Flashback
The atmosphere at Rose Mary High School was buzzing with excitement on a Monday morning as students, both new and returning, filled the campus. New students were shown around by their seniors, getting acquainted with their new environment. Among the sea of students were new comers, Vicky and Aanu, walking through the school premises, searching for their class
"I can't believe we ended up in the same school again," Aanu commented, a hint of surprise in her voice
"It must be fate," Vicky replied, smiling at the coincidence
As they continued their stroll, they came across a group of female students who caught their attention. Unlike everyone else, these girls were not wearing their school uniforms, and their presence was both intriguing and perplexing. The two newcomers watched as the group jogged past them, leaving a refreshing breeze in their wake
"I wonder who they are," Vicky pondered aloud, "isn't it too early for sport activities? Will they make it to the morning assembly in time?" she questioned; her curiosity piqued
"Are they even students in the first place?" Aanu added
Suddenly, a strange voice chimed in from behind them, gently touching their shoulders as she spoke, "Yes they are,"
Startled, Aanu snapped, "who are you?!"
"Oh, pardon my manners," the newcomer said, smiling apologetically. "I'm Aisa. Nice to meet you"
"I'm Vicky and this is Aanu," Vicky revealed, returning Aisa's warm smile. "We're new here, both in JSS1"
"Oh, so am I," Aisa replied joyfully, thrilled to meet fellow first year students
Remembering their earlier discussion, Aanu asked, "What do you mean they're students?" She gestured towards the group of girls jogging around the school premises
"Yeah, they are students," Aisa clarified, her excitement evident. "They're members of this school's female basketball club. I'm going to submit my form and join the basketball club immediately after the morning assembly." She proudly showed her form to Vicky and Aanu
"Goodluck with that" Aanu said
Aisa's passion for basketball was contagious, and she couldn't resist asking, "What about you two?"
"We're not joining" Aanu replied, "We have zero knowledge about basketball and have never played it before."
"You should try it," Aisa encouraged. "As you train and play, you will get better."
"No," Aanu said, her decision firm
True to her words, Aisa joined the basketball club and quickly made a name for herself. Aanu and Vicky, opting for a different path joined the fashion club, but Aisa's passion for basketball never wavered. She continued to share amazing stories about the sport, the school team's victories, and everything happening within the team
Aisa's immense talent on the court caught the attention of the entire school. As word spread about her exceptional skills, so did her popularity. Students from all corners of Rose Mary High School began talking about the rising star
"The basketball club has been doing well lately," a student commented, noting the team's recent success
"I heard the addition of a single student has given the team a huge boost," another student added. "They could make it to the nationals this year!"
"What's her name?" a third student inquired, intrigued by the prospect of a standout player
"I heard her name is Aisa. She's a first-year student," a fourth student explained, admiration evident in their voices
Aisa's rapid rise and exceptional performance propelled the school's basketball team to new heights. With her strength, the team maintained a perfect record, as victory seemed all but guaranteed whenever she took the court
"Hey, did you hear? Aisa has been made the female team's captain and ace," one student mentioned, sharing the latest development
"Isn't she too young for such a huge role? I hope she'll be okay," another student replied, expressing concern about the pressure on Aisa's shoulders
Despite choosing a different club, Vicky and Aanu couldn't help but be captivated by Aisa's journey. They discussed the basketball team's progress and marveled at Aisa's accomplishments
"I heard the school has a game today," Vicky said, her interest piqued by the basketball buzz around the school
"Yeah, if they win, they'd advance to the quarter-finals of the playoffs," Aanu replied, equally intrigued by the school team's success
"I hope they win, and Aisa continues to shine," Vicky said, genuinely impressed by their friend's achievements
"Yeah, just the other day, they won their practice match, and Aisa scored 40 points," Aanu recalled, highlighting Aisa's undeniable talent
Inspired by Aisa's dedication and the basketball team's triumphs, Vicky found herself pondering the possibility of playing alongside their friend
"Hey, Aanu, do you think we could play basketball too, if we tried?" Vicky asked, her curiosity growing
"Don't be ridiculous!" Aanu said, dismissing the idea, "Aisa is doing well because she has the knowledge, passion, experience, and talent. There's no way we can match that."
Despite Aanu's reservations, Vicky couldn't help but daydream about sharing the court with Aisa and basking in the glory of hard-fought victories
"I wish I could stand on the same court with Aisa and win games," Vicky confessed, her admiration for their friend's accomplishments shining through
The much-anticipated game concluded with Aisa delivering yet another awe-inspiring performance, her exceptional skills on the court preceding her as the news reached Rose Mary High School before the team's return
"Aisa has done it again," One student announced, brimming with excitement. "She scored 58 points today. She's on a roll!"
"What? 58 points? That girl is something else," another student replied, marveling at Aisa's incredible feat
"They are going up against the Charlie Queens Academy in the quarter-finals in a few days," a third student added, acknowledging their school's potential for success. "They really could make it to the nationals this year after all"
Vicky and Aanu couldn't deny the persistent urge to join the basketball club. However, the fear that they might not be able to keep up, held them back. Aisa continued sharing knowledge about basketball and updates on the school team, hoping that her enthusiasm would inspire her friends to join
On the day of the pivotal match against the Charlie Queens Academy, Aisa found herself in an unexpected predicament. Benched for disciplinary reasons, she could only watch as her team took to the court without her. Reports revealed that Aisa had arrived late for a crucial team meeting, prompting the coach to punish her by keeping her on the sidelines
Vicky and Aanu chose this game to attend and support their friend, eager to witness Aisa fighting alongside her team. However, in Aisa's absence, the Rose Mary High School Team struggled to keep up with the powerful Charlie Queens Academy. The Queens swiftly seized control of the game, leaving Vicky and Aanu, along with countless other spectators, frustrated and baffled
"What's the coach doing?" Aanu questioned; her frustration evident as she watched her school team falter. "Why hasn't he brought Aisa into the game?"
"Damn it," Vicky exclaimed, her frustration mirroring Aanu's. "If Aisa had played this game from the beginning, we'd have won"
As the game progressed, Vicky and Aanu watched helplessly as the Charlie Queens Academy maintained their dominance over the court in Aisa's absence. Despite the unfavourable circumstances, the two friends held on to a sliver of hope that a miracle might turn the tide in their favour
Nearing the end of the game, the basketball team coach made the pivotal decision to substitute Aisa into the game
"Finally! Time to take control of this game," Aanu exclaimed, a wave of relief washing over her face
"Aisa, let's do this! Let's win this game!" Vicky yelled, her voice filled with encouragement and support for their friend
With Aisa's introduction, the Rose Mary High School began to gain control of the game. Students from their school started to feel hopeful once again, as the possibility of victory seemed to be within reach
"Yes! We can do this! We can win it!" Vicky cheered; her excitement palpable
"Come on, we're almost there. Let's make it to the nationals!" Aanu exclaimed, swept up in the momentum of the game
As Aisa's presence on the court revitalized the team, their newfound energy propelled them forward in pursuit of victory. However, the game took an unexpected turn when Aisa unintentionally landed on one of the Queens' players' knees, causing her immense pain
"Damn it," Vicky snapped, her frustration evident as she questioned the injured player's sincerity. "Are you sure she's not pretending?"
Aanu, on the other hand, tried to empathize with the injured player. "Nah, I don't think she's pretending," she countered, observing the girl's agony. "From the way she's screaming, it's obvious that she's in a lot of pain"
"The, they should take her out of the court already and let the game continue," Vicky retorted, her focus fixed on their team's potential comeback victory
Aanu shook her head, trying to make Vicky understand. "You won't understand another person's pain until you face it yourself," she said, attempting to provide perspective
Unwavering in her determination for their team's victory, Vicky shrugged off Aanu's comment. "Whatever," she said dismissively. "As long as we win, I don't care"
The gravity of the situation became clear as the injured player was stretchered off the court, her agonized cries piercing the air as she was rushed to the hospital. Watching the scene unfold, a sense of guilt began to gnaw at Vicky's conscience
"Is the injury that bad?" Vicky asked, her toon tinged with concern as she realized the gravity of the incident
"The injury seems serious," Aanu replied, her own worries evident in her voice. "I hope she's okay"
Despite the distraction, the game continued, and the Rose Mary High School Team channeled their renewed determination into mounting a fierce comeback against the Queens. Despite their valiant efforts, the Queens managed to hold on to their lead until the end, ultimately winning the game and leaving the Rose Mary High School Team disheartened
Feeling the weight of their defeat, Vicky turned to Aanu, her voice filled with sadness and frustration. "What are we doing?" she asked
Aanu looked at her friend, confusion etched on her face. "What do you mean?"
"Our friend is out there fighting alone, and all we do is discuss about boring fashion?" Vicky continued, her voice laced with guilt and a newfound sense of purpose
Sensing the direction of Vicky's thoughts, Aanu quickly attempted to dissuade her friend. "Hey, you're not thinking about joining the basketball club, are you? I told you we can't do it"
Unwavering in her resolve, Vicky countered, "We don't know and we won't know until we try"
A few seconds of tense silence hung between them before Vicky made her declaration. "You know what? I'm quitting the fashion club"
Aanu's eyes widened in disbelief. "What'd you say?" she snapped
"I'm joining the female basketball club starting today," Vicky asserted, a newfound determination in her voice. Without waiting for Aanu's response, she turned and walked out, leaving her friend in stunning silence
"Vicky… Vicky!!!" Aanu called out to her friend but Vicky ignored the pleas and stormed out, driven by her resolve to join the basketball club and support the school and herself in a meaningful way.
The news of the female basketball team's devastating defeat spread like wildfire throughout the school, casting a somber cloud over the once-optimistic students. Discussions filled the hallways and classes as students dissected the events that led to the team's failure to advance to the next round
"The female basketball team lost?" One student exclaimed in disbelief; her tone heavy with disappointment
"They were so close to making it to the nationals too," another added, shaking his head in dismay
As the conversations continued, the blame game began, with most students pointing fingers at the coach for his questionable decisions
"That's what you get when you have an incompetent coach. Why did he leave Aisa on the bench?" a student griped, their frustration evident
"The coach knows nothing about basketball," A fourth chimed in, his voice dripping with disdain
"We can't make it to the nationals without a good coach," another stated, his tone resigned
"Do we even have a coach?" a sixth student questioned, sarcastically, drawing nods of agreement from his peers
Amid the chorus of complaints, a more analytical voice emerged, redirecting the conversation towards the players themselves. "I get that you guys are frustrated with the coach, and I'm frustrated too. But what happened to the rest of the team? Can't they win without Aisa?" the seventh student pondered aloud, prompting a momentary silence as the students considered the new perspective
Meanwhile Aanu and Vicky's friendship suffered as the fallout from their disagreement continued. The tension between them was palpable and the once-inseparable pair now avoided each other, leaving a palpable void in their wake
Weeks passed, and during a routine practice session, the female basketball club received a surprising visitor. Vicky stood before the team, an air of determination surrounding her
"Good evening, my name is Vicky Onuawuchi," she began, her voice steady and confident. "I'm sorry to interrupt. I know you guys are busy, so I'll just go straight to the point. I want to join the female basketball club"
Aisa's face brightened at this declaration; her smile genuine as she recognized the potential benefits of having Vicky on the team. However, just as the coach was about to respond, another voice spoke out from the corridor
"I want to join too," Aanu declared, stepping into view and stunning the rest of the team into silence
Aisa's happiness only grew, while the other team members exchanged curious glances, unsure of what to make of these unexpected developments
"Please let me join, too," Aanu pleaded, her eyes looked on Vicky as the two friends shared a meaningful smile, their previous animosity dissipating in the face of this new opportunity
With that, Aanu and Vicky officially joined the female basketball club, bring a fresh wave of potential and camaraderie to the team.
The duo was given a chance to prove themselves in a practice match. Their teammates were the players from the second string against players from the third string. The first string is made up of players who participate in official games while players in other string train to get better and get promoted to the first string. There are three strings in the system
As the practice game began, anticipation filled the air as Vicky and Aanu took their places on the court as part of the second string. The prospect of moving up to the first string – to play alongside Aisa – fueled their determination. With the support of their teammates, the duo braced themselves for the challenge ahead
For ten intense minutes, the second and third strings went head-to-head in a heated battle of skill and perseverance. However, as the final whistle sounded, a sense of disbelief descended upon the court. Despite their initial optimism, the second string, including Vicky and Aanu, had succumbed to a surprising defeat
Coach Tunde's stern voice pierced through the silence as he summoned Vicky and Aanu for an evaluation of their performances. The girls approached their coach, anxiety gnawing at their insides, as they awaited the verdict that would determine their fate on the team
Coach Tunde's disappointment was palpable as he dissected the duo's lackluster display on the court. "Vicky and Aanu, you two were poor today," he began, his tone firm. "Despite being members of the second string – which should be better than the third string by default – you both, along with your teammates, lost the game. Not to mention your individual performances. Vicky, as a point guard, scoring zero points with only one assist and no rebound is simply unacceptable. Aanu, the sole point you scored came from a free throw, but you had zero assists, zero rebounds, and just one steal. That's also very poor"
Pausing to let his words sink in, Coach Tunde delivered the disheartening news: "I'm sorry but you'll both have to join the third string"
The girls' hearts sank as they absorbed the impact of the Coach's decision. Though disheartened, they managed to muster a polite, albeit muted, response. "Thank you very much, sir," they said in unison
With Coach Tunde's words still echoing in their minds, Vicky and Aanu found themselves alone in the gym, the silence amplifying their disappointment. Overwhelmed by the frustration of their situation, they couldn't hold back their tears any longer and broke down, the weight of their setbacks proving too heavy to bear in silence
As their sobs subsided, Vicky, her voice tinged with dissatisfaction, spoke up, "Third string, huh?"
Aanu, wiping her tear-streaked face, managed a wistful smile. "It's a long and hard road to the top, huh?" she said, a hint of laughter in her voice
Vicky's gaze grew distant as she imagined a brighter future. "Hey, Aanu, how wonderful it would be to play official games with Aisa," She mused, her tone tinged with longing. "Celebrating every hard-fought victory, mourning the defeats…. Together"
Aanu, struck by the similarity of their dreams, couldn't help but agree. "I just had the same thought," she admitted, a spark of hope rekindling in her heart
Steeling her resolve, Vicky declared, "I've decided. I'm going to get to that first string even if I have to drag someone down." The determination in her voice was unmistakable, her passion for the reignited by the shared vision of playing alongside their esteemed teammate and friend, Aisa
Aanu, her smile broadening, found herself on the same wavelength. "Wow, we're in sync today, aren't we?" she chuckled, excitement bubbling up inside her. "I just made the same decision."
From that fateful day, Vicky and Aanu embarked on a grueling training regimen, pushing themselves to their limits in pursuit of their shared goal. The school gym became their sanctuary, the echoing sound bouncing basketballs a testament to their unrelenting determination. On school days, they trained from 6 pm to 8 pm, following the first string's training session. On Saturdays, they took over the court from 4 pm to 8 pm, just after the first string's training session. On Sundays, after Church Services, they dedicated themselves to practice from 12 noon to 8 pm, refusing to waste a single moment
Their hard work did not go unnoticed. Aisa soon joined their rigorous training sessions, inspired by the unwavering drive of her friends. As they sweated, struggled, and grew together on the court, Aisa decided to share a secret with them. The revelation sent shockwaves through the duo
"Jesus, I didn't think the injury was that serious!" Vicky exclaimed, her concern for the injured player evident in her voice
"Yeah, her name is Tosin," Aisa said, her tone heavy with guilt. "I feel bad because I was the one who caused it"
Aanu, ever the optimist, consoled Aisa, "Don't blame yourself," she insisted. "It was an accident. Injuries are normal in this court in this sport. I hope she returns to the court soon"
Aisa, relieved by Aanu's words, offered a hopeful update. "I guess you're right. The surgery was successful, and Tosin is currently recovering"
"I wish her a speedy recovery," Vicky said. "She'll return stronger. Though, the next time we face the Queens, we'll crush them"
"About that," Aisa interjected, her gaze shifting between the two friends, "the next time we face the Queens, I want to see you both in the first string. Please, get stronger fast so we can destroy the Queens together"
"RIGHT!" Aanu and Vicky exclaimed in unison; their resolve strengthened by Aisa's faith in them
Despite the relentless efforts, and the newfound synchronicity in their play, Vicky and Aanu's journey to the first string remained riddled with obstacles. Loss after loss chipped away at their confidence, leaving them questioning their abilities
"Another defeat?" Vicky lamented, her frustration reaching a boiling point. "When are we ever going to win?"
Aanu, seemingly distracted by her phone fell under Vicky's scrutiny. "Hey, we just lost another game, and all you do is sit back and scroll through your phone? Are you even serious about this?"
Aanu, sensing the tension, called out to Vicky. "Hey, Vicky, come and take a look." She invited, piquing Vicky's curiosity
"What's that?" Vicky asked, joining Aanu as they watched an awe-inspiring video of professional NBA players
"Come and watch these clips." Aanu urged, her excitement growing
Enthralled by the mesmerizing display of teamwork on the screen, Vicky couldn't help but be impressed. "Wow, these two are good. How are they doing it?" she asked, her eyes glued to the dynamic duo's every move
Aanu, a hint of inspiration in her voice, explained, "Those two are NBA players. They are always in sync, as if they can read each other's minds, right?"
Despite her admiration for the talented athletes, Vicky couldn't shake off the weight of their recent defeat. "This isn't the time to be watching videos," she complained, handing the phone back to Aanu. "We just lost a game. Do you know what that means? We missed another chance to get promoted to the second string"
Aanu, sensing Vicky's frustration, revealed a glimmer of hope. "Yeah, I know. I have a plan," she said, a mischievous grin spreading across her face
Intrigued by Aanu's mysterious declaration, Vicky leaned in closer. "You do?"
With a nod, Aanu shared her bold idea. "Maybe we can't do insane solo moves the way talented players like Aisa do. But what if we work together? What if we are in sync just like those two players in the video? What do you think?"
Vicky, considering Aanu's suggestion, couldn't help but feel a spark of excitement at the prospect of honing their partnership on the court. "Hmmm, that's a good idea," she agreed. "Let's give it a try."
From that day forward, Vicky and Aanu dedicated themselves to perfecting their combination attacks and defenses, scouring YouTube for inspiration and practicing new plays that would set them apart from their competitors. As they poured their hearts and souls into training, they steadily transformed their partnership into a force to be reckoned with
As the second string and the third string game commenced, tension filled the air. Vicky and Aanu, now in JSS 3, had worked tirelessly to improve their skills and were determined to prove themselves worthy of ascending to the second string. The onlookers watched with bated breath, expecting a repeat of the third string's usual defeat. To everyone's amazement, the duo's unbreakable combination turned the tides in favour of the third string. With each points scored; their undeniable teamwork shone brighter. By the final whistle, the scoreboard displayed a staggering 20-6 in favour of the third string, with Vicky and Aanu contributing 15 points to their team's victory
Promotions to the second string were limited, and much to their delight, Vicky and Aanu's hard work had paid off. Aisa, their friend, joined them in celebrating their achievement, urging them to push further and join her in the first string. The trio's aspirations were soon met with a challenge as three of the first-string players announced their retirement to pursue higher education at university. The first string now face the pressing need for reinforcement
Hesitant to believe the rumours of Vicky and Aanu's extraordinary partnership, Coach Tunde revisited the second string. He stood by the sidelines, watching intently as the duo exhibited their mesmerizing chemistry during a match against the first string's benchwarmers. Despite the strength of the opponents, the second string emerged victorious with a close scoreline of 25-24, and Vicky and Aanu's combined 18 points solidified their rightful place among the first string
Coach Tunde's voice echoed through the gym as Aanu and Vicky entered for their first training session. "Welcome to the first string of the Rose Mary High School Female Basketball Club. We look forward to working with you both." Aisa beamed with pride as she congratulated her friends on their hard-earned achievement.
The duo stood in awe, taking in the scene before them as the realization of their dreams sank in.
The new academic session commenced with great fervor for the Rose Mary High School Female Basketball Club. Their exceptional performance in the previous year, reaching the quarterfinals of the Christmas Champions Cup and being ranked among the top 8 schools in Nigeria, had set high expectations for upcoming session. The team began with a bang, effortlessly securing victories in their first three games, igniting excitement and anticipation among the student body
"The Female Basketball Team is back at it again!" exclaimed one student, recounting their impressive performance at the nationals the previous year. "They are starting the new session in style, winning 3 straight games"
Another student eagerly added, "They are not just going to participate in Christmas Champions Cup this year, they are going to win it"
Skepticism arose among some students, questioning whether the team could overcome formidable opponents such as teams who have members of the Victorious Varsity in their squad.
One student chimed in, "Are you sure about that? Do you think they can beat the Victorious Varsity?"
In response, a fourth student mentioned that Aisa, the team's ace, now had dependable teammates to lean on
This sentiment was echoed by another student who highlighted the addition of Vicky and Aanu, the 'golden duo,' to the squad. "Yeah, the Female Basketball team isn't a one-man team anymore. Perhaps I should say 'one-woman team'" he said, "We still have Aisa, but now we've got Aanu and Vicky too"
As the Rose Mary High School Female Basketball Team progressed through the playoffs with relative ease, their sights were set on a rematch against the Queens in the semifinals. "I can't wait to face the Queens again," said another student, brimming with confidence. "We're going to win this time!"

Back to the present
In the locker room, the Rose Mary High School Female Basketball Team took a moment to rest before their highly-anticipated second half showdown against the Queens. As the players awaited their coach's arrival, a sense of determination and camaraderie permeated the air
Aanu, one of the team's star players and part of their 'golden duo' addressed her teammate and close friend, Vicky. "Vicky, we couldn't go to the nationals with Aisa last year," Aanu began, reflecting on their past struggles. "But we worked hard, coming from the lowest of the low, and now we are here. We've suffered. We know what it feels like to lose. We know what it means to lose. We've come this far – we can't let it end here."
The significance of the moment was not lost on Aanu, who emphasized the importance of their game against the Queens. "Only one game left – if we win, we will advance to the final. This means that we will secure our place in the Christmas Champions Cup. Hence, if we win, we will go to the nationals with Aisa this time. Let's win this, advance to the finals, and secure our spot in this year's Christmas Champions Cup"
Vicky, equally focused and committed to their shared goals, responded with an unwavering confidence. "That goes without saying," she said, as the two friends shared a fist bump, reaffirming their determination to emerge victorious in the match
As the rest of the team listened to their exchange, a palpable sense of unity and purpose filled the locker room. The Rose Mary High School Female Basketball Team was ready to take on the Queens and prove, once again that they have what it takes to be champions
