Chapter 26 - CHAPTER 26

As the first quarter came to a close, both teams found themselves deadlocked at 23-23 each side demonstrating an impressive display of strength and skill on the court. The crowd's excitement remained at a fever pitch, eager to see how the second quarter would unfold. The players made their way to their respective team benches, ready to strategize and devise new plans for the upcoming quarter

At the Rose Mary High School Team's bench, the atmosphere was electric as the players took their seats, their spirits high

"Well done, girls. Our offense is performing well, and we're dominating the rebounds too," Coach Tunde commended his team. "However, we need to tighten out defense to force them into making mistakes"

"Their players are just too good. Their point guard alone scored 8 points in the first quarter," Vicky remarked, acknowledging Chioma's impressive performance

"Remember, the Queens are no strangers to the basketball world. They bested us last time. In the second quarter, we'll unleash our golden duo," Coach Tunde instructed, his gaze intense and determined

"Yes, sir!" the Rose Mary High School Basketball Team chorused in unison

"Let's start by building up the lead in the second quarter," Coach Tunde added, his words inspiring a resounding, "YEAH!" from his team

Meanwhile at the Queens' bench, the players listened intently to their coach, their spirits equally high

"You've seen why I said that if Eno can't stop Hannah, we can't win this game, right?" Mrs. Lawal questioned her team, emphasizing the crucial role Eno is playing in the game

"Coach, Hannah's jumps are insane. It doesn't matter if she jumps first or last; she always manages to get to the ball first," Eno reported, reflecting on her struggles in the first quarter

"Eno, you trained with Tosin yesterday, didn't you?" Mrs. Lawal asked, her gaze scrutinizing Eno's resolve

"Yes, I did," Eno replied

"I want your honest assessment now. Between Tosin and Hannah, who's tougher to guard against?" Mrs. Lawal inquired, searching for insight into Eno's mindset

"To be honest, they're both incredibly tough opponents. But if I had to choose, Tosin was even harder to guard. We fought for so many aerial balls, and I didn't win a single rebound. It was tough," Eno explained, her voice tinged with both frustration and admiration

"As long as you understand that, you'll be fine. You're one of the two who hold the key to our victory today. If you can't beat Hannah, we can't win," Mrs. Lawal explained, ensuring Eno recognized her critical role to the team's success

"Right," Eno said, her resolve strengthening as she accepted the challenge

"Now then, our plan remains the same for the second quarter. Let's take control of this game," Mrs. Lawal instructed, her words galvanizing the Queens, who responded with a spirited, "YEAH!"

The Queens huddled around Tosin; their unified spirits palpable as they prepared for the impending quarter

"3!...2!...1!... Charlie Queens! Fight!" Tosin's commanding voice echoed through the huddle

"YEAH!" The Queens chorused in response; their energy electric as they broke from the huddle

As both teams took their positions on the court, the atmosphere was tense with anticipation for the start of the second quarter. The Queens, once again in possession of the ball, saw Chioma expertly dribbling her way up the court. However, her advance was abruptly halted by Vicky, who seemed to exude a newfound determination

Sensing the shift in Vicky's demeanor, Chioma couldn't help but smile and remark, "Oh, something's changed, huh?"

"We're seriously going to crush you guys," Vicky declared, her expression grave and resolute

In that moment, Aanu sprinted past Chioma, successfully breaking her focus. Seizing the opportunity, Vicky swiftly tapped the ball out of Chioma's hands, stealing the possession and creating a fast break opportunity

Dashing towards the hoop, Vicky hurled the ball with precision. The ball ricocheted off the rim, soaring into the air. Aanu, poised in an animal-like stance, launched Vicky off her back and propelled her into the air. Meeting the ball in the air with her right hand, Vicky unleashed a powerful slam dunk, sending the crowd into a deafening roar of approval

As play resumed, the Queens found themselves in control of the ball, with Chioma spearheading their offensive efforts. She adeptly dribbled past Vicky, evading her with remarkable ease. Aanu hastily joined the defensive effort, but Chioma once again displayed her superior skill, slipping past her without missing a beat. Finally, Hannah made a valiant attempt to stop Chioma's advance, but the talented point guard swiftly released the ball to the unguarded Eno, who capitalized on the opportunity with a well-executed layup. The Charlie Queens Academy supporters' club responded with a cacophony of roaring cheers and spirited musical celebration

"What should we do about Chioma?" Aisa asked, her concern evident as she searched for a solution to counter Chioma's prowess

"She's too good. In a few years, I bet she'll be one of the best players in Nigeria" Tracy remarked, acknowledging Chioma's undeniable talent

"Well, there's no other way around it. If we can't stop her, we just have to score more than the Queens," Vicky asserted

"YEAH!" The Rose Mary High School Team chorused in agreement; their spirits rallied by Vicky's resolve

With Vicky leading the attack, she wasted no time in passing the ball to Aisa as soon as Chioma entered her peripheral vision

"Tosin, this game is just starting. Let's relax and have," Aisa remarked, rhythmically bouncing the ball as she spoke. Tosin, however, remained steadfastly focused on the game, refusing to engage in the exchange.

As the shot clock ticked down to ten, Aisa released the ball towards the hoop. The ball soared through the air, only to be met by two airborne Rose Mary High School Team players – Vicky and Aanu – who had been launched simultaneously by Hannah. In an astonishing display of teamwork, the duo executed a breathtaking tag-team slam dunk, eliciting gasps of awe and admiration from the captivated crowd

As the game continued, the Queens found themselves in possession of the ball once again, with Chioma confidently leading their offensive charge. Vicky, determined and focused to stifle Chioma's advance

"Honestly, I can't believe Oluchi is a better point guard than you. You're so good," Vicky commented, her tone laced with genuine admiration

"That's the truth. For instance, if my senior were playing instead of me, your combination with Aanu would have been stopped easily by her," Chioma replied, referring to Oluchi's skills as she bounced the ball rhythmically

"Oh?" Vicky said

Without missing a beat, Chioma launched a three-pointer. The ball soared through the air, only to be blocked by Aanu, who used Vicky's head for support as she rested her weight on her teammate. The pair wasted no time in launching a fast break, passing the ball fluidly between themselves as they charged towards the hoop

Upon reaching the front of the hoop, Vicky skillfully launched a pass into the air, setting up the soaring Aanu for a flawless layup. The crowd erupted in a deafening roar of approval, leaving Mrs. Lawal with no choice but to call a time-out, temporarily pausing the game to regroup and strategize

The Queens settled into their seats; their attention focused on their coach as they listened intently to her guidance

"43-39? We're not doing badly," Shalom observed, commenting on the current state of the game

"Coach, why did you call for a time-out?" Tosin asked, seeking clarification for the strategic pause in the game. "We were fine"

"The duo of Aanu and Vicky – their teamwork is causing us trouble. We need to put a stop to it," Mrs. Lawal explained. Turning to Shalom, she continued, "Shalome, you're in charge of guarding Aanu, right?"

"Yes, ma," Shalom confirmed, acknowledging her assigned role on the court

"I want you to work with Chioma in the remaining four minutes of the first half and put a stop to those two," Mrs. Lawal instructed, emphasizing the need for a collaborative effort between the two players

"Yes, ma," Shalom and Chioma agreed, accepting the task at hand

"Alright, guys. Break their ultimate duo," Mrs. Lawal commanded, rallying her players for the upcoming challenge

"YEAH!" The Queens chorused in unison; their spirit high as they prepare to return to the court

Meanwhile, at the Rose Mary High School Team bench, the atmosphere was equally enthusiastic as the players gather their coach

"Good work out there, girls. However, it's still anyone's game, so don't let your guard down," Coach Tunde commended his team, ensuring they remained focused and vigilant

"RIGHT!" The Rose Mary High School Team chorused in agreement, their determination unwavering as they readied themselves for the remainder of the first half

The teams assumed their positions on the court, the Queens in possession of the ball as the game resumed. Led by the confident Chioma, the Queens advanced with determination, eager to launch an offensive attack. However, Vicky swiftly halted Chioma's progress, her defensive stance resolute

"Sorry, buddy, I can't let you do as you please," Vicky declared, her tone unwavering

"Hah! Sounds like you guys are wary of me. I'm honoured. However, I'm not the only Queen around here," Chioma retorted, a self-assured smile playing at her lips

"Huh?" Vicky responded

In that moment, Chioma released a deftly executed pass. The ball soared through the air as Vicky watched intently, attempting to anticipate the intended recipient

"This pass course….. it's….." Vicky thought to herself, a hint of panic creeping into her mind

The ball landed gracefully in Tosin's hands, prompting a wave of enthusiastic cheers from the crowd, who clearly adored her presence on the court

"Seems like the fans love you, Tosin," Aisa observed with a smile

"You're one to talk," Tosin quipped, rhythmically bouncing the ball in her grasp

As the shot clock ticked down to 10, Tosin sprang into action. She attempted to dribble past Aisa, but Aisa's relentless defense proved to be a formidable challenge. Undeterred, Tosin managed to surpass Aisa's effort, only to face interference from Tracy and Aanu. With remarkable agility, Tosin evaded both players, leaving them in her wake

Hannah hastily joined the defensive effort, hoping to put an end to Tosin's impressive advance. However, Tosin skillfully avoided Hannah's attempts to stop her and executed a powerful double-clutch slam dunk. Desperate to prevent Tosin from scoring, Hannah took off in an attempt to block her shot but ended up fouling Tosin in the process. The basket was counted and Tosin was awarded an additional free throw, much to the crowd's delight, as they erupted into a raucous chorus of cheers and music

"Damn it. I meant to stop her without fouling her, but she drew the foul and got the points. It's like getting both things I was trying to prevent," Hannah thought, frustration mounting within her

"She beat four girls? Seriously, this girl is something else," Aisa mused, her admiration for Tosin's skill evident in her thoughts

With unshakable focus, Tosin took her position at the free-throw line and effortlessly scored the additional point

As the game resumed, the Rose Mary High School Team found themselves in control of the ball. Vicky, leading the attack, rhythmically bounced the ball in the face of Chioma's formidable defense

"That ultimate tag-team of yours. I'll break it," Chioma challenged, her determination evident

"Oh? Is that so? I'd like to see you try," Vicky retorted, unfazed by Chioma's declaration

"Come on!" Chioma urged, her confident unwavering

In that moment, Vicky swiftly sent a pass to Tracy, who then expertly tossed the ball high up into the air towards the hoop. The ball soared, only to be met by the aerial acrobatics of Aanu and Vicky as they launched themselves into mid-air

"I told you I would break your ultimate tag-team technique," Chioma's voice echoed as she too ascended into the air, "Oops, I meant 'we'"

Just as Aanu and Vicky prepared to execute another devastating tag-team slam dunk, Shalom suddenly propelled herself into the fray, joining Chioma in the aerial duel

"Stop us if you can!" Aanu yelled; her voice filled with determination

Despite the odds, Chioma and Shalom held their ground, successfully blocking the dunk and creating a fast break opportunity for the Queens

Tosin seized control of the ball and charged forward, flanked by Eno and Mercy in a strategic 3-on-2 situation against Aisa and Hannah. With Hannah occupied guarding Eno, Tosin capitalized on the opening, releasing a pinpoint pass to Mercy, who was poised behind the arc. Mercy wasted no time, unleashing a precise three-pointer that granted the Queens the lead and sent the crowd into a frenzy of roaring cheers and spirited music

The game resumed with the Rose Mary High School Team in possession of the ball. Aisa, leading the attack was confronted by Tosin's resolute defense

"We can't beat the Queens without laying out all our cards," Aisa thought to herself, her determination unwavering

Aisa attempted to dribble past Tosin, who reacted swiftly. However, Aisa executed a flawless fake, her movements swift and fluid, causing Tosin to stumble and creating an opening for Aisa to unleash a three-pointer with just eight seconds left in the first half

"This girl….. I have to maintain maximum focus in this game, or I'll be sorry," Tosin thought, recognizing the formidable challenge Aisa poised

As the game progressed, the Queens regained possession, with Chioma spearheading their offensive efforts. Vicky, however, halted Chioma's advance, prompting her to act quickly as time ticked down. With mere seconds left on the clock, Chioma rhythmically bounced the ball, waiting for the perfect moment to strike

As soon as the clock ticked down to two seconds, Chioma took off, catching Vicky off guard and launching a three-pointer. The ball sailed through the air, landing perfectly into the hoop with a satisfying swish as the buzzer sounded, signaling the end of the first half. The crowd erupted into a wild uproar and the Queens rejoiced in their slim lead

"Wow, Chioma, seriously?" Aisa muttered, chuckling in disbelief at Chioma's incredible last-second shots

With the score at 49-51, the Queens held a slight advantage as the teams retreated to their respective locker rooms for the half time break. The air was fill with anticipation as the players and spectators alike eagerly awaited the second half of this exhilarating game
