My heart was beating so hard I could feel it in my throat, making it difficult to breathe properly.
Mari had found me in the garden just minutes ago, tears streaming down her weathered face in a way I'd never seen before, she'd grabbed my hands and pulled me aside, away from where the other servants might overhear.
"Miss Camilla," she'd gasped, her voice breaking. "It's Master Cadiz, the King, he's declared that Master Cadiz is cursed, an abomination, he's given the Ashfordes fifteen days to surrender him to the empire."
The words hadn't made sense at first. I'd just received a letter from Cadiz saying he was doing well, that things had changed for the better at Ravenshollow, he'd sounded happier than he had in any of his previous letters, more settled, more content with his life there.
And now Mari was telling me he was in danger, that the King himself had declared him cursed and wanted him handed over for judgment.
