ran, Sophia's mind reeled with questions. Who was this stranger? What did he want from them? And who were these men pursuing them?

The stranger led them through a maze of alleys and side streets, finally stopping at a nondescript door hidden behind a dumpster. He produced a key and unlocked it, ushering them inside.

"Welcome to your safe house," he said, his eyes gleaming with a hint of mystery.

But as they entered, Sophia couldn't shake the feeling they were walking into a trap

As they stepped inside, the door creaked shut behind them, and the stranger flicked on a dim light. The room was small, with walls adorned with old maps and dusty bookshelves.

"Who are you?" Patrick demanded, his eyes narrowing.

The stranger smiled, his eyes glinting. "My name is Marcus. I've been watching you three for a while. You have skills that could be...useful."

Sophia's instincts screamed warning. "What do you want from us?"

Marcus leaned against a worn armchair. "I want to offer you a proposition. You see, I have a...project that requires your unique talents. Are you interested?"

Cheryl's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "What kind of project?"

Marcus's smile grew wider. "Ah, that's need-to-know. Let's just say it involves uncovering secrets, pushing boundaries, and taking risks. You'll be well-compensated, of course."

Patrick's expression turned skeptical. "And what's in it for you?"

Marcus chuckled. "Let's just say I have my own motivations. So, what do you say? Are you in?"

The trio exchanged uncertain glances. What would they decide

Patrick's eyes narrowed. "We need more information before we make any decisions. What kind of secrets are we talking about, and who are we up against?"

Marcus smiled, seeming to enjoy the cat-and-mouse game. "Ah, the secrets are...sensitive. Let's just say they involve powerful individuals who'll stop at nothing to keep them buried. As for who we're up against...well, that's classified for now."

Sophia's instincts screamed warning. "This sounds like a recipe for disaster. We're not getting involved in anything that puts us in harm's way."

Marcus's expression turned cold. "I'm afraid you don't have a choice. You see, I have something you want. Something you desperately need to survive."

Cheryl's eyes flashed with anger. "What are you talking about?"

Marcus's smile returned, this time tinged with malice. "I know about your past. I know what you're running from. And I can make it go away...for a price."

Patrick's face darkened. "You'd blackmail us?"

Marcus shrugged. "Call it...motivation. You have 24 hours to decide. Meet me at the old warehouse on the outskirts of town if you're interested."

With that, Marcus turned and disappeared into the shadows, leaving the trio stunned and conflicted.

"What do we do?" Cheryl whispered.

Patrick's jaw clenched. "We need to get out of here. Now."

But Sophia hesitated, her mind racing with the implications. What secrets did Marcus know? And what would happen if they refused his proposal?

As they left the safe house, Sophia's mind reeled with questions. Who was Marcus, and what did he want from them? The streets seemed to grow darker, the shadows twisting into menacing shapes.

"We need to stick together," Patrick said, his voice low and urgent. "We don't know what we're up against."

Cheryl nodded, her eyes scanning the surroundings. "Let's get back to the house and lay low for a while. We can figure out our next move then."

But Sophia hesitated, her feet seeming rooted to the spot. "I don't think that's an option," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Patrick and Cheryl turned to her, concern etched on their faces. "What do you mean?" Patrick asked.

Sophia's eyes darted around, as if searching for an escape. "Marcus knows something about us. Something big. I can feel it."

The air seemed to thicken, the tension between them growing palpable. Suddenly, footsteps echoed through the night, heavy and deliberate.

"Run," Patrick whispered, grabbing Sophia and Cheryl's arms.

They sprinted through the streets, the footsteps closing in. They ducked into a narrow alleyway, their hearts pounding in unison.

As they caught their breath, Sophia's phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number: "You can't hide forever."

The words sent a chill down her spine. Who was behind this, and what did they want?

As they stood frozen in the alleyway, the darkness seemed to close in around them. The text message lingered on Sophia's screen, the words burning into her mind: "You can't hide forever."

Suddenly, the footsteps stopped outside the alleyway entrance. Heavy breathing echoed through the night air, followed by an eerie silence.

Sophia's eyes locked onto Patrick and Cheryl, fear reflected in their gazes. Without a word, they knew they had to move.

They crept deeper into the alleyway, searching for an escape route. But every door they reached led to a dead end, every window was barred, and every path seemed to circle back to the same spot.

The silence was suffocating, punctuated only by the sound of their own ragged breathing. Sophia's phone buzzed again, the screen lighting up with a single, chilling word: "Found."
